Miranda Maverick slid into Jamey-Lyn Horth’s DMs.

No, not like that.

Sitting on a three-fight win streak, Maverick returns to the Octagon on December 14 as part of the UFC’s final event of 2024 in Tampa, Florida. Originally, she was set to square off with Tracy Cortez, but after Cortez bowed out of the bout due to injury, Horth agreed to step in.

During a recent interview with Fanatics View, Horth revealed that while she was digging through her mound of message requests online, she came across one that was from Maverick.

“She reached out to me through my DMs in the folder you don’t usually see,” Horth said. “I go through there sometimes and find nice, strange, or funny messages. I was surprised to see her message. She was very polite and thanked me for taking the fight, saying I seemed like a cool person. I replied, ‘Yeah, let’s go, let’s put on a show.’

“I was glad she didn’t trash talk since I’m not much of a trash talker, though I’m always up for exchanging some words. I’m excited to face her and meet the person behind the message.”

Jamey-Lyn Horth faces Miranda Maverick 6 weeks removed from her latest Octagon Appearance

After winning five straight on the regional scene, Horth kept her unbeaten streak alive in her UFC debut last year, scoring a unanimous decision victory over Hailey Cowan. Eight months later, she suffered her first professional loss, coming up on the wrong side of a split decision against Veronica Hardy.

She’s since bounced back with a split-decision win against Ivana Petrovi? in November. Little more than a month later, she’ll try to bag the biggest win of her career against a 20-fight veteran who has already shared the Octagon with a slew of noteworthy names like Gillian Robertson, Maycee Barber, Erin Blanchfield, and Jasmine Jasudavicius.

Kayla Harrison Doesn't Need Good Striking to Beat Julianna Pena, Guarantees UFC Fighter

Miranda Maverick thinks Kayla Harrison will dethrone Julianna Pena, even with subpar striking.

Over the years, Harrison has become one of the most dominant female fighters in MMA history, winning back-to-back PFL championships and dominating in her first two appearances under the UFC banner. Now, Harrison finds herself as the No. 2 ranked contender in the bantamweight division and is likely the next woman in line to challenge reigning 135-pound queen Julianna Pena.

‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ reclaimed the title in October via a split decision victory over Raquel Pennington at UFC 307.

Maverick claims Kayla Harrison’s victory over Pena is ‘guaranteed’

Aside from Larissa Pacheco, Pena could very well be the best striker Harrison has ever faced, but according to Maverick, none of that will matter once it’s time for the two to step inside the Octagon.

“I think Kayla will win,” Maverick told Inside Fighting. “I think her striking is, uh, not very good and hasn’t seemed to improve very much over time, but I think she’ll win regardless. I think she’ll get it to the ground, and Pena won’t be getting back up. Um, and yeah, Pena will lose her title if she goes against Kayla. Guaranteed.”

No official announcements have been made regarding their potential showdown, but considering Pena has only competed three times since 2021, we could be waiting a while.

Pena is 8-3 in the UFC with her losses coming against former champions Valentina Shevchenko, Germain de Randamie, and Amanda Nunes.

Harrison is 18-1 in her MMA career, her only loss coming against Pacheco at the 2022 PFL World Championship. The following year, Harrison bounced back with a dominant win over Aspen Ladd before exiting the promotion and signing with the UFC. In 2024, she earned wins over Holly Holm and Ketlen Vieira.

“Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication with me fighting Dec 14th in Tampa, as I informed the UFC weeks ago that I wont be able to fight in December due to health issues that requires me to have surgery,” Cortez wrote on X. “I look forward to getting back in the cage early next year! Thank you to everyone who has reached out.”

This is the second time that Cortez’s fight with Maverick has been scrapped, the first coming in July when Cortez was instead rebooked to fight former two-time strawweight champion ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas a week earlier. Cortez came up short that night and was looking to bounce back against Maverick after suffering her second career loss.

With Tracy Cortez’s Withdrawal, Miranda Maverick will now fight jamey-lyn Horth

"Tracy Cortez Withdraws from UFC Tampa Due to Injury; Maverick Remains on December 14 Card

Tracy Cortez’s scheduled scrap with Miranda Maverick has once again been scrapped.

Cortez and Maverick were first scheduled to square off on July 20, but after that fight fell through, Cortez was slotted into a scrap with ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas one week earlier. Cortez came up short that night and was plotting to bounce back against Maverick in a rescheduled scrap at UFC Tampa on December 14.

Unfortunately, that fight is no longer on the docket after multiple people close to the situation confirmed that Cortez has withdrawn from the contest due to an undisclosed injury. MMA Junkie was the first to report the change.

Miranda Maverick

Miranda Maverick walked out of the Delta Center in Salt Lake City with an impressive victory, but it didn’t come without a heaping dose of frustration as her opponent, Priscila Cachoeira, seemingly attempted every dirty tactic in the book to avoid taking a loss.

On Saturday night, Miranda Maverick scored a third-round submission by way of armbar against the Brazilian standout, but along the way, Cachoeira was guilty of multiple fouls, including some fairly egregious fence grabs. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the worst. In the third round, Maverick dragged Cachoeira to the mat and immediately moved into side control. As she begins to reign down elbows on her opponent, Cachoeira can be seen pulling the top of Maverick in an attempt to expose her breasts and stop the onslaught of strikes.

Following the event, Miranda Maverick suggested that the clearly intentional attempt to manufacture a wardrobe malfunction should have resulted in a point deduction. Maverick also accused Cachoeira of intentionally keeping her fingers straight throughout most of the contest.

“At some point, you gotta say it’s a point [deduction],” Maverick said during her appearance at the post-event press conference. “She stuck her fingers up straight the entire fight pretty much and there was no chance she was just trying to push me off. There was no flat hands. I had warned the ref beforehand and to be honest, he did about as good of a job as I’ve seen any ref do. I said ‘Listen, I don’t want poked in the eyes in this fight.’ That was my main priority and he was like, ‘Alright, we’ll watch out for it.’

“You know, I hope the whole world didn’t see me, but they probably did,” Maverick said while gesturing to her chest. “I guess that’s part of the risk of fighting, but it’s very frustrating and it made me go in there that much angrier every round.”

Cachoeira Tries Cheap Tap Out Trick to Get Out of Miranda Maverick’s Submission Attempt

Priscila Cachoeira wasn’t quite done pulling out tricks from up her sleeve. Just past the two-minute mark of the third round, Miranda Maverick was able to snatch Cachoeira’s arm and lock in an armbar. Cachoeira attempted what is commonly referred to as a ‘Brazilian tap.’ That is where a fighter taps once in the hope that their opponent will loosen the hold. Fortunately, Maverick didn’t fall for it and continued to put on the pressure until Cachoeira had no choice, but to legitimately tap out.

Sadly, this is not the first time that Priscila Cachoeira has been observed blatantly attempting to skirt the rules while on the losing side of things. At UFC 269, Cachoeira was forced to tap out to a rear-naked choke during her bout with Gillian Robertson. But before submitting, Cachoeira attempted to jam her thumb into Robertson’s eye socket in hopes of breaking the hold.

Whether or not Cachoeira deserves to be dubbed the dirtiest fighter in the game is subjective, but there are an ample amount of examples to at least earn her a nomination. But as former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz once said “If you ain’t cheatin’, you’re not trying.”

Miranda Maverick moved to 5-3 under the UFC banner on Saturday night, winning three of her last four bouts inside the Octagon. She improved to 12-5 overall in her MMA career.
