Oh, buddy, you better not go after the moms.
There might be nothing in the world that will rile a guy up quicker than a comment about their mom, and that very much played itself out at the UFC’s Summer Kickoff press conference back in May.
Sure, it didn’t happen that long ago, but it was so iconic as the type of absurdity so often seen in MMA that it warrants recapping given Kevin Lee and Michael Chiesa will settle their score this weekend.
It all starts pretty casually, with Lee wearing a comically overwrought shirt—wide open, of course—and bandana. In something of a starmaking turn, he’s taking digs at Chiesa while talking up the fight and his newfound place as a main eventer.
Relatively harmlessly, it first appears, Lee makes the comment, “I know his momma got tickets,” and seems ready to go on sassing his future opponent. He doesn’t get the chance, though.
Chiesa, not exactly known as a wild firebrand full of explosive outbursts, leaps from his seat and shouts: “You shut the f–k up about my mom!”
What ensues is the two men shouting over one another briefly, with Chiesa pointing and repeating variations of “don’t you ever talk about my mom” before he finally decides to take action. He declares his intention to “slap the f–k out of” Lee and storms across the dais to do just that.
The other athletes on stage range from horrified to cheerleading as the two lightweights meet in the aisle amid a horde of UFC security, who fail miserably at their job of breaking up the brawl when Chiesa eats a big overhand right. Things are eventually put to a halt after that.
Some people loved it, others thought it was the type of trashy silliness better suited to a Jerry Springer episode, but it undeniably got people talking about a pretty exciting fight that was otherwise likely to fly under the radar during the UFC’s busy season.

Kevin Lee continues to mention Michael Chiesa’s mother in the lead-up to their UFC Oklahoma City meeting this weekend (Sun. June 25, 2017).
Earlier this year, Lee and Chiesa were a part of the UFC’s Summer Kickoff press conference, which got heated after Lee mentioned Chiesa’s mother. “Maverick” leaped across the stage and pounced on “The Motown Phenom,” only to eat a punch from Lee as security step in in between the two.
Lee enters the contest on a four fight win streak, with his last three victories coming by way of finish. Chiesa is on a three fight win streak and has submitted his past two opponents in the second round via rear-naked choke. The pair of proven finishers are sure to put on a heck of a bout come fight night this weekend, but that doesn’t mean Lee won’t throw a few verbal shots before they get into the Octagon.
During a recent media scrum at UFC headquarters to promote the event, Lee claimed that the fight between he and Chiesa could drag into the deep waters of the championship rounds, which will allow him to showcase his skillset (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“He’s tough,” Lee said. “He’s going to stay in there for 25 minutes. I think that’s going to play even more into my game. It’s going to let me really showcase my skills. I think I’m built for five rounds.
“When you get into those championship rounds, skill sets everything apart. It’s no longer how fast, how strong you are, because you’re both tired. It’s going to be the skill, and the skills are going to shine.”
Lee believes that he holds the advantage in every aspect of this fight against The Ultimate Fighter Season 15 (TUF 15) winner, and predicts he’ll break him mentally early in the first round. He then brought up Chiesa’s mother yet again, which sparked their altercation that occurred a few months back:
“I think he understands that I’m just a better fighter,” Lee said. “When it boils down to skill vs. skill, I’m younger, faster, more experienced, stronger. I’ve got all the balls in my court, baby. I think he understands that, and that’s why he gets frustrated. And he’ll get frustrated. After two minutes of the first round, he’ll understand.
“Mentally, he’ll break. He’s going to stay in there for the long run. He’ll go into a defensive shell. He don’t want to get beat up in front of his mama. So he’s going to go into a defensive shell and try not to get knocked out. But he’s going to be in for a long night, baby.”
According to Lee, he and Chiesa couldn’t be any more different. From their current lifestyle choices to the way they present themselves, the No. 11-ranked lightweight feels he needs to step up his fashion game to pick up the slack for the both of them:
“We’re polar opposites in every way,” Lee said. “He’s a country boy from the middle of the railwoods. He drives an old pickup truck. I’m out here in Las Vegas driving a Benz and wearing a couple of grand on me. We clash in every way, shape and style. The man’s still rocking a mullet, for God’s sakes.
“So I’m just trying to get the people – one of us has got to have some style in this game. It’s only two of us. I’ve got to pick up the slack for both of us.”
With the recent death of former MMA fighter and boxer Tim Hague, who passed away after suffering a knockout inside the squared circle, the possibility (however slight it may be) that he could die fighting inside the Octagon has crossed Lee’s mind as of late. “The Motown Phenom” claims to have come to terms with that possibility when he signed on the dotted line to fight Chiesa – who’s family he mentioned yet again:
“I take it very personally because – Tim Hague just died doing this,” Lee said. “It’s serious stuff. It’s not a game, it’s not a joke. I know I’m taking years off my life to do this. I’ve kind of already come to terms with that when I signed that line. Whenever I sign that agreement, I know. It might be a one-in-a-million chance, but if you’re the one, who gives a (expletive)? You’re the one, it’s a 100 percent chance for you. You could die out there. So I take it very seriously. I take every fight very seriously. I take it very personal.
“When you’re coming after me, when you sign that line to fight me, we ain’t friends. I don’t really (expletive) with you, I don’t really know you, I don’t want really to know you. I don’t watch his interviews, I don’t give a damn about him. I’ll say that to him, I’ll say that to his mama, I’ll say that to his grandmama. I’ll say it to anybody.”

There are a lot of fighters in the UFC’s lightweight division that are frustrated due to the fact that its champion has yet to defend the title since winning back in November at UFC 205. Michael Chiesa, who will headline a show in Oklahoma City this weekend where he takes on rival Kevin Lee, is one of them.
He is number six ranked in the division, and a win over Lee could get him into the top five to put him one step closer to a title shot. The reason that McGregor is not defending the title anytime soon is pretty obvious. He’s taking a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather.
Chiesa vented his frustration about that on a recent episode of the Fight Society podcast (via Fox Sports).
“We don’t need to beat around the bush. Conor’s doing what he’s doing is f—king retarded. What Conor is doing is ridiculous. It’s a tricky decision, and it’s all tricky because we’re sitting and waiting for one guy to do something, and you’ve got 10 guys spring loaded to do something. Like we’re all gunning to be world champion, and it sucks just having to sit back and wait to see what this guy does.
“By the time the Floyd fight happens, his belt will have not moved for a year. This division has already been plagued by delays. Look when (Anthony) Pettis was champion, how many fights we had. We had none. There’s never been an interim title. Once again the lightweight division is back logged so it kind of sucks. It really does.”
Chiesa will give McGregor credit though, which is that the money he’s getting for the Floyd fight is pretty much impossible to turn down. With that kind of money, most people, including Chiesa, can understand why it’s happening.
“As upset as I am in the state of the lightweight division, I’d probably do the same thing if I were Conor and I had $100 million waiting for me. I don’t blame him for doing what he’s doing, but it sucks for the rest of us.”
Chiesa will fight Lee in the main event of UFC Fight Night 112 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City on this Sunday.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor continues to annoy his fellow fighters by not defending his title just yet.
McGregor won the UFC’s lightweight title in the main event of UFC 205 last November when he finished Eddie Alvarez in the second round of their Madison Square Garden meeting. With his win, McGregor became the first-ever simultaneous two-division champ in the history of the promotion.
Shortly after the win, the Irishman announced that he would be taking some time off to enjoy the birth of his first son, however, his time off quickly turned into one of the biggest business deals of his professional fighting career.
“The Notorious One” has now signed on the dotted line to jump over to the world of boxing, and step into the ring with (arguably) the greatest to ever lace up a pair of gloves in Floyd Mayweather Jr. The pair are expected to fight at the T-Mobile Arena on Showtime Boxing pay-per-view (PPV) on August 26th.
This means that come fight night against Mayweather, McGregor will have avoided defending his 155-pound title for nine months. UFC President Dana White is still adamant that “The Notorious One” will fight again in the UFC before year’s end. But that isn’t enough for No. 7-ranked lightweight Michael Chiesa.
Chiesa, who takes on No. 12-ranked Kevin Lee in the main event of UFC Oklahoma City this weekend (Sun. June 25, 2017), recently spoke on the matter on The Fight Society podcast and expressed his displeasure for McGregor’s outside antics putting the lightweight division on hold (quotes via FOX Sports):
“We don’t need to beat around the bush. Conor’s doing what he’s doing is [expletive] retarded. What Conor is doing is ridiculous,” Chiesa said. “It’s a tricky decision, and it’s all tricky because we’re sitting and waiting for one guy to do something, and you’ve got 10 guys spring loaded to do something. Like we’re all gunning to be world champion and it sucks just having to sit back and wait to see what this guy does.
“By the time the Floyd [Mayweather] fight happens, his belt will have not moved for a year. This division has already been plagued by delays. Look when [Anthony] Pettis was champion, how many fights we had. We had none. There’s never been an interim title. Once again the lightweight division is back logged so it kind of sucks. It really does.”
If he’s able to get past Lee, Chiesa plans on making a move up to the UFC’s welterweight division to keep busy until McGregor is ready to come back to the UFC and get things rolling at lightweight again:
“I win this fight, I feel like I win this fight I’m on a four-fight win streak, give me a top five guy. I win, give me a title shot, let’s move on,” Chiesa said. “If not, I’ll maintain my relevance, I’ll go up to 170 [pounds] and fight guys until Conor starts making moves and then I’ll come back down. The lightweight division is the most competitive in the world and it’s a shame that we don’t get the chance to showcase it because we have a champion that’s sitting around.
“As upset as I am in the state of the lightweight division, I’d probably do the same thing if I were Conor and I had $100 million waiting for me. I don’t blame him for doing what he’s doing but it sucks for the rest of us.”
With a potential win over Lee, “Maverick” feels that he’ll be placed in the top ranks of the 155-pound division alongside No. 1-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov and No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson:
“I think it puts me in a great spot. It will boil down to pretty much me, Khabib [Nurmagomedov], [Tony] Ferguson and [Edson] Barboza,” Chiesa said. “I mean Eddie [Alvarez] is still in there but he wants his rematch with [Dustin] Poirier so I think I win this fight, I almost fought Tony back in July. Then I was the back-up guy for UFC 209 with Khabib when Tony wasn’t signing his contract.
“So I think these things going on behind the scenes, a win over Kevin Lee will definitely jump me in line not only in the rankings but also in the political side of things, which we all know numbers don’t matter. It’s all in the politics.”
If he got his pick of the cream of the crop, the Ultimate Fighter Season 15 (TUF 15) winner would love to step into the Octagon with “El Cucuy,” who is currently on a nine fight win streak and is primed to challenge for the lightweight title whenever the opportunity arises. Regardless if he’s able to get the fight with Ferguson, however, Chiesa is open to throwing down with all comers:
“More than anything, I’d like the Ferguson fight,” Chiesa said. “I got so close to it. That’s the only one that really gets to me but first come first serve. I’m up for whoever.”
