Brian Ortega makes an encouraging prediction for his upcoming title fight against Max Holloway at the UFC 231 pay-per-view event.

The fight was reported over the weekend that Ortega would challenge the champion for the lightweight title. This is a fight that has been in the making for months now after their original fight date was nixed.

It’s been well documented that Holloway was slated to make his next title defense against the top contender in the co-main event of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event. That show went down in July at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. But Holloway was forced to pull out of the fight.

In a recent interview, Brian Ortega makes his case for the importance of this fight. He also spoke about what fight fans should expect from this highly anticipated fight in the 145-pound division.

Brian Ortega Makes Encouraging Prediction

“Now the world sees why I didn’t take the fight with Jeremy Stephens,” Ortega said. “I’m not trying to down him or nothing. I’m going to stay humble and keep it classy. But that’s the reason, I just didn’t want to fight backwards. It wasn’t the fact that I was afraid. The real fans that understand and appreciate the game. It’s OK, but I’m sorry. We’re going to be patient, but now look. We’re going to give you guys the show that you deserve in December.”

“I want the real title,” Ortega said. “I can’t express it enough that I want to fight for the real title. The interim title, from what I’ve seen … people get it and then they take it away in a month. I just don’t want to be that person. I have nothing against them who earned their shot and took a fight on short notice. All my respect to them. But I want something they cannot take away from me – at least the UFC can’t. If someone’s going to take it from me, it’s going to have to be an opponent, and that’s what I want.”

The UFC 231 pay-per-view is set to take place on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. Preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. The promotion will announce more bouts for this upcoming card in the coming weeks.

Meaning

“I get emotional,” Ortega said to MMA Junkie. “For me to put so much time in and have something like that happen, and I felt like I was thrown under the bus. It sucked, because I felt like I didn’t do anything wrong. If anything, I’ve been doing everything to try to please the promotion. You guys called me for six days on Khabib (Nurmagomedov), I took it. You called me for Frankie (Edgar) on three weeks, I took it. You guys called me back in the day for two weeks on (Thiago) Tavares, I took it. It’s never been a fear thing. It’s never been that I’m not a company man. But at the same time, every step that I’ve taken is a strategic step.”

“Fight of the year,” Ortega said. “To top the year off.”

Max Holloway vs. Brian Ortega

MMAJunkie is reporting that they have learned from two sources that this title fight will go down at the upcoming UFC 231 pay-per-view event. As of this writing, the UFC has yet to officially announce the bout but is expected to do so shortly.

Holloway was slated to make his next title defense against the top contender in the co-main event of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event. That show went down in July at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. But Holloway was forced to pull out of the fight after he had been experiencing concussion-like symptoms. As a result, he was taken to a hospital earlier that week then appeared to be better. However, then it took a turn for the worst and the fight was nixed.

A stroke had been reported with what he was dealing with during UFC 226 fight week but that has been denied by his management.

Ortega beat former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at the UFC 222 pay-per-view, which secured the opportunity to challenge for the featherweight title. He is unbeaten in his MMA career. He holds wins over the likes of Edgar, Cub Swanson, Renato Moicano, and Clay Guida.

Brian Ortega Describes Awkward Conversation With Dana White

Brian Ortega has given some insight into this meeting.

Brian Ortega has shed some light on the wild UFC 226 fight week that he had including a meeting with UFC President Dana White.

It was a wild week so let’s break it down, Ortega was originally slated to challenge Max Holloway for the featherweight title in the co-main event of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada but things went south once it was revealed that Holloway had to pull out of the fight after he had been experiencing concussion-like symptoms and was taken to a hospital.

This was supposed to be a big event for the Las Vegas-based promotion and thus, they tried to save the co-main event as they wanted to have Ortega fight a replacement opponent, which ultimately led to the UFC President trying to get Jeremy Stephens to fill-in on short notice and fight Ortega in the co-headliner slot.

However, Ortega turned down the fight and decided to wait for Holloway to get healthy enough in order to make this fight happen, which led to some people criticizing Ortega for this decision while others can understand his reasoning behind it.

“All of [my team] were on the same page,” Ortega recently told Brendan Schaub on Below the Belt (transcript courtesy of MMAFighting). “It never happened in the history of our team. It’s always like [one guys says] ‘I think you should take it,’ [another guy says] ‘No, you’re stupid!’ and then it’s this thing and we finally come to an agreement. This time, I walked in the room and everyone was on the same page. . .

[So], we talked to Dana and he was pretty pissed off. He was just in a bad mood, a fight fell through, DC just fell, and then he walks in this meeting. So I tell him, ‘Hey, I’m not gonna fight.’ I’m holding my ground. ‘Listen, with all due respect, I stepped in and fought [Thiago] Tavares on two weeks’ notice, I stepped in and I fought Frankie on three weeks’ notice, and I stepped in and tried to fight Khabib [Nurmagomedov] on six days’ notice. It’s not a scared issued, it’s not that I’m not down for the company. I finished everyone you told me to, every single person you put in front of me, I took their heads off and, like Conor [McGregor] says, I put them on your f**king doorstep. That earned me a title shot and now that I’m here, why go anywhere else besides forward?”

Ortega was in a bad spot as the UFC looks at what fighters do for them lately instead of the course of their careers which is a shame that didn’t go over well with the title contender as he noted in this interview that he tried to argue with White over his pay for the event as he had already trained for it and White wasn’t interested in anything but getting his way.

“[Dana] put on his promoter hat and is like, ‘Listen man, just fight, we’ll work something out,’ and I was like, ‘We don’t need to work anything out. I want Max Holloway or I want the belt.’ [Dana says] ‘Well, we’ll see if we can do an interim belt.’ I’m not fighting for a fake belt. It looks cool but it’s not the real belt. There’s no real money involved with that one. Nothing really goes on in terms of being a champion. You just get something that says, ‘I’m first place.’ It just says I’m next in line for the belt but I’m already here! You just want to put something shiny around my waist to make me feel better. No, I’m not gonna do it.

“I showed up, I was cutting weight, I did all the media, even the media in Spanish. I had to do double the work and do all that in Spanish. Every fighter left and I’m still stuck there doing everything in Spanish. I showed I was a company man. I was down to promote the hell out of this fight, I took extra hours while I’m hungry, starving, to keep doing media. I showed up. Don’t you think that’s worth something? Even if I didn’t take the fight, I did my end of the deal. Then they came back and said ‘Well our deal is to find you a fight and we found you a fight and you turned it down. I did my job, you didn’t do yours. Your job is to show up and fight.’”

“I want the belt, I don’t care who has it,” Ortega concluded. “If Max Holloway can’t fight for another six months to a year, that means that would be a full year that he hasn’t defended the title, which means the rules say you’ve got to strip him. I want to fight soon. If he can’t fight, let’s keep fighting. If he can’t fight for awhile, then give me a title fight. It doesn’t matter [against who]. I don’t care. It’s never been about an opponent. I don’t care who it is. Just throw them in front of me and let me do what I have to do. Let me earn the belt.”

Once Holloway is cleared to fight once again, the promotion will book Ortega against the champion for the featherweight title but the only problem with that is due to the fact that we don’t know when that will happen. Most likely later this year but it will be interesting to see if Ortega stays true to his word and waits it out that way he can fight for the strap.

Brian Ortega has reacted to the news of Max Holloway being pulled from the UFC 226 title fight.

Ortega was originally slated to challenge Holloway for the featherweight title in the co-main event of this pay-per-view event.

However, it was revealed the night of July 4th that Holloway had to pull out after he had been experiencing concussion-like symptoms and was taken to a hospital on Monday night.

Things appeared to be on the upswing as he felt better on Tuesday and still wanted to compete. However, late that day, things got worse and the call was made to pull him from this event.

Ortega beat former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at the UFC 222 pay-per-view, which secured the opportunity to challenge for the featherweight title. He is unbeaten in his MMA career and holds wins over the likes of Edgar, Cub Swanson, Renato Moicano, and Clay Guida.

Hours after the news broke, Ortega took to his official Twitter account to give his reaction to the fight being pulled as he wrote the following, “It is what it is.  We’ll run this **** later.”

Based on Ortega’s comments, it appears that he will wait this one out and won’t fight a new opponent on short notice at UFC 226.

It will be interesting to see when this fight is made as one would think Holloway would wait 90 days before fighting again but Holloway is a born fighter and will likely want to fight as soon as possible and if that’s the case then UFC 227 may be the time this fight is made as it takes place next month.

UFC 226 is set to take place on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Frankie Edgar is keeping a close eye on the co-main event of UFC 226.

The former UFC lightweight champion still has his sights set on UFC gold. UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will defend his title against rising contender Brian Ortega at the upcoming UFC 226 pay-per-view event.

Holloway was scheduled to make his next title defense against Edgar at UFC 222 but had to put out due to injury.

If you recall, this bout was originally scheduled for the UFC 218 pay-per-view event. However, Edgar was forced to withdraw from the fight after suffering a broken orbital bone in training.

This led to Holloway fighting Jose Aldo in a rematch, which saw Holloway successfully retain his title with a grisly third-round TKO.

During a recent interview with the MMA Roasted Podcast this week, he gave his prediction for the title fight between Holloway and Ortega as well as made it known that he wants to fight the winner of this fight.

“I’m going to go with Max, he’s the champ,” Edgar said (transcript courtesy of MMANytt). “I think his range and he’s not going to be the shorter guy against Ortega. Ortega, he’s just used to being the long guy and Holloway, I’m sure he’s going to push a good pace and do well with him, but Ortega always finds a way to win. He was losing to Clay Guida, he was losing against Renato [Moicano], but he finds a way to win somehow and you can’t count him out.”

“I’m always training,” Edgar said. “We will see what happens and if the time is right and I feel good then we’ll see. I’d have a hard time saying no. I’m always in striking distance [of making weight] for the most part, but we’ll see. It’s got to make sense.”

“I want to fight the winner of Holloway vs Ortega,” Edgar said. “You know, Dana mentioned it, so I’m definitely in the game. We will have to wait and see what happens I guess.”

Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar managed to get back on track after a devastating knockout loss to Brian Ortega in March.

Seven weeks later, Edgar defeated Cub Swanson a second time, and now “The Answer” wants another shot at featherweight gold.

Edgar has lost twice to former divisional kingpin Jose Aldo but has otherwise cleared out the rest of the division outside of Ortega and Holloway.

“The Answer” made recently his case for the winner of UFC 226’s 145-pound title tilt during this week’s edition of The MMA Hour:

“I still think I’m the guy. S**t, I risked that shot, maybe I shouldn’t have like people said, but I’m going to do it every single time. I still believe I can win that fight (with Ortega). I was doing well in that fight, obviously I got caught and Ortega did a good job of finishing.

“But yeah, I want the winner. I think I deserve it. I’m No. 3. We’ll see what happens.”

The loss to Ortega marked the first time Edgar had ever been knocked out or finished in a fight. At the time, Edgar was already the next in line to fight Holloway, but he took the Ortega fight anyway in a high-risk, low-reward matchup for the former champ.

Do you think Edgar deserves a title shot after winning the Swanson rematch?

Or will “The Answer” have to rack up another win or two to fully erase the Ortega KO?
