At 58, Is Mike Tyson Too Old? Iron Mike Confident Despite Age Difference with Jake Paul

Despite giving up a 31-year advantage to his opponent, Mike Tyson is feeling good about his chances against YouTube star Jake Paul.

Nearly 20 years removed from his last professional boxing bout, the ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ will return to the ring for a showdown with ‘The Problem Child’ inside the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The full card — including a highly anticipate rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano — will air live on Netflix on Friday, November 15 to the streaming giants’ 280 million subscribers around the world.

Much of the hype, or if we’re being honest, tension surrounding the fight has focused on the insane age gap between the two combatants. Tyson will be 58 years old when he enters the ring while Paul is still a few years away from turning 30.

But despite that significant difference, Tyson is feeling quite confident in his ability to go toe-to-toe with Paul, though he did admit that sparring early on was quite the challenge — especially when paired with people who could emulate Paul’s stamina.

“Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, I boxed eight rounds,” Tyson told Manouk Akopyan while discussing his training. “I’m sparring young guys, 30, 27 years old, and they’re hitting me hard. It wasn’t a picnic when I first started training. They gave me a real shellacking at first.”

Mike Tyson

The last time Tyson competed in a professional boxing match was in June 2005 when he suffered a sixth-round TKO loss against Kevin McBride. Asked how he believes he has improved despite now being 20 years older, Tyson said:

“I was a different person then. I was, you know, into narcotics and alcohol. I’m not that person anymore. I see a better picture of myself now. I see light, I see the world from a different perspective.”

He continued, “Time changes, man. I was a different person back then, doing different things. It’s time for me to come back. The world’s been anticipating my comeback since the Roy Jones Jr. exhibition. They just gave me the opportunity, and, I don’t know, I wanted to do it again.”

Mike Tyson Appreciates Your Concern, but it won’t change anything

In 2020, Tyson returned to the ring for an exhibition boxing match with Jones Jr. inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Tyson and RJJ fought to an eight-round draw that night, but of course, an exhibition bout is far different than a fight that goes on your permanent record.

Even with some slight rule changes — including two-minute rounds instead of three and the use of 14-ounce gloves instead of the more traditional 10-ouncers — pundits are concerned that Tyson could suffer serious damage against Paul, who has proven himself to be quite the heavy-hitter inside the squared circle.

“I don’t know,” Tyson said when asked about the concerns surrounding his return to the ring. “Thank you very much for being concerned, but I’m here.”

Jake Paul Calls Out Canelo Alvarez, Aims to Prove He’s the ‘Face of Boxing’ After Mike Tyson Fight

Jake Paul thinks he’s the new face of professional boxing and he’s ready to prove it against the best of the best.

On Friday, November 15, ‘The Problem Child’ will return to the ring for his 12th career fight and his toughest test to date when he meets former undisputed heavyweight champion and ‘Baddest Man on the Planet,’ Mike Tyson.

Jake Paul

Paul vs. Tyson will emanate from the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and, per multiple reports, is close to selling out. The stacked fight card, which also features the highly anticipated rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, is scheduled to air live on Netflix around the world at no extra charge to the streaming giants’ 280 million active subscribers.

As a result, Paul vs. Tyson is on track to become one of the most-watched combat sports events of all time.

Jake Paul aims to score the ‘biggest upset in the sport of boxing’ against canelo alvarez

That alone is enough for ‘The Problem Child’ to consider himself the new “money magnet” in boxing, but should he get past the 58-year-old icon, he plans on calling out multi-weight world titleholder Canelo Alvarez for a battle over who gets to be boxing’s new figurehead.

“I do [have a callout], it’s Canelo,” Paul replied when O’Malley asked if he had a name in mind. “This moment will prove that I’m the face of boxing, the largest attraction. Me vs Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight — arguably even bigger than me vs. Tyson. It makes so much sense. You know, Canelo is on his way out, he’s going to want a payday, and I want to show the world that all of the shit I’ve been talking about beating Canelo is actually true.”

“I’ll have the biggest upset in the sport of boxing, and we will fight to see who actually is the face of boxing because, after this event, I’m going to claim it. I beat his gate record in Texas; I’m beating the ticket sales. The numbers and the data show it. I have more followers than him, etc. And this is going to be the most watched fight of this century, so I’m going to be the new money magnet” (h/t BJPenn.com).

Paul is currently 10-1 in his boxing career, his lone loss coming against Tommy Fury in February 2023. His wins are mostly comprised of ex-MMA stars such as Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, and Nate Diaz.

His most recent victory came against the BKFC’s ‘King of Violence’ Mike Perry in July. Paul scored a sixth-round TKO against ‘Platinum’ in Tampa, snapping the former UFC fighter’s five-fight unbeaten streak.

PED Questions Arise as Jake Paul Faces Mike Tyson: Mike Perry Adds Fuel to the Fire

Platinum’ Mike Perry would like to know if anyone is being tested ahead of Friday’s clash between Jake Paul and ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson — because he sure wasn’t.

Originally, Tyson and Paul were set to square off on July 20, but a medical emergency forced Tyson to take some time off from training, leading to their fight being moved from the summertime setting to November 15. Perry stepped in to fight Paul on the original date and got dropped three times before suffering a sixth-round TKO against ‘The Problem Child’ in Tampa.

Mike Perry

Now, Paul is moving up to heavyweight for his highest-profile fight yet, but the only thing on Perry’s mind is whether or not the YouTuber or his opponent will undergo pre-fight drug screens.

“Well, I know he cut to 200 when he fought me, but I thought he was cutting from, like, 212,” Perry told Sean O’Malley’s coach Tim Welch in a new YouTube video. “You know, when I fought Jake, I was undefeated 6-0 over the last 3 years, and then I fought Jake. It was the first time I hadn’t been drug tested. They tested me for all my fights except for the Jake Paul fight” (h/t MMA Mania).

Mike Perry isn’t making any excuses for his loss to Jake Paul

It certainly sounds like Perry is making an accusation, but even so, ‘Platinum’ is unwilling to use that as an excuse for coming up short against Paul.

Mike Perry

“No excuses,” he added. “I fight, I spar, I train [with] people that are on the juice. But they didn’t test me for a fight of that magnitude, against a fighter as important as Jake Paul is to the system they’ve got set up and going. So I was surprised to not get tested.

“I heard the s—, if he’s on some s—, it’s so good they can’t test for it anyways.”

Mike Tyson illness Died

Iron’ Mike Tyson nearly passed away due to a severe illness in 2024, the very same sickness that forced the former champion boxer out of his fight with Jake Paul.

Mike Tyson Illness

The US-born Mike Tyson is one of the all-time great heavyweight boxers in history. Well known for his punching power he collected various boxing world titles throughout the 80s and 90s. He has not fought professionally since 2005 but did take an exhibition in 2020. More recently, he was supposed to have a fight against Jake Paul earlier in 2024 but had to be postponed to November 15.

‘The Problem Child’ Jake Paul was a popular social media influencer who also competes in professional boxing. He is best known for defeating former UFC fighters in the ring but has struggled against career boxers. When Tyson dropped out due to illness, Paul instead faced former UFC fighter ‘Platinum’ Mike Perry.

In a recent interview, ‘Iron’ Mike explained just how sick he truly was. He explained:

“I went to the bathroom and I threw up blood. The next thing I know I’m on the floor. I was defecating tar. I asked the doctor, ‘Am I going to die?’ And she didn’t say no. She said we have options, though. That’s when I got nervous.” [Ht Middleeasy]

Instead of earlier this year, Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will meet at the AT&T Stadium in Texas, USA on November 15 and can be watched live on Netflix. Fans are hoping to see the 58-year-old Tyson turn back the clock and still have the power that made him so feared.
