UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes has been in a fight for his life since June 16th when his pickup truck was slammed on the passenger side by an oncoming train in Raymond, Illinois. He was placed in a coma as a result. However, some positive news has surfaced regarding his recovery.

Other than his family, only a handful of people that know Hughes better than fellow Hall of Famer Pat Miletich. If you recall, Miletich taught Hughes what he knew as Hughes went on to become the first great longtime UFC welterweight champion in MMA’s modern era.

During a recent edition of The MMA Hour, Miletich provided an update on Hughes’ battle to recover from the horrific accident. The former UFC champion is no longer in a coma.

“He is surprising the doctors,” Miletich said. “He’s making great leaps, and he’s no longer in a coma, and he’s improving. It’s going to be a long road. Any type of head trauma at that level, there’s going to be some rehab.”

Miletich would go onto explain that Hughes was apparently stuck on a hill and wasn’t able to cross the track in time to avoid the train.

“The [train] engineer said, Matt had stopped on the gravel road,” Miletich said. “It’s a hill, goes up, it’s a real quick hill that goes up to the railroad tracks. He had stopped, then tried to get across it in time. The train was going almost 50 MPH.

“When you’re out in the country, there’s no crossing guards, there’s no lights,” Miletich continued. “It’s almost like, he saw it, then tried to beat it. What I would say is that you’re on a gravel road out in country on a hill and you’re trying to punch it and get over, you’re going to swing tires, he didn’t get across in time and got clipped on the passenger side.”

Miletich noted that he hasn’t been able to visit Hughes at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Ill., since the accident but he has no doubt that they will meet again.

“Nobody is allowed to visit him besides family,” Miletich said. “That’s it right now. They don’t want to overload him, they want his energy to go to healing and not to anything else.”

“I’m 100 percent sure he’s going to make a full recovery,” he said.

Pat Miletich provided a health update on former UFC star Matt Hughes, revealing the two-time welterweight champion is out of the coma resulting from his being hit by a train.

He is surprising the doctors,” Miletich said on The MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting’s Dave Doyle). “He’s making great leaps and he’s no longer in a coma, and he’s improving. It’s going to be a long road. Any type of head trauma at that level, there’s going to be some rehab.”

The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Illinois, reported June 16 that Hughes was driving a truck that was struck by a train. He was flown to a hospital shortly after.

Hughes’ manager, Monte Cox, told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on June 17 that Hughes was “awake, but eyes closed” and that he was capable of squeezing people’s hands.

Hughes’ sister, Beth Ulrici, posted a statement to Facebook on June 18 saying the 43-year-old was in stable condition and didn’t break any bones or suffer internal injuries from the crash. However, he remained on a ventilator.

According to the State Journal-Register, Illinois State Police reported Hughes attempted to cross a set of railroad tracks as a train was approaching the crossing, which was only marked with a sign to alert drivers. The train hit the passenger side of Hughes’ truck.

UFC legend Matt Hughes is showing some signs of improvement from a serious car accident involving a train in Illinois.

He still has a long fight ahead, but his sister Beth Hughes Ulrici posted a new update on her Facebook page revealing that Hughes is indeed off of a ventilator and showing ‘small signs of improvement’ in his hopeful recovery:

Update from Matt’s family:

Please understand that Matt was the only public figure in our family. The rest of us are just regular everyday small town folks. We have never had to deal with the media and all the added stress that comes with it. We are all very private people and we are doing our best to keep you all informed; but our focus right now is Matt and his recovery. No news is good news!

Matt is off the ventilator and showing some small signs of improvement. There are some stories and comments out there that are exaggerated. Please don’t believe everything you hear or read. This is going to be a long journey for his recovery. Please continue to keep Matt in your prayers. He is strong, he has heart and he will not give up! We are faithful in the fact that he will recover with God’s Grace and Mercy! We as a family ask everyone to keep praying for Matt!

Hughes was involved in the wreck on the morning of June 16 when a truck he was driving drove directly onto train tracks on Beeler Trail near his home of Hillsboro, Illinois. Illinois Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, in which Hughes’ truck was struck on the passenger side. He was airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital and has stayed there in his recovery.

Several updates broke on his condition, but as his sister cautioned in her latest update from his immediate family, they were not all true. She previously confirmed that Hughes had suffered no internal injuries or broken bones, but remained unresponsive.

We here at LowKick MMA wish Hughes, his fans, his family, and his close friends the continued best in his recovery.
