Mike Perry is not one to mince words. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight is coming off the first loss of his professional career to Alan Jouban. That isn’t stopping “Platinum” from firing shots at other 170-pounders.
Perry recently spoke to BJPenn.com‘s Chris Taylor. He was asked about the fight between Donald Cerrone and Matt Brown back at UFC 206. While “Platinum” gave the fight its due, that’s where the compliments ceased:
“Yeah that Matt Brown versus Cerrone scrap was a great fight man. I seen that kick coming everyday and all day. But yeah it was a great fight. Both of those guys are good fighters and have a good fan base. But as far as I am concerned, f*ck them both. Brown is an old man and Cerrone’s time is almost up. If it came down to business between me and Matt Brown, I would end his career.”
Cerrone knocked Brown out in the third round with a head kick. The fight pushed “Cowboy’s” winning streak to four. Meanwhile, “The Immortal” suffered his third straight loss.
If Perry is able to get a bout with Brown, it’ll be his highest profile bout to date. Brown sits at No. 14 on the UFC welterweight rankings. Perry is currently unranked.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight Mike Perry made people take notice in his UFC debut. He earned a TKO win over Hyun Gyu Lim at UFC 202 back in August 2016. “Platinum” followed that performance up by knocking out Danny Roberts in the third round at UFC 204.
Perry was then booked to face Alan Jouban at the UFC on FOX: VanZant vs. Waterson card last month. While “Platinum” felt on top of the world after two knockout wins in the UFC, reality came knocking. He tasted defeat for the first time in his professional career.
Speaking with Chicago Land Sports (via Flo Combat), Perry acknowledge that there is room to grow from the loss and he is still developing:
“I learned that I got more to learn and that I can make simple mistakes. Everything that week was right. Everything, all my emotions, energy, my workouts, everything was great, but it wasn’t my night and of course I could’ve done more. That showed in the result of me taking the ‘L.’ The next time I’ll do more, I’ll do whatever it takes and I’ll come out with the ‘W’ man.”
While “Platinum” would love to get another crack at “Brahma,” he also has his sights set on another 170-pounder. The last man to beat Jouban was Albert Tumenov and he did so via TKO. Even though Tumenov has lost two in a row, Perry is still adamant about fighting the K Dojo Warrior Tribe member.
“I’m looking for the Albert Tumenov fight because he beat Alan Jouban and he’s a tough kid. I’d love to fight Alan again. Even if he chooses to move that way and run that way again, I know how to stop it this time. It really doesn’t matter who, but I want to get that Albert Tumenov fight.”

Michelle Waterson, Alan Jouban and Mickey Gall all had something in common last Saturday night. Each of them in their own way were responsible for shutting down some major hype trains. Waterson, Jouban, and Gall each had the responsibility of battling fighters who have considerable upside. That’s not to say that Paige Vanzant, Mike Perry, and Sage Northcutt don’t have a future. In fact, if nothing else the losses these three sustained were absolutely necessary for their career advancement.

In fact, if nothing else the losses these three sustained were absolutely necessary for their career advancement.
For Sage Northcutt the message was simple: stay at 155 lbs. Sure, Mickey Gall called out the young talent, but it wasn’t reason enough to fight the New Jersey native. It was a high risk, moderate reward situation that forced Northcutt to fight at a weight class that he hasn’t done very well in this far. Sage Northcutt’s handlers should have looked at the bigger picture and understood that having the twenty year old build slowly in the right division is going to be the key to the young man’s success. That and the fact that his ground game, take down and grappling defense included, needs a ton of work if he’s still hoping to be the UFC’s youngest champion.
In Mike Perry’s case he had to learn the hard way that talking trash does little in the way of winning fights. The reality is that Perry’s aggressive come forward style has the potential to be exciting but will ultimately become a double edged sword. At this point of the game you coming forward, tucking your chin, and throwing bombs does not an elite fighter make. Perry had flashes of success but his inability to adapt and change his game plan proved to be his undoing. Jouban showed that he was willing to make improvements in his own game in between camps and during the fight itself. If Perry hopes to become elite then he’ll have to be willing to change his approach and avoid his usual emotional style in order to elevate his game. If he’s able to reign in his ego, Perry truly can become a force in the UFC.
The third humble pie recipient was Paige Vanzant who has little time to show any improvements in her game outside of her footwork. Vanzant had great movement while the fight lasted on the feet, but it still was done with little purpose with no set ups for potential angles. Waterson herself showed just how dangerous she has become since her last fight inside the octagon. The head and arm throw which so rarely works in MMA was performed with such technique and power it showcased just how advanced Waterson’s game is becoming. While Vanzant will once again be forced to reevaluate, Waterson will see her star rise as her rear naked choke victory sets her up as another potential challenger for the strawweight strap.
