It was over 14 years ago when Dan Henderson entered the sport of mixed martial arts for the very first time.

And it didn’t take long for the dangerous striker to establish himself as a legitimate force, as he would be declared victorious in the first eight fights of his career before signing with the organization of Pride.

Henderson would win 13 of his 18 fights with the organization, as he would leave to join the Ultimate Fighting Championship in September of 2007.

In his first two fights inside the Octagon, “Hendo” would be defeated by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Anderson Silva.

However, Henderson would recover as he went on to win his next three bouts, including one of the most spectacular knockouts of all time over Michael Bisping at UFC 100.

Henderson would leave for a short while to fight in Strikeforce but has now returned to the highest stage of mixed martial arts.

One of the UFC’s most dangerous strikers will now take on Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139 in San Jose, California in just a few short hours.

And while Henderson may be considered the favorite by many in the main event showdown, there are some things he’ll need to accomplish in order for that to happen.

First, Henderson has proven to be the more conditioned fighter, as he’s gone to the judge’s scorecards on 18 different occasions throughout his mixed martial arts career.

Rua, on the other hand, hasn’t spent much time in the later rounds of action, as the majority of his fights are finished before the second round even begins.

Henderson will need to be cautious early, as “Shogun” will be looking for the knockout blow as soon as action begins.

Another strength of Henderson’s is his exceptional wrestling game, as he is a former Olympic wrestler.

Henderson must establish a strong attack consisting of takedowns and vicious ground-and-pound strikes.

If Henderson can stick to his game plan, he should have no problem winning his fourth consecutive fight and move closer towards a light heavyweight title fight in the near future.

UFC 139 will take place on Saturday, Nov. 19, from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.  The main event will feature a light heavyweight collision between former UFC and Pride champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and former Pride and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson.

The two legends of the sport are looking to use one another as a stepping stone toward the division’s championship, currently held by Jon Jones.  Jones gained the belt by defeating Rua at UFC 128 in March.  Henderson, meanwhile, makes his return to the Octagon following a stint with Strikeforce in which he captured their 205-pound title.

In the night’s co-main event, another dominant figure of the Pride organization, Wanderlei Silva, will take on former Strikeforce middleweight champ Cung Le.  Silva is looking to bounce back from a knockout loss at UFC 132 in July, while Le makes his promotional debut.

Also on the card is a battle of former WEC champions who are both seeking revenge against current bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz.  Former featherweight champ Urijah Faber locks horns with the man who Cruz defeated to gain the belt, Brian Bowles.  The winner is slated for the next shot at the title.

Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua…think about this fight for a moment, but take the time to think about this one.

Transport yourself back to December 23th, 2002, picture yourself conducting a pre-fight interview with Henderson as he was heading up to the ring in Fukuoka, Japan, preparing for one Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and ask that past version of Henderson about if he could imagine facing Rua one day for the UFC.

If you’d asked Hendo about a fight with Shogun on that date, you might be lucky just for Henderson to know that Shogun debuted in the sport one month prior, but what if you’d asked him on October 21, 2006 when he fought Vitor Belfort on the same night that Rua would defeat Mark Coleman?

The truth is that the headliner between Hendo and Shogun, topping off a stacked night of fights in the UFC’s debut in San Jose, is one of those bouts that we all wished for at one time, but never thought would surface in the era where both men were arguably at their best.

Rest assured, though, that that time has finally come, and both men will do battle in what should be a modern MMA classic.

In addition to this main event, it’s a battle of two Middleweights—the newly-signed former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le, and the legendary former PRIDE Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva—in what might be best described as a “do or die” fight for the PRIDE legend.

Also, Urijah Faber feels he got shafted at UFC 132 in the decision that cost him a UFC Bantamweight title, but before he can focus on Cruz, he has to get past the man Cruz beat for the belt in Brian Bowles.

Finally, Martin Kampmann and Rick Story have been on notable tears in the past, but recently, Story suffered his second Octagon defeat by unanimous decision to late-replacement Charlie Brenneman, while Kampmann lost another ridiculously terrible decision—this time to Diego Sanchez, who many felt lost the fight against Kampmann.

All this, plus Stephan Bonnar’s battle of the abs with Kyle Kingsbury, the very first televised fight of Michael McDonald’s UFC career against Alex Soto, and a whole lot more, as this is UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson live (blog coverage) and direct from your home for the pound-for-pound best Mixed Martial Arts news coverage anywhere online, Bleacher Report MMA!
