Dustin Poirier just can’t help himself.

The former interim UFC lightweight champion loves “jumpin’ the gilly” anytime the opportunity presents itself. That was never more present than during his clash with Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 in March. ‘The Diamond’ made multiple attempts to choke out the Frenchman with his favorite maneuver despite being explicitly told not to by head coach Mike Brown.

Following the first round of his scrap with Saint-Denis, Brown was caught on camera telling Poirier to stop with the guillotines. As it turns out, there was more to the conversation that the cameras missed.

“They actually didn’t play it in between the rounds, after the first round I said, ‘No more guillotines,’ and then they switched to the other corner,” Brown told MMA Fighting. “But right after I said that, Dustin said, ‘No, but I can hit it! I can hit it!’ I just replied, ‘You crazy bastard.’

“I literally said that and then he went and jumped another one. They didn’t play that part, but there was more words said after I said don’t jump the guillotine.”

Dustin Poirier ultimately won the fight with a spectacular second-round comeback KO.

‘The Diamond’ has never actually finished one of his opponents inside the Octagon with a guillotine, but he’s done it plenty of times at the gym according to Brown.

“He puts a lot of guys to sleep in the gym, to be honest,” Brown said. “He does have a very good one. He just hasn’t hit them in the fight.”

Dustin Poirier has nothing left to prove

Dustin Poirier’s undeniable love for guillotines has taken on a life of its own following the Saint-Denis fight, but this is far from the first time that Brown has been left frustrated by the lightweight’s love for the move.

“The fight where I was losing my mind is the fight with [Dan] Hooker,” Brown said. “Because he had lost the first two rounds and then he was battling back and then he was jumping guillotine in those later rounds, and had he got stuck on bottom in any one of those rounds, he would have lost the third round and wouldn’t have won the decision.

“But somehow he wouldn’t hit the guillotine, but he would somehow scramble to get back to his feet and start dropping bombs on him and doing damage, and then somehow stealing the round anyway. He would somehow find a way to make it work. He made us sweat and bite our nails in that one, that’s for sure.”

Three months removed from his return to the win column against Saint-Denis, Poirier will step into the main event spotlight at UFC 302 on Saturday, June 1. There, he will square off with reigning lightweight world champion Islam Makhachev in what will likely be his last crack at UFC gold.

Poirier previously challenged Makhachev’s mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, five years ago at UFC 242. ‘The Diamond’ went for a guillotine and had fans on the edge of their seat, believing he could hand the Dagestani the first loss of his mixed martial arts career.

Instead, ‘The Eagle’ escaped and used his position on top to reign down a flurry of strikes before securing a rear-naked choke in round three.

Dustin Poirier

If he can pull off the guillotine against Nurmagomedov’s protege in The Garden State next month, it would be nothing short of poetic.

“It absolutely could happen,” Brown said. “He’s done so much in the sport. I almost feel like he doesn’t have anything more to prove, but this is the one box he has to check. I feel like he’s a champion even though he hasn’t won a title, a true UFC title. He’s won the interim. I feel like he’s a champion in my eyes.”

Conor McGregor, Jorge Masvidal

Conor McGregor has responded to claims made by Jorge Masvidal’s coach.

McGregor has remained out of action since his last outing against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. While he has been swift in recovery from the broken fibula he suffered, other fighters have called out for a potential showdown with the biggest draw in the sport.

‘The Notorious’ fires back at Mike Brown

Jorge Masvidal took his aim at the Irish superstar as he called him “false” and accused him of being “too scared” to accept the fight with him. Not one to keep shy, McGregor was quick to respond to the Florida native in reference to his alleged physical altercation with best friends turned rival Colby Covington.

‘The Notorious’ called Masvidal “an absolute pigeon brain” following his comments. Masvidal hit back at McGregor claiming he won’t accept an offer to get the biggest paycheck of his life.

In the past, UFC President Dana White had shut down talks of a potential matchup between the two stating that Masvidal was too big for the former two-division champion. McGregor has expressed interest to take on the reigning UFC Welterweight king Kamaru Usman although an immediate title shot may not be the best option.

As McGregor jacks up for a return back to 170-lbs, Masvidal’s coach Mike Brown rallied behind ‘Gamebred’ for a contest with him. In a now-deleted tweet, Conor McGregor responded to Brown’s comments with some incendiary statements.

“Mike Brown is a little smell bag. Never a champ. Never produced one. Take a shower Mike the pong of B.O off you.” (h/t Mirror)

Masvidal is one of the biggest stars in the promotion and is arguably the second biggest draw after ‘Mystic Mac’. A collision between the two will almost guarantee massive numbers at the box office and make for good business for the UFC.

UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier has revealed how his coach reacted when he called out former teammate Colby Covington on Twitter.

Having defeated former American Top Team training partner Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 earlier this year, it seems that the promotion is looking to match Covington up with another of his former ATT peers.

As well as accepting the multiple callouts “Chaos” has previously sent his way on social media and naming UFC 277 on July 30 as a possible fight date, Poirier, who remains a part of the Coconut Creek, Florida-based gym, claimed he’d been offered the fight by the UFC during an appearance on The MMA Hour.

That wasn’t the only revelation “The Diamond” made while talking to Ariel Helwani, as he also disclosed the reaction of Coach Mike Brown, who evidently gave Poirier a firm reminder of the personal attacks and insults that would naturally come his way ahead of a matchup with Covington.

“Mike Brown called me the other day and was like, ‘DP, if you take that fight, it’s gonna be two months of that, of them talking about your family and making this stuff up. I don’t know if you want to put your wife and daughter through that,’ but I’ve already hit pull on the tweet,” said Poirier.

The last man to experience Covington’s trash-talking ways was Masvidal. But after failing to punish the former interim titleholder in the Octagon, “Gamebred” sought to do so on the streets, where he reportedly sucker-punched the #1-ranked welterweight from behind.

While a clash with Poirier, who has experience dealing with a similar pre-fight build having shared the Octagon with Conor McGregor after a number of personal attacks prior to UFC 264, likely wouldn’t be taken to the streets, their history and previous back and forth would certainly lay a nice foundation for an animosity-fueled matchup.

Although given that he’s citing brain damage as an injury suffered as a result of Masvidal’s alleged attack, it probably wouldn’t help Covington’s cause to accept a cage fight off the back of that claim…

Dustin Poirier Coach: Nate Diaz Fight Would Be ‘Monster’, But Title First

Dustin Poirier‘s coach knows a fight between his student and Nate Diaz would be massive, but wants to see Poirier get the lightweight title first.

Many assume Poirier will be granted a title opportunity in his next outing. He’s been on fire as of late, winning a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender against Dan Hooker before picking up a pair of wins over Conor McGregor. Though his latest victory came under less than ideal circumstances, he is still widely viewed as the number-one contender to the lightweight championship.

In a recent interview with MyMMANews, Mike Brown, one of the top coaches at American Top Team, gave his thoughts about what is next for ‘The Diamond’ (BJPenn.com).

“I’m assuming the title will probably be next, who knows,” Brown said. “I see there’s some talks maybe potentially [about] a Nate Diaz fight. I’m sure that would do giant numbers. They were scheduled to fight before, it kind of fell through. But that would be monster. Something everybody would want to see. Maybe they could do it at welterweight, nobody’s got to cut weight, kind of a fun fight for the fans. But I think probably first, business is winning the undisputed lightweight title.”

Charles Oliveira claimed the lightweight title in his last fight, stopping Michael Chandler in the second round at UFC 262. It is widely believed that ‘Do Bronx’ would have faced Poirier at that event if the latter had not decided to partake in the trilogy fight against McGregor instead. Brown gave his thoughts on what a fight between the two men would look like.

“Like every Poirier fight, it’s gonna be super exciting, a lot of violence, a lot of pressure, and probably a D.P. finish,” he said.

On top of potential bouts against Diaz and Oliveira, there’s another fight that could possibly be on the horizon. Poirier and McGregor have continued their banter on social media since their last fight, with ‘The Notorious’ claiming that the only reason Poirier picked up the victory was due to the broken leg McGregor suffered during the fight. He has even gone so far as to call Poirier’s victory “illegitimate”, and there have been cries to make a fourth bout between the two. Though Brown wouldn’t rule the possibility out, he said he doesn’t see it happening anytime soon.

“Who knows, right? It’s all about entertainment, what people want to see,” Brown said. “Money talks. But I mean, he’s gonna be out for a while so I don’t anticipate it anytime soon and I think there’s some other things that Dustin wants to take care of first. I would never say never to anything but I don’t see it in the near future.”

Mike Brown thinks Dustin Poirier turning down a UFC title shot to fight Conor McGregor at UFC 264 on July 10 is absolutely the right choice.

The American Top Team head coach fully supports his student who will undoubtedly secure the biggest pay day of his career when fighting McGregor for a third time at an event Brown feels could break the pay-per-view record.

“Yeah, this is the right choice,” Brown told MMA Junkie. “Conor is the biggest draw in this sport, and I think this well sell more pay-per-views than any other fight. This potentially will be the biggest pay-per-view of all time. It really has that capability, and it probably will. I believe that, and the title fight will always be there after.

“He’s still getting better all the time, and another guy who has paid his dues more than anyone,” Brown added. “These are the guys that took the long road, the guys that deserve it more than anybody.”

At UFC 257, Poirier was able to avenge the most devastating loss of his career against McGregor. ‘The Diamond’ wrestled early before finding success of the feet with calf kicks. Poirier then used his elite-level boxing skills to stop the Irishman inside two rounds.

Brown believes McGregor and his team are focusing too much on defending calf kicks ahead of UFC 264.

The ATT coach insists the kicks it wasn’t the low leg kicks that got Poirier the win earlier this year.

“I think Conor believes that the calf kicks is what really was the major problem, but it wasn’t the calf kicks that knocked him out,” Brown said. “So I like where we’re sitting in this fight, and I’m very confident going into it.

“The fight game is very complex. This is one weapon of potentially thousands or more. We’re talking about one weapon there. Dustin has got a lot of them.”
