A rematch between Michael Chandler and Benson Henderson is set to take place at Bellator Japan.

The bout was made official by Bellator recently and will serve as the co-main event of the promotion’s debut show in Japan which takes place December 28 at the Saitama Super Arena. It will be contested at a catchweight of 160 pounds.

Chandler and Henderson first collided at Bellator 165 back in November 2016. The former came out on top on that occasion winning via split decision to retain his lightweight title at the time.

Since then, Chandler would lose his title twice, most recently earlier this year after getting knocked out by Patricio “Pitbull” Freire. In total, he has gone 3-2.

Henderson, meanwhile, would lose another split decision to Patricky Freire but is currently on a four-fight winning streak. His most recent victory was a unanimous decision win over the debuting Myles Jury at Bellator 227 last month.

Although this is a catchweight, the winner should be next in line to challenge Freire for the lightweight title.

Bellator Japan will be headlined by a heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

What do you think of the fight?

Patricio Freire is riding high off his Bellator lightweight title victory over Michael Chandler – and he’s not shy to show it.

Freire took to Twitter today (Sat. May 25, 2019) and rubbed in his first-round knockout victory by tagging Chandler in the following message:

“I’m faster than you, and bigger than you, and more powerful than you. And every single aspect that you think you’re good, in this sport, I’m superior.”

Chandler was quick to respond, telling “Pitbull” to keep his name out of his mouth unless he accepts their rematch:

“Don’t say my name unless you take the rematch…”

Freire made it clear he takes orders from nobody, and will do whatever he wants:

“I do whatever the fuck I want. How did those tears taste?”

The pair main evented Bellator 221 in Rosemont, Illinois earlier this month (Sat. May 11, 2019). Freire, the featherweight champion of the world, challenged for Chandler’s then-lightweight belt. It only took “Pitbull” one minute to dispatch of Chandler, finishing him via TKO.

Now, Freire sits alongside light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Ryan Bader as the only two “Champ Champs” in Bellator. It will be interesting to see if Freire decides to grant Chandler an immediate rematch next.

Michael Chandler has released a statement following his Bellator 221 defeat.

Chandler was defeated this past weekend (Sat. May 11, 2019) by Patricio Freire in the main event of the night. After falling via TKO in the opening minute, Chandler lost his 155-pound title. It was only the second time in his career that Chandler was finished via strikes, the first coming against Will Brooks in 2014.

Now, nearly a week removed from the defeat, Chandler has taken to Instagram to issue a lengthy statement on the loss. Check out what he had to say below:

“This sport has never been about the wins and the losses for me. I realize that is a very easy thing to say after you have lost a fight. I refuse to say it doesn’t sting. I refuse to say I haven’t shed a tear or two over it. I’m not ashamed to say it hurts. But this sport is as merciless and unforgiving as it is beautiful and exhilarating.

We can’t enjoy the spoils of the good without also accepting the pains of the bad. When I woke up Sunday morning I woke up a winner for more reasons than I can count. In the last few days I’ve spent quality time with my family and in a weird way this loss and the embarrassment that accompanies it has made me love them and myself deeper.

It has made me love the fans deeper. It has made me love this sport deeper. Getting knocked down and embarrassed for the whole world to see is never easy. The naysayers have been and will continue to come out of the woodwork. The constant struggle to block out the negativity and focus only on the good has been a mountainous task, but a battle I am winning.

I relish in the notion that this journey is far from over and I am certain that the best is yet to come. Picture me sitting somewhere out there right now…with a confident smirk on my face because I secretly love my back against the wall. I secretly love being the hunter and not the hunted.

I thrive in an environment where I have nothing to lose. You thought you’ve seen hard work before? You haven’t seen anything yet. I’m plotting… See you at the top!”
