Riding high off his first-round submission of Karl Roberson, Glover Teixeira has called out fellow Brazilian Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Score one for the older guys. Teixeira looked great in his victory last weekend at UFC Brooklyn. He was all smiles after the fact as well.

Shortly after he got his hand raised, Teixeira spoke with Combate
and revealed that he would love to share the Octagon with former light heavyweight champion “Shogun” Rua.

“I want Shogun because he’s a legend of the sport,” Teixeira said. “I respect him very much. He has good style and it matches with mine. I want to fight him in Brazil. I don’t know when it doesn’t matter, we still need to work that out. For now, I just want a beer and enjoy my win in Brazil.”

Teixeira weathered the storm early on as Roberson landed some hard punches. However, the former 205-pound title challenger felt the tide turning when his opponent gassed.

“I made a mistake,” Teixeira said. “I went for his leg, I waited longer than necessary and I took some hard elbows. But I pulled guard and then I was able to block the elbows from under him. I tried a reversal, but it didn’t work, but then I ended up on top anyway and I could feel he was tiring out. I think his adrenaline was too high and I was able to recover.”

Although Glover didn’t specify when he would like to fight his fellow Brazilian, it would only make sense for matchmakers to book it for the upcoming UFC 237 card in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil.

Maurício “Shogun” Rua picked up a big win last night (Dec. 1, 2018) in the co-main of UFC Adelaide when he knocked out Tyson Pedro, but he still doesn’t think he deserves a title shot yet.

The former light heavyweight champion found himself in a war with the much younger Pedro, who hurt Rua in the earlier going of the fight. “Shogun” looked visibly beat up after their fight despite winning the contest.

Just prior to the fight-ending sequence that saw Rua land about a dozen hammer fists to Pedro’s head, it looked as if the Aussie’s knee had buckled. Rua noticed it too, during the fight, when he saw Pedro’s knee buckle. And, in a post-fight conversation, he discovered why.

“I talked to him in the octagon, he said he ruptured his ACL – which is a serious injury, it has to be taken care of,” Rua said during a post-fight press conference, made available by Submission Radio. “I told him to stay strong, and not give up. Because he’s a guy who has a future ahead of him.”

Why Was Rua Rocked?

This is terrible news for Pedro who later confirmed the injury to Sporting News. Pedro also posted a video to his Instagram account in which the Austrailian declared “no excuses” and promised his fans that he will be “straight back in there” after rehabbing the knee.

As for “Shogun”, the victory puts him back on track after a brutal knockout at the hands of Anthony Smith. He took home an extra $50,000 for his “Performance of the Night” efforts.

Rua knew he was in for a dogfight from the get-go. He was taking on a big, young, athletic, Australian in his own backyard. Pedro had Rua hurt at times, but Rua said it was an incidental head clash that hurt him.

“Actually, I don’t remember it,” Rua said with a laugh when asked about the clash of heads. “When I went to the corner after the first round, I didn’t know if I had lost or won it. I really wasn’t aware that I took a flash (knockdown) there. I found out now, when I left the octagon, that he won the first round. In the second, I was able to win and wear him out a little. I was very happy that I was able to do the strategy.”

After pulling off the upset win, “Shogun” addressed the fans and delivered a somewhat controversial message.

“One more fight, I am ready for the belt,” Rua said with a smile.

A Realistic View Strikes

Backstage, though, Rua was more cautious in his approach to the idea of reclaiming the light heavyweight title that he once owned.

“I won four out of five, but I know I don’t deserve the belt yet,” Rua said. “There are people ahead of me in the title line. My focus now is fighting in Curitiba, in May (though Rua’s hometown of Curitiba has been speculated as a possible destination in Brazil, it hasn’t been confirmed by the promotion yet). That’s my focus. I don’t think about the belt because I know it’s not my shot yet.”

At 37 years old, Rua isn’t demonstrating a desire to slow down. He has two fights left on his current UFC contract and fully intends on honoring them. One thing is quite evident, however. When “Shogun” does call it a career, it will be in his own terms.

“When I stop, I will certainly be an accomplished guy in my career,” Rua said. “I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved, already. Now, I fight for my family, for my team. To make my family and my team proud. And it’s what I love. For sure, this adrenaline of fighting, which makes us tense and nervous – I was talking to (Eduardo Alonso) today, I will miss that when I stop.

“I don’t want to stop and then think that I shouldn’t have stopped. I want to stop when I see that I am really done with fighting, I don’t want to regret having stopped before that.”

Mauricio Rua vs. Tyson Pedro Full Fight Video Highlights

Check out the full fight video highlights from Tyson Pedro and former light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s fight at UFC Adelaide.

In the co-main event of last night’s (Sat. December 1, 2018) UFC Adelaide event, a very interesting light heavyweight contest took place.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua took on rising prospect Tyson Pedro. Rua recently had a three-fight win streak snapped by Anthony Smith. “Lionheart” mauled Rua in Germany this past summer. “Shogun” needed to get back in the win column with a victory over a young rising star like Pedro.

Pedro comes off a disappointing outing against Ovince Saint Preux in June. He was submitted by “OSP” with an armbar in the first round. Pedro has shown great signs of potential inside the cage, and a big win over a former champion in Rua would’ve definitely put him back in the spotlight.

Both men came out scrappy, and drug it into the third round. However, in the end, it was Rua who picked up the TKO victory when the fight went to the ground.

Shogun Rua Reveals Target Date For MMA Retirement

Shogun Rua has a potential retirement date in mind.

The post Shogun Rua Reveals Target Date For MMA Retirement appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Shogun Rua revealed his targeted date to retire from a decorated career in MMA.

The former UFC champion recently saw a win streak disappear when he lost a brutal stoppage to surging contender Anthony Smith at UFC Hamburg.

While Rua may have missed out on a title shot due to the loss, he isn’t making excuses. Rua told MMA Fighting he had a great camp for the fight but simply got caught:

“Everything went right up until the end of the fight. I had a good camp, I had no injuries, I was 100 percent, and unfortunately he landed a straight punch and I got dizzy and he followed up with a flurry of punches and the referee stopped the fight. I think that my mistake was being a little exposed, and that’s when he landed.

“It’s not an excuse. But I was a little bit out of rhythm, with no distance, and that hurt me a little bit. But Anthony had all the merits.”

Rua then went on to describe his feelings at the loss. He’s not buying the talk he should retire, but instead wants to fight again. Overall he plans on fighting out the final three fights on his contract.

The legend claimed he would re-evaluate and would probably call it a career when the contract was done:

“I want to end this contract and then I think I’ll probably stop,” Rua said. “I don’t know. I’ll analyze it with my family and my team, everybody.”

Rua said his family often asked him to retire, but they also knew his passion for the fight game and why he fought on:

“Yes. All the time. They ask for that, but they understand me. Fighting is my work, my career and my passion, so there’s a lot involved. I will stop when I see it really is the right time to stop.”

While his time as a true light heavyweight contender may be closing, Rua insists that won’t deter him. He placed his focus on his next fight camp, whenever and against whom that may be:

“I’ll do everything it takes to get to my best,” Rua said. “I’m the one who wants to win more than anyone. I haven’t thought about it yet, but I’ll evaluate everything with a cool head and think about the next camp.”

UFC Rankings Update: Anthony Smith Surges Up LHW List

Is this high enough for Anthony Smith?

The post UFC Rankings Update: Anthony Smith Surges Up LHW List appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

The official UFC rankings have been updated after last week’s (Sun., July 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 134 from Hamburg, Germany, and not surprisingly, Anthony Smith was the main benefactor.

The surging “Lionheart” brutally knocked out former champion Shogun Rua in the main event, earning the former middleweight the No. 9 spot in his debut on the light heavyweight ranks. Rua dropped three spots to No. 11 for the defeat.

Also at 205 pounds, Corey Anderson rose three spots to No. 6 when he secured the biggest win of his career over former No. 3 Glover Teixeira, who dropped five spots to No. 8. Ilir Latifi, Jan Blachowicz, and Jimi Manuwa all rose one spot to Nos. 3, 4, and 5 respectively.

At pound-for-pound, Conor McGregor inexplicably rose one spot to tie sidelined featherweight champion Max Holloway despite not fighting in the UFC since late 2016, perhaps a product of the thought he may return to action after clearing up his Brooklyn legal trouble this week.
