Matt Mitrione, a staple of heavyweight MMA since 2009, is set to face off against Tyrell Fortune at Bellator 255.
‘Meathead’ is looking to start 2021 with a bang, and instantly put the heavyweight division back on watch. However, he is aware of how dangerous an opponent Fortune will be.
On the topic of Tyrell Fortune as an opponent, Mitrione has first-hand experience of how dangerous the wrestler can be. The two fighters have previously trained together, and whilst there is no bad blood between the two, Mitrione is still going into the fight with bad intention. He stated the following about Fortune:
“He’s a very accomplished wrestler. He’s very capable as far as getting people to the ground, holding on to them. I think that he’s athletic. I think that he’s always succeeded in sports, so all he knows is success. So I think he’ll be a game opponent and it should be an interesting competition.
“I’ve been training with Tyrell for many years. So I know Tyrell fairly well, he knows me fairly well. I figured that by the time he came to the point of his name recognition fighting me that I would be on my way out of Bellator.”
“I don’t think I’m gonna surprise anybody when I tell you I’m gonna punch him in his face. And he’s going to do his best to avoid that. Get me by my hips, hold me down. I think what he’s gonna do is very similar to what (Ryan) Bader did right. Bader’s game plan is the way to beat me. So I know he’s living in Arizona, he’s probably training with Bader.
One of the major headlines regarding Bellator in 2021 is that of the implementation of a ranking system in each division. This has been something long cried out for by many fight fans. However, Mitrione does quite feel the same way. He stated the following:
“I’m not even trying to be sarky or an a*****e here. I don’t know and I don’t care. I don’t put any credence in rankings whatsoever, I think that they’re arbitrarily picked.“
“At least from the existing rankings in the other promotion (UFC), they mean literally nothing. It’s literally whoever they want, they put them in. If they want to publicise them or promote them, that’s what they do, they put them higher. If they want to punish them, they take them out. It doesn’t matter at all. And for me, I genuinely, honestly, could not care less.”

Matt Mitrione admits he was relieved to hear Bellator 241 was cancelled but insists he’s ready to get back to fighting amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Former NFL star turned heavyweight knockout artist Mitrione was due to face Ronny Markes at Bellator 241 on March 13. He accepted the fight on two weeks’ notice after Josh Barnett failed his medical and was forced to withdraw from the card. Unfortunately for fight fans, the event was cancelled just a few hours before it was scheduled to begin.
Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA Mitrione admits despite being ready to fight, he was a little bit relieved upon hearing the news, mainly due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, he said.
“We were mentally and emotionally ready to go compete and go perform. Then we found out it got cancelled. It was about three hours or so before the show was going to start. I mean, honestly, there was a little bit of a relief because there were so many more questions than answers at that time about what was happening. So as a result of that, it was kind of a breath of fresh air.
Now some time has passed Mitrione wants to get back to fighting. The 41-year-old power puncher is keen to put on a show for people during the lockdown, he explained “I think now’s the time for us to get back to work. I think if you’re cool with fighting right now and signed a name on the dotted line and let’s go ahead and make some matchups and let’s get down. Let’s let the world watch us.”
“If there’s a pay cheque involved, I am down for the cause. I don’t care if it’s in a basement with a bunch of headlights. I don’t care if it’s off in the ocean on a platform surrounded by sharks. I don’t care if there’s a paycheck on it. I’ll be there brother.”
Mitrione took time out to praise his former boss Dana White for doing everything in his power to hold events and keep the UFC relevant right now.
“I think if the fighters are willing to go compete, then yes, he’s doing the right thing. I think that Dana’s a trailblazer he always has been. Dana’s not afraid to be Dana. I think that’s what has made UFC so successful. And I think that is what he has established and shown once again that what he feels he wants to do, he is going to.
“I don’t think anybody’s going to be fighting that doesn’t feel comfortable fighting at all. I mean look at Rose. She lost a couple of people do the coronavirus and bailed and nobody gave her any slack about it whatsoever.
“Some people were uncomfortable here, but I think we understand a lot more people are comfortable and are ready to get back to work. And that’s what he wants to capitalize on. I mean, think about it. He’s the only show in town and everybody in the world is even more aware of UFC than they were beforehand because Dana keeps him in the media presence constantly.

Barnett and Markes were originally slated to make their promotional debuts in a heavyweight bout at Bellator 241 which takes place March 13 in Uncasville, Connecticut.
However, Barnett was ruled out by the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulations (MTDAR) after he failed a medical requirement. The former UFC champion — who signed with the promotion last April — will have to wait even longer to make his debut.
“Mr. Barnett has failed a medical requirement by the Mohegan Tribe Dept of Athletic Reg and will not be fighting on the March 13 Bellator event,” MTDAR director Mike Mazzulli told MMA Fighting. “He will not be allowed to fight till he resolves the failed test.”
Bellator has since confirmed that Mitrione will be taking his place.
Mitrione began his Bellator career with a four-fight winning streak including a knockout over Fedor Emelianenko. However, he is winless in his last three outings, the most recent of which was a TKO defeat to Sergei Kharitonov in August.
As for Markes, he is coming off a TKO win over Sigi Pesalelli at PFL 3 last June.
Bellator 241 will be headlined by a featherweight grand prix quarterfinal between current champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire and Pedro Carvalho.

Matt Mitrione suffered a knockout loss at the hands of Sergei Kharitonov in the main event of Bellator 225.
Yet, the storyline in the fight was about Mitrione’s mouthpiece. He was using a brand new mouthpiece but it fell out multiple times and the referee warned the former NFL player that if it fell out again he would be deducted a point. Then, Kharitonov landed a punch that knocked the mouthpiece out and Matt Mitrione looked in disgust and was then hit with a knee that sent him to the ground and the Russian finished it off with strikes.
“Me losing was not because of my mouthpiece, it was because of my response to the situation. I always use the same one & lost it Thursday before fight week. Had an impression done at a West Lafayette dentist. It was shipped to hotel. First time I ever wore it was tonight,” Matt Mitrione wrote on Twitter.
There is no question the mouthpiece was a distraction for Mitrione but he is not blaming the loss on that. But, it is almost a guarantee he will have a new mouthpiece that is fitted when he steps into the cage next time out.
Do you think the mouthpiece had an impact on Matt Mitrione’s performance?
