Dana White Struggling To Find Back-Up For Poirier Vs. McGregor III

Dana White wants to ensure that the UFC 264 goes on without a hitch.

There’s only one problem: White’s struggling to find the right backup fighter for the main event.

White is gambling that UFC 264 will be the biggest PPV event of the year for the promotion. The first full capacity event in the promotion’s hometown, Las Vegas, the scheduled main event is one of the most anticipated rubber matches in recent MMA history. However, the past year has shown the UFC and the rest of the world anything can happen. Therefore, having a contingency plan is critical.  White recognizes the need, but it has been challenging.

Speaking recently with Bleacher Report, White confirmed that finding a suitable backup has not been an easy task. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I’m actually looking for someone right now to be the backup on that card,” White said. “Nobody’s jumping out. Nobody’s kicking down my door.”

To better understand White’s difficulty, it’s essential to understand the activity in the lightweight division thus far in 2021. Dustin Poirier (27-6 MMA, 19-5 UFC) and Conor McGregor (22-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) are ranked one and five in the lightweight division. Many had originally speculated that the rematch would be for the vacated belt after undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov unexpectedly retired.

However, the UFC decided to allow Charles Oliviera and Michael Chandler to compete for the title instead, with Oliveira emerging victorious. Incidentally, the same card saw three of the top six lightweights in action. Both Chandler(#4) and Beneil Dariush (#3) expressed after their fights that they would like time off, hoping to return to the octagon towards the end of the year. Tony Ferguson (#6) suffered a decisive loss that left many wondering if he would retire. So with most of the top of the division tied up, only one name remains a viable option, Justin Gaethje (#2).

With a loss to Poirier and having yet to face McGregor, Gaethje seems like the logical option. However, he has expressed his disappointment with how the UFC has handled him since his loss to Nurmagomedov. Getting an offer to be a backup for the biggest fight of the year is likely not ideal for him at this time.

If both McGregor and Poirier can remain healthy and compete on July 10th, there is no issue. If not, hopefully, one of the top contenders in the division steps up to help White save the card.

Who do you think Dana White should vigorously pursue to be the backup for the UFC 264 main event?

Michael Chandler Down For ‘Fan Favourite’ Fight Against Justin Gaethje

Michael Chandler already has one eye on his next fight after falling short against Charles Oliveira in their scrap for the vacant lightweight title at UFC 262 on May 15.

In a recent interview with TMZ Sports, Dana White suggested that the former interim lightweight champion, Justin ‘The Hightlight’ Gaethje could be next for Chandler after his failed title bid.

“I mean, there’s a few opportunities. He could fight Gaethje, we’ll see,” White said. “We don’t have anything done yet but that makes sense and that’d be a fun fight. Imagine Chandler and Gaethje.”

Speaking to MMA Fighting, Chandler revealed that his plan is to take some time off before jumping back in the Octagon later this year.

“Focus on my health for a couple of months and get back into training camp sometime in the fall,” Chandler said. “I will fight before the end of the year. I will have come into the UFC and a matter of 14 months and fight three times and was the backup for a world title fight one time. That’s pretty darn good on a resume.”

The former Bellator champion seems down for the “fan favourite” fight with Gaethje.

“I think Gaethje-Chandler is probably the biggest fan favorite fight on the entire planet right now,” Chandler said. “I think he becomes a part of my highlight reel or I become a part of his highlight reel and both of us come forward and enjoy a good old fashioned, passionate scrap. That’s how he’s wired. That’s how I’m wired.

Justin Gaethje’s been on the tips of the UFC’s tongue, our tongue, myself and my management, since we signed with the UFC. It just hasn’t worked out that way for numerous different reasons.”

Eddie Alvarez: Justin Gaethje Is A ‘Terrible’ Matchup For Michael Chandler

Eddie AlvarezFormer UFC lightweight champion and current ONE Championship lightweight contender, Eddie Alvarez, has offered his thoughts on the likely matchup between ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler and Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje following Chandler’s unsuccessful attempt to claim the UFC lightweight title from Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira at UFC 262. Despite both fighters suffering losses in their most […]

Eddie Alvarez

Former UFC lightweight champion and current ONE Championship lightweight contender, Eddie Alvarez, has offered his thoughts on the likely matchup between ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler and Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje following Chandler’s unsuccessful attempt to claim the UFC lightweight title from Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira at UFC 262.

Despite both fighters suffering losses in their most recent title fights, UFC President Dana White still appears keen to match Chandler and Gaethje together, possibly as a title eliminator matchup. One man who has faced them both is Eddie Alvarez. Both of his Bellator encounters with Chandler were legendary in their own right, whilst his brutal slugfest with Gaethje at UFC 218 was a strong Fight of The Year contender.

Speaking to Chisanga Malata, Alvarez offered his two cents on their potential fight, he said. “I think Gaethje is a terrible match-up for him, and I think he should probably stay away from Gaethje. That’s not a good matchup for him. But we’ll see, man. It’s really up to him and his desire. We’ll only know on fight night.”

Alvarez does make an interesting point. Whilst Michael Chandler is as tough as they come (proving that in the first round against Charles Oliveira), Gaethje is violence personified. He loves the stand-and-bang, rock-em sock-em approach, and he has world class amateur wrestling as well, so it’s very clear that this would be no simple, bloodless affair for Michael Chandler.

Ultimately though, as Alvarez himself said, it all comes down to fight night. And there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that there is not a fighter alive more qualified to produce such an opinion than Eddie Alvarez; he managed to overcome Chandler in their second match-up at Bellator 106, and he managed to get a TKO finish over one of the toughest fighters on the planet at UFC 218, who’s only other losses were to Dustin Poirier and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

This fight will undoubtedly be a wild affair, and it is extremely interesting to consider how it will turn out if it does eventually occur. One thing is for sure though – neither fighter is going to take a step backward, and both fighters will leave it all in the Octagon come what may.

Do you agree with Eddie Alvarez? Is Justin Gaethje a terrible match-up for Michael Chandler?
