Press Release – The Maximum Fighting Championship has released Antonio McKee, Brian Cobb, and James Haddad from their contracts with the organization.
McKee and Cobb were both slated to compete for the MFC lightweight title at MFC 32: Bitter Rivals on Jan. 27, but both fighters came in over the contract weight at the official weigh-in – defending champ McKee by seven pounds and challenger Cobb by one-half pound.
“I was thoroughly disgusted by the lack of professionalism that Antonio McKee showed towards the belt he was scheduled to defend as well as the Maximum Fighting Championship as a organization,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.
“It was unacceptable behavior for a champion to demonstrate. On top of that, Antonio never really apologized for missing weight that badly. That was the end of things for him with the MFC. That’s why he was stripped of his belt immediately and told that he would never fight in the MFC again. I hope it’s a message to all the other fighters in the MFC.”
Cobb, who was coming off a win over Drew Fickett at MFC 30, lost a narrow decision to McKee at MFC 32.
“It’s disappointing to have to release Brian as he is a tremendous character person,” added Pavelich. “Everyone in the MFC has a great deal of respect and admiration for Brian, but unfortunately he admitted to making an error in preparing for the weigh-in and was over the limit. For a title fight that is a big mistake.”
Haddad, who lost via decision to Dan Ring at MFC 32, was over by two pounds for his lightweight bout.

McGillivray, Coy win to set up welterweight title showdown
Press Release – January 28, 2012 – Wilson Gouveia truly proved he is on the right comeback road, while Ryan McGillivray and Nathan Coy each secured their opportunity to win the MFC welterweight title as the Maximum Fighting Championship hosted MFC 32: Bitter Rivals.
The event, emanating from the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, went down before a packed house and live throughout North America on HDNet Fights.
In the MFC’s inaugural five-round, non-title fight, Gouveia (13-8) demolished the lead leg of opponent Dwayne “D-Bomb” Lewis with a barrage of kicks, wearing his foe down to the point that the Brazilian was able to dole out some severe ground-and-pound. After a brief respite as Lewis regained his feet, Gouveia pummelled Lewis again, flattened him out, and rained down punches until referee Jerin Valel stepped in at the 3:19 mark of Round 2.
It was an impressive return to form for Gouveia, who now lives in Miramar, Florida. Gouveia halted a three-fight losing skid and looks to be a dominant figure in the MFC’s light-heavyweight ranks after picking up his fifth career KO/TKO. The loss was especially bitter for Lewis (12-8) as the Fort McMurray, Alberta, product had hoped to also be on the comeback trail following injuries and a failed quest for the title at MFC 28. The defeat was just the second via KO/TKO in Lewis’s career.
Meanwhile, McGillivray (12-5-1) needed to pull out all the stops in the final round of his welterweight clash with Diego Bautista. The submission specialist was nearly choked out in the second round by Bautista (7-1) who also opened a sizeable gash on McGillivray’s forehead in the middle frame. But McGillivray, fighting in front of his hometown crowd in Edmonton, survived and executed his favored armbar to score the victory at 2:25 of Round 3.
It was a triumphant return for McGillivray whose career began in the MFC in 2006. And McGillivray, who earned the Submission of the Night honor, locked up a shot at the vacant MFC welterweight title – a matchup he’ll get against Coy at MFC 33: Collision Course set for May 4.
Coy (10-4) worked an impressive combination of wrestling and striking to outdistance himself from top prospect Dhiego Lima (6-1). Coy, who fights out of Coconut Creek, Florida, registered seven clear-cut takedowns in the fight on his way to a dominant unanimous decision by scores 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28.
Relegated from a title fight down to a three-round affair, former MFC lightweight champ Antonio McKee, who was stripped of his crown after missing the contracted weight by seven pounds, was unusually aggressive early on, and then held on late during a torrid comeback bid to take a unanimous decision from Brian Cobb.
McKee (27-4-2) dropped Cobb twice in Round 1 with side kicks and threw in a mat-pounding suplex late in the opening frame. Cobb (19-7) was all over a fatigued McKee in the third round and appeared to have a rear-naked choke sunk in a couple of times, but couldn’t get the decisive grip. McKee took all three judges’ cards by a count of 29-28.
In an early frontrunner for 2012 MFC Fight of the Year, Jamie Toney (15-7) pounded out a unanimous verdict over Kyle Jackson (7-2). Jackson may have had the highlight of the night with a wicked Superman punch that rattled Toney, but the Bas Rutten-trained Toney battered Jackson throughout to get the clear-cut nod at 30-27 on all judges’ cards.
Other results:
Dan Ring (6-0-1) def. James Haddad (4-2) – majority decision
Matt Jelly (2-1) def. Garrett Nybakken (3-4) – split decision
Brendan Kornberger (3-0) def. Allen Hope (9-10) – TKO, 4:45 Round 1

This past Thursday saw another well known mixed martial arts personality suffer from a bad weight cut, as former Maximum Fighting Championship lightweight title holder Antonio ‘Mandingo’ McKee (27-4-2) hit the scales seven pounds over the 155-lbs limit for his MFC 32 bout versus Brian Cobb.
McKee was stripped of his title by MFC President Mark Pavelich, and, like Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson who is fresh on everyone’s mind after coming in 11-lbs over for his middleweight debut, was cut from the promotion following his bout versus Cobb.
There was some rumbling on various multimedia sites that McKee had failed the weight cut on purpose as a slight to the MFC boss.
McKee took to Facebook (@antoniomckee) to explain his side of the story, saying that he was “blackin out and having internal problems.” Which would certainly be a health issue that would require McKee to rehydrate immediately.
Here’s his full statement:
My body comp. has really changed in the last 6 months or so. I was at 3% bodyfat and was blackin out and having internal problems..just couldnt cut anymore. I am a natural athlete and do not rely on chemicals or any other substances to get myself prepared for battle. I take my job seriously but I can only do so much. Unfortunately, its the unprofessional nature of hot head Pavelich who is taking the hit for the nation my friend! Its not me! I love fighting in CANADA!!! and no worries, I’ll be back… the MFC fucked around and helped boost my stock!!! I have a keen INSTINCT that my AGGRESSION will properly be put to the test in a ring NEARBY SOON! MUCH LOVE
McKee also addressed his recent firing by Pavelich in an interview with The Joe Show for those interested in hearing more of ‘Mandingo’s’ side of the story.
On Friday night, McKee earned his twenty-seventh pro-victory by earning a unanimous decision over Cobb at the MFC 32 event.
The Canadian based Maximum Fighting Championships promotion is set to host it’s latest show tonight with it’s MFC 32: Bitter Rivals show at the Mayfield Inn Trade and Conference Centre from the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Still on the card, but no longer a lightweight title fight, will be a bout between Antonio McKee vs. Brian Cobb. On Thursday, McKee came in seven pounds overweight and was stripped of his title. Headlining will be a five round non-title bout between UFC vet Wilson Gouveia and MFC mainstay Dwayne Lewis.

McKee will still face Cobb on the card but the two will now fight in a three-round bout instead of a five-round title match.
MFC 32: Bitter Rivals is scheduled to take place on January 27, 2012 at the Mayfield Inn Trade and Conference Centre in Edmonton, with the main card airing live on HDNet. The event is headlined by a light heavyweight bout between UFC vet Wilson Gouveia and Canadian Dwayne Lewis. The two are set to meet in the promotions first ever five-round non-title bout main event.
McKee had been on a fourteen fight undefeated streak before he was signed by the UFC and appeared at UFC 125 just over a year ago. At the Las Vegas event, ‘Mandingo’ would end up losing a split decision to Jacob Volkmann and subsequently released by the UFC. McKee did earn fight once since then, earning a submissoin win over Jai Bradney at a CFC 18 event in Australia.
