Frank Mir delivered a brutal knee to the head of Mirko Cro Cop late in the third round of their main event fight Saturday at UFC 119, winning by knockout to put an exclamation point on a fight that had been dull for the 14 minutes of action — or inaction — up to that point.

Cro Cop didn’t appear to be seriously hurt and quickly got up after the knockout, but he had been knocked so senseless that he approached Mir afterward to ask him what happened. Contrary to the conventional wisdom before the fight that Mir would have to use his superior grappling to beat a better striker like Cro Cop, Mir managed to win the fight without ever going to the ground.

“I just pulled a victory over Mirko with no jiu jitsu,” Mir said.

Is UFC 119 the End for Mirko Cro Cop?

Mirko Cro CopINDIANAPOLIS — Mirko Cro Cop wasn’t planning on fighting anytime soon until the emergency phone rang. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira was out of UFC 119 and they needed him. Cro Cop of course said yes. One legend out, another in.

Cro Cop said no debate was necessary. After all, he’s a fighter. It’s in his blood. He loves to fight, to compete, to test himself. But before agreeing, Team Cro Cop asked the UFC to do him a favor in return; if he lost, they could not cut him from his newly extended contract. The deal was made, and Cro Cop competed against Frank Mir, ultimately getting knocked out in the third round.

Over his last 10 fights, the Croatian striker has five wins, four losses and one no contest. He’s been knocked unconscious twice. And his best win has come against a relative MMA neophyte, Pat Barry. And so with all this, perhaps it’s time to ask a sad but relevant question: Is it time for Cro Cop to call it quits?

UFC 119 Aftermath: We’re Only Still Talking About It Because It’s Our Job

There were times during UFC 119 when it felt like everyone involved spent Saturday afternoon chugging tons of codeine cough syrup. Everybody looked just a little slow, a little out of it. It sure didn’t help that the two main eventers were totally sleepwalking during the first 14 minutes of their fight before Mirko CroCop ended things with his vicious head butt to Frank Mir’s knee. The “co-main event” was also entirely forgettable, as Ryan Bader outpointed Roger Nog to reportedly win the Jon Jones Sweepstakes. Guess we’ll have to check in with him in six months, find out how that worked out for him …

This was not, by any stretch of the imagination, a great effort from the world’s largest MMA promotion. It also wasn’t quite as bad as a lot of people are saying. We’re not talking “worst show of all time” territory here. Credit local boys Matt Mitrione, Sean McCorkle and Chris Lytle for salvaging what they could of the day. Also, Evan Dunham and Sean Sherk’s back-and-forth battle was by turns exciting and totally bizarre. Too bad it was marred by a shaky judges’ decision. And hey, the good news is, if you liked UFC 119 you’re gonna love Oct. 16’s UFC 120, which looks just as terrible on paper but at least airs for free on SpikeTV.

Frank MirINDIANAPOLIS – Frank Mir walked into the UFC 119 post-fight press conference and sat down, leaning back in his chair. His body language told the story of dejection, an emotion at odds with the truth of what had just happened.

Rebounding into the win column six months after his interim title fight loss to Shane Carwin, Mir knocked out PRIDE legend Mirko Cro Cop late in the third round of their main event fight before 15,811 fans at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Despite the win, Mir voiced disappointment at his performance.

“No disrespect, it was a pretty s—– performance as far as I wanted to push the pace more,” Mir said. “While he’s swinging punches at you, it’s not as easy. He caught my attention with his velocity. He did some different things. Exiting out to my left threw me. As far as striking, I could have gotten more busy. And pushing him against the cage, I drilled so much but I made mistakes that I wasn’t making like lifting my arm up and exposing my ribcage. I think I had too much time to think and I had to clear my mind. But then again, without a single takedown, I was able to stand up with Mirko for two and a half rounds and win by KO.”

Look, we’ve been trying to think of a good way to tell you this. In the end, maybe it’s best if we just come right out and say it: UFC 119 isn’t a great PPV card. Your main event features two guys just trying to cling to life in the heavyweight division, while the rest of the card is kind of … meh. Not saying it’s terrible, but if you wanted to save your money for, say, UFC 121 and just follow the live blog for this baby, we’d understand. We got you, player. That’s what we’re here for. And if you’re some big swinging dick who has money out the yaz (even in these tough economic times) and you’re ordering the thing, but for some reason still feel compelled to follow along online – maybe as a respite from how empty and shallow your life really is, maybe just to toss out sweet zingers in the comments section — that’s fine too. We don’t discriminate. Except against fat people. And the old.

We’ll be going live just after 10 p.m. EST, 7 p.m. PST. Remember to hit refresh early and often to get the latest updates.
