Strikeforce and Showtime on Saturday made official a pair of bouts for its July 30 card outside Chicago.

Women’s welterweight champion Marloes Coenen will defend her title against Miesha Tate on the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson card at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., a northwest Chicago suburb. In addition, the promotion made official a light heavyweight bout between Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and Roger Gracie.

Both fights will take place on the main card in support of the headlining superfight between light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson and heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko.

Coenen fights for the first time since defeating Liz Carmouche at Strikeforce’s March event in Columbus, Ohio. There, she stopped Carmouche with a fourth-round triangle to win in a fight that Carmouche was mostly dominating. It will be her second defense of the title after winning it against Sarah Kaufman in October.

Coenen was originally scheduled to face Tate in march in Columbus, but an injury kept her out and Carmouche stepped in on late notice to fill the void.

And Lawal will return for the first time in nearly a year, since losing his light heavyweight title in his first defense against Rafael Cavalcante, the first loss of his career. Gracie comes in unbeaten at 4-0, all by submission. But he has fought just once in the last year – a submission win over Trevor Prangley in January.

Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson will air live on Showtime.

Gina CaranoThese are uncertain times for women’s mixed martial arts. Strikeforce has been the industry leader in female fights, while the UFC has maintained that it has no interest in putting women in the Octagon. So now that the UFC runs Strikeforce, does that mean women’s MMA is endangered?

Not necessarily. The Strikeforce women were invited to the UFC’s recent fighter summit in Las Vegas, which indicates that Zuffa thinks women have a future within the company, and next month’s return of the sport’s biggest female star, Gina Carano, will result in a publicity boost for women’s MMA.

So as I review the top 10 female fighters in mixed martial arts, I’m confident that it’s a list of fighters whose futures are bright. Even if I’m not sure where and when most of them will fight next.

Several of Strikeforce elite female fighters made their first trip out to The Fight Summit, which is an MMA business conference run by Zuffa. As the promotion now resides under the Zuffa umbrella, Strikeforce fighters including: Miesha Tate, Cris Cyborg, Amanda Nunes, Sarah Kaufmann, Elaina Maxwell and Marloes Coenen attended the 2 day conference in Las Vegas. Were there discussions of seeing these females sometime in the future fighting under the UFC promotion? That may be very top secret, but we do know that the ladies and all the Strikeforce fighters participated in new photo shoots and videos promos for upcoming Strikeforce broadcasts and advertising.

And now some photos of Miesha Tate:

Marloes Coenen Makes the Case for Women’s Divisions in Zuffa

MMA Fighting recently spoke to Strikeforce 135-pound women’s champion Marloes Coenen about when she plans on defending her title again, why it was “a little bit strange” that Miesha Tate pulled out of their title fight, why she is confident Zuffa will keep a women’s division in Strikeforce and what it was like being Alistair Overeem’s intern in Thailand.

Zuffa-Strikeforce Deal Could Mean Uncertain Future for Women’s MMA

Of all the Strikeforce fighters who are struggling to figure out what the sale of their employer to its biggest rival will mean for them, it’s the women on the roster who are in perhaps the most precarious position.

Despite UFC president Dana White’s assurances that it’s “business as usual” for Strikeforce after being purchased by Zuffa, the female fighters now find themselves working for a company that is owned in part by a man who isn’t a big fan of what they bring to the table. As you can imagine, it’s a situation that makes some of them very nervous about the future of women’s MMA in general, as well as for their own jobs.

“I am a little worried,” said 135-pound Strikeforce fighter Miesha Tate. “I just don’t know what’s going to happen. Now we’re all under Zuffa, and the one man who’s the big voice there can’t appreciate women’s fighting.”

Just 10 days before she’s set to defend her Strikeforce title belt for the first time, Marloes Coenen has been given a new opponent.

Liz Carmouche will fight Coenen for the Strikeforce women’s 135-pound title, replacing Miesha Tate, who suffered a knee injury in training.

Carmouche is 5-0 and is coming off an impressive third-round TKO win over Jan Finney on a November Strikeforce Challengers card. She’s also got a good personal story that Strikeforce can sell, as a former Marine and Iraq War veteran. But Carmouche isn’t quite on Tate’s level, and she’ll have to be considered a major underdog against Coenen.
