Mateusz Gamrot surprised many with his big win over Arman Tsarukyan at UFC Vegas 57 on Saturday.

Tsarukyan entered the bout as a -280 favorite over the Polish grappler, but it was Gamrot’s conditioning that held up better allowing him to take the last three rounds on all three scorecards to secure a unanimous decision victory. Following his victory, Gamrot took the opportunity to shoot his shot, calling out former two-time UFC title challenger Justin Gaethje.

“I am ready for f*cking every single guy in the division. In the future, I will be a champion for sure. I want to fight with Justin Gaethje. Justin Gaethje’s the most brutal guy in the division. I want to fight next with him.”

Appearing at the UFC Vegas 57 post-fight press conference, Gamrot elaborated on his callout of ‘The Highlight’ calling it a battle of the old school versus the new school of lightweight contenders.

“I am a big fan of Justin Gaethje. You know, I have a lot of respect for him. I think he’s the most brutal guy in the lightweight division. This guy fighting two times in the title shot and I think this is old school and I am new school. I am new generation. Now I wanna switch the place. I start climbing to the top.”

Mateusz Gamrot Reveals He Spoke With Khabib Nurmagomedov Following Win

Mateusz Gamrot also discussed a conversation he had with former lightweight champion and soon-to-be UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov

“Khabib said, ‘congratulations on your fight, you are a nice guy, for sure in the future you meet with Islam in fight.’ So I keep my fingers crossed for Islam. I think Islam beats Charles Oliveira next fight and I want my next fight with Justin and next fighting with Islam. Simple plan.”

With his win over Tsarukyan, Gamrot will likely find himself a top ten opponent for his next bout. Gaethje last fought at UFC 274 in May. Only a month removed from that fight, the timeline would certainly make sense for Gamrot to get a shot at Gaethje’s No. 3 spot in the rankings.

While the UFC has not committed to the bout, the general consensus is that Charles Oliveira will face Islam Makhachev for the vacant lightweight championship before the end of the year.  Oliveira was the undisputed champion until his bout with Gaethje at UFC 274. ‘Do Bronx’ weighed in over the lightweight title fight limit of 155 pounds and was stripped of his championship. With his win over Gaethje, Oliveira will fight to regain his lightweight title when he returns to the Octagon.

Gamrot defeated Tsarukyan via unanimous decision in what was a highly technical, back-and-forth affair between two of the lightweight division’s best grapplers.

Tsarukyan took the advantage in the opening rounds, landing a series of devastating body kicks and a spinning backfist that floored Gamrot briefly. But Gamrot hit his stride in the later rounds, landing several takedowns and taking Tsarukyan’s back on two occasions.

The win was former Gamrot’s fourth in a row, having previously finished Carlos Diego Ferreira, Jeremy Stephens and Scott Holtzman. The 31-year-old Pole has tasted defeat just once in his 22-fight career, having lost a split decision to Guram Kutateladze on his UFC debut in 2020.

The UFC didn’t go crazy with handing out bonuses for UFC Vegas 57 like they did at UFC 275 and UFC Austin, but 3 different fighters earned Performance of the Night bonuses to go along with Fight of the Night.

The final 4 bouts of the night ended up accounting for the extra money, starting with Thiago Moisés’ submission victory over Christos Giagos.

Moisés entered the night on a two-fight losing streak but put on a convincing performance when he took Giagos’s back and forced a tap just over 3 minutes into the fight.

A heavyweight bout followed Moisés’s victory, with American Josh Parisian taking on Frenchman Alan Baudot. While it wasn’t the most technical fight, Parisian was able to weather an early storm in order get a second-round TKO and also snag a Performance of the Night bonus.

The night’s final Performance of the Night was awarded to Shavkat Rakhmonov for his submission win against veteran Neil Magny. One of the UFC’s hottest prospects, Rakhmonov was largely able to handle Magny the same way he had his previous 3 UFC opponents.

Magny survived a few difficult positions but “Nomad” eventually proved to be too much and secured a guillotine choke that the veteran tapped to just before the end of the second round. Rakhmonov maintains not only his undefeated record but also his streak of never having gone the distance as a pro.

The main event was likely the most anticipated fight on the card, and it delivered with a clear Fight of the Night performance. Arman Tsarukyan looked strong through the first two rounds before Mateusz Gamrot gained momentum as the fight went on.

The former KSW champion ultimately walked away with a unanimous decision win, though many felt that Tsarukyan was deserving of the victory. Scorecards aside, both lightweights put on a tremendous show, and each earned an extra $50K for their efforts.

The main event of UFC Vegas 57 delivered on fan expectations, as lightweights Arman Tsarukyan and Mateusz Gamrot went to war in a bout that was rightfully named Fight of the Night. As entertaining as the action was, the fight’s decision drew a considerable amount of criticism online.

Gamrot earned identical 48-47 scorecards from all three judges, and the former KSW champion walked away with a unanimous decision win. The 31-year-old was able to draw on his five-round experience and do his best work later in the fight despite Tsarukyan winning the first two rounds fairly comfortably.

Many people online felt that the Armenian had done enough to win at least one more round to earn the decision. The fourth round appeared the most contentious, as Tsarukyan knocked Gamrot down with a spinning back fist but was also taken down twice.

The 25-year-old Tsarukyan was on a 5-fight win streak and was the favorite heading into this fight. Gamrot extended his own winning streak to 4 since losing his UFC debut in 2020, and he also handed Tsarukyan his first loss since the Armenian’s own UFC debut against Islam Makhachev in 2019.

The Polish fighter was the UFC’s #12-ranked lightweight heading into this fight and should expect a Top 10 matchup for his next bout.

What do you think of the judges’ scorecards for this fight? How did you have the fight scored?
