Max Rohskopf has been cut by the UFC following his UFC on ESPN 11 fight with Austin Hubbard. In between the second and third rounds of the fight, Rohskopf repeatedly told his coach to, ‘call it’. His coach, Robert Drysdale, tried to talk him out of it, but he just couldn’t get Rohskopf to believe he had it in him.

Rohskopf started off the fight doing great, he was very clearly an incredibly talented kid right from the jump. He opened up the fight with an array of strikes, he was switching stances, and he took Hubbard down with a beautiful suplex.

He was trying hard for a heel hook he’d locked up, but was unable to finish it. He’s a wacky type of grappler, it was fun to watch, and it was working. Hubbard spent a good amount of time on the mat with World BJJ Champion Davi Ramos and didn’t get submitted, he’s a tough guy to submit. There’s no shame in that.

Round two was a much different story however. Rohskopf started this round out with a takedown as well; this time he attempted an Imanari roll, but failed and turned it into a single leg. He was only able to keep Hubbard down for about 40 seconds however, and he spent the rest of the fight getting picked apart.

Him not having the stamina to perform at his highest level is why he decided to quit on the stool. This is because he took the fight on six days notice, and also perhaps because he finished all five opponents he’d fought previous. He came into the fight with a 5-0 record, all wins via submission, and four in the first round.

Rohskopf has an enormous amount of potential, and he’s just 25-years-old. It’s too bad he’s been released from the UFC. Dana White said after the fight that he didn’t know what he’d do with him, and at this point it seems he doesn’t believe him to be worthy of a contract. People close to him that have trained with him have said he’s needed an extra push at times.

The lightweight talent from Ohio had the following to say to MMAFighting on the matter:

“I’ve done this my whole life. I’ve self-boycotted myself. Even when I was wrestling in high school, I was the best in the state and ended up getting third because I self-boycotted myself. I was one of the best guys in the country in college, was never an All-American when it counted, because I was telling myself that, for whatever reason, I don’t deserve it.

“That’s exactly what I did in my fight with Austin. Shit got hard, and I looked at my coach and said, ‘I don’t want to be here anymore.’ Not because I didn’t want to be there, but because I didn’t think I deserved to be there.”

It looks like Max Rohskopf will have to continue his career outside of the UFC, for now at least. Hopefully this isn’t the last we see of him.

Anthony Smith believes that Max Rohskopf isn’t a quitter after retiring on the stool at the end of the second round against Austin Hubbard last Saturday.

The UFC light-heavyweight spoke to his Twitter followers after interviewing Max, he said. ” One of the realest interviews I’ve ever done with someone. Say what you want, the man i talked to today isn’t a quitter. He learned a valuable lesson the hard way and in front of the world. He has character traits that will take him far. Head up, kid. You’re gonna be just fine.”

After taking the fight on five days notice, Rohskopf had some success in round one with his wrestling. However he ultimately faded in the second round as he gassed out in what was scored a 10-8 round. The fighter then urged his corner to call the fight at the end of the round which Max eventually did himself despite his coaches trying to persuade him to continue.

Anthony Smith has joined Dana White in supporting Max’s decision. The UFC boss was speaking at the press conference after the Blaydes v Volkov card where he told reporters “In this sport, if you’re done; you’re done. You should absolutely be able to quit.”

Anthony Smith’s name was recently in the ‘quitting’ debate after he suffered a 5th round TKO to Glover Teixeira. Smith’s corner came under scrutiny for not pulling Anthony out of his main event against Teixeira. The US fighter was damaged and told his corner at the end of the fourth round that his teeth had fallen out. However, Smith spoke after the fight and said he would’ve fired his corner if they would have thrown the towel in.

Do you think Max Rohskov was right to call his fight at the end of round two?

Light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has slammed the corner of UFC newcomer Max Rohskopf who lost against Austin Hubbard this past weekend.

Rohskopf returned to the corner after round two of the fight and repeatedly told his team to throw in the towel. Robert Drysdale who was head coach ignored his fighter’s pleas to end the fight and instead tried to convince him to carry on competing. The fight was eventually waved off when Rohskopf told the referee he didn’t want to carry on at the start of round three.

Drysdale has since come out to defend his actions and said he would 100 percent do the same thing again. Smith though thinks Drysdale was out of line and should have listened to his fighter.

“I’m frustrated for sure. It’s was frustrating to watch and I think the reaction from the fans and the other fighters is more frustrating, especially given the situation I was in not that long ago,” Smith said to TMZ Sports. “I get it, if there is a kid that’s young and facing adversity for possibly, maybe the first real-time in his career and maybe he thinks he doesn’t have it or maybe needs some encouragement. I believe he asked out nine times. This isn’t God damn bloodsport and not all of us think the same.

“Not everybody is me. It’s just different, he is a young kid and he wanted out,” Smith added. “Get him the f**k out of there. He wanted to go home. He said he didn’t have it, he didn’t want to have to do this anymore. That is what he said, I don’t want to do this anymore.

“That’s different than being down on yourself and needing a pick me up. That’s way deeper than that and then to see the fans and the other fighters stick by Drysdale? Listen, I respect Drysdale as much as anybody in the game,” he continued. “That guy is a pioneer in the jiu-jitsu world and I’m a huge fan of his. But, he messed up, he messed up. That needs to be said, this is not the same situation as mine. I did everything I could to stay in there. He was doing everything he could possibly do to get out. Get him out.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Do you think Anthony Smith is right? Should Robert Drysdale have listened to Max Rohskopf’s repeated calls to end the fight?
