An MMA fighter has received a jail sentence following his deportation from Russia back to Tajikistan last December in the wake of statements he made on social media.

27-year old MMA fighter Chorshanbe Chorshanbiev has officially received a jail sentence of 8 years in his home country of Tajikistan. The sentence was issued on the grounds of Chorshanbiev “inciting ethnic, racial or religious hatred,” and allegedly issuing “public calls for violent change of the constitutional order.”

Chorshanbiev is a native of Tajikistan but identifies as Pamiri, which is an ethnic and religious minority that populates the Gorno-Badakhshan region of the country. The MMA fighter originally made headlines regarding this distinction in January 2020 when he took issue with comments by Russian fighter Nikita Solonin that referred to him as a “Tajik fighter.”

While Chorshanbiev eventually apologized for his response to Solonin, he later attracted the attention of the Tajik government with his social media activity. After a resident of the Gorno-Badakhshan region was shot and killed by a police officer, the Pamiri fighter posted a video speaking out against the incident.

“I urge you to stand up against injustice and against the unjust death of innocent people.”

The lightweight and welterweight fighter had spent the entirety of his MMA career competing in Russia but was arrested for speeding in December 2021 and deported back to Tajikistan shortly thereafter. Chorshanbiev was taken into custody after arriving in Tajikistan for his “provocative” statements on social media and was expected to face up to 15 years in prison.

Chorshanbiev’s jail sentence comes despite the testimony of Yelizaveta Koltunova, a linguistics expert from the Institute of Linguistics and Journalism in Nizhny Novgorod. Koltunova disputed any provocative intent on the part of Chorsanbiev after reviewing the video.

The video was absent of “any psychosocial or linguistic elements of calls for violence, including disruption of the foundations of the society and state,” according to Koltunova.

Following this testimony, the Tajik court requested another linguistic examination of Chorshanbiev’s statements prior to his eventual sentencing to 8 years in jail.

The 27-year old Chorshanbiev most recently competed in MMA at Fight Nights Global 97 in September 2020. He picked up a unanimous decision victory over Radomir Filippov, which brought his professional record to 6-3-1.

Former MMA fighter Gary Bligh has been sentenced to almost four years in jail stemming from a September 2020 arrest in his home country of Ireland.

Last week, the 34-year-old Bligh was handed a sentence of 47 months following his 2020 arrest for possession of three semi-automatic handguns, all of which were fully loaded.

After receiving notice that weapons were being moved between gangs from Dublin to Roscommon, Irish law enforcement apprehended Bligh on a Roscommon street the night of September 30th, 2020. They subsequently discovered the three firearms in Bligh’s possession, and follow-up searches by police at a Roscommon location connected to the gang activity also revealed a small quantity of heroin.

Not considered to be a central figure of the gang, the former MMA fighter’s involvement is believed to be related to a drug debt. Bligh indicated to Irish law enforcement that he hadn’t looked inside the bag he’d been given and thought it only contained sleeping tablets, but a judge found this claim to be unlikely given the weight of the bag.

Convicted Irish gangster John Gilligan is suspected to have arranged the transport of the firearms from Spain to Ireland. The 68-year-old previously served 17 years in jail for his involvement in a drug-trafficking operation, which came after his acquittal in connection to the murder of Irish journalist Veronica Guerin in 2001. Gilligan was arrested in Spain on drug and firearms charges just weeks after Bligh’s arrest but was released on bail in December 2020.

Bligh previously competed in two amateur MMA bouts in 2014, losing both of those fights by submission.

While Bligh hasn’t competed in MMA since 2014, this is the second time in less than a month an MMA fighter has made headlines in connection to an Irish crime boss. UFC fighter Mournir Lazzez thanked wanted criminal Daniel Kinahan in a controversial post-fight interview following Lazzez’s win over Ange Loosa at UFC Vegas 51 last month.

Former Bellator fighter “Baby” Joe Taimanglo was warned by a judge this week after submitting a positive drug test to Adult Probation Services in his native Guam.

The 37-year-old Taimanglo was originally arrested in October 2020. Law enforcement in Guam noticed expired plates on the scooter the former Bellator fighter was driving and stopped “Baby Joe.”

Officers found a glass pipe and loaded pistol in a compartment on the scooter. Taimanglo did not have a firearm ID for the pistol, and officers also found a small bag containing methamphetamine in a fanny pack.

In 2021, Taimanglo failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing related to his charges. No warrant was issued for his arrest, and the hearing was rescheduled for a later date. He remains free following this recent failed drug test, but the court has indicated he’ll be put in jail should he fail to remain clean. The former Bellator fighter is due back in court on June 24 to see where his case will go next.

While he’s far from the only current or former MMA fighter to run into legal troubles, Taimanglo is a fairly high-profile example considering his success as a fighter. The Guamanian compiled a 24-9-1 record in an MMA career that started in 2004 and ended in 2018.

Known during his fighting career as “Baby Joe the Juggernaut,” Taimanglo is best known for his time in Bellator from 2013-2018. He went 7-4 fighting for the promotion, initially competing at featherweight before dropping to bantamweight.

His back-to-back main event fights with Darrion Caldwell stand out as a high point in his career; Taimanglo submitted the future Bellator champion in their first bout but lost a decision in the rematch. “Baby Joe” ended his Bellator run with a win over former bantamweight champion Joe Warren in 2018 before officially wrapping his career later that year following a decision loss at WFCA 54.

Russian MMA fighter Vladimir Mineev will honor the memory of his fallen brother when he makes the walk for his next fight.

Serving as a private in the Russian Air Force when the current war in Ukraine began, Mineev’s brother Pyotr was killed in action along with Sergeant Ilnur Sibgatullin.

Mineev is next scheduled to compete in a boxing match against Timur Nikulin, which will take place in Moscow on June 12 under the Derzhava promotional brand. The 32-year-old Mineev previously competed as a kickboxer before making his MMA debut in 2014 for Russian promotion Fight Nights Global, now called AMC Fight Nights.

Speaking with Russian media outlet Tass.ru, Mineev stated “This is an opportunity to honor the memory of my brother, who died in the first days of the special operation. I will go out in a T-shirt with the image of my brother, in a beret.”

The current war in Ukraine has been ongoing since Russian troops invaded the country on February 24. Russian forces had previously invaded Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in February 2014, which led to Russia’s eventual annexation of the territory. The conflict has resulted in significant losses on both sides, with civilian casualties in Ukraine being a particular point of international concern.

The reigning AMC Fight Nights middleweight champion Vladimir Mineev most recently fought in 2021 against Magomed Ismailov. Mineev stopped Imsailov with strikes in the third round, successfully making the first defense of the middleweight title he claimed in 2020 against Dauren Ermekov. The Russian fighter has compiled a record of 16-1-1 with 14 wins by stoppage since making his MMA debut in 2014.

This is just the latest example of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine overlapping with the world of combat sports. Former heavyweight boxing champions Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko have both taken up arms to defend their country. Bellator welterweight champion Yaroslav Amosov has been actively documenting his own efforts during the invasion, including the recent recovery of his championship belt.

What do you think about Vladimir Mineev’s plan to honor his brother?

Middleweight MMA fighter Joel Bauman went through more pre-fight battles ahead of Fury FC 61 than most realized.

The 30-year-old Bauman earned a TKO win over Reese Forest to kick off the main card at Fury FC 61. He got back in the win column following a second-round loss to Josh Fremd at FAC 12, and before that, a no-contest due to an accidental groin strike against Edmilson Freitas at Fury FC 54.

Post-fight interviews are utilized to give the fighters a chance to reflect on their performances, while also giving them a chance to bask in the moment of victory. But, Bauman’s cage interview took an odd turn, when he admitted to having a sexually-transmitted infection.

“Last fight, I was tired, I was exhausted,” Bauman said. “I’m about to launch this NFT that’s going to change the fight game. And I put in 30 all-nighters before that fight, I had herpes before that fight, two outbreaks in the span of a week. I’m here, I’m healthy, let’s go, whatever. It doesn’t matter.”

It’s unclear when Bauman was diagnosed with herpes ahead of his fight with Forest.

Bauman’s post-fight interview has accumulated nearly 1 million views on social media. After seeing the clip, Bauman’s last opponent Fremd weighed in.

“I would comment on this bc I’m the guy who fought him last, but ya know I think he’s talked enough,” Fremd said of Bauman. “This shit is now viral in more ways than 1.”

Bauman’s post-fight interview is far from the first time a fighter has raised eyebrows on the mic, but it may be near the top of the list of the strangest post-fight moments in recent memory.

An Irish MMA fighter has been denied almost $75,000 in damages after he was found to have won two fights following his road injury claim.

Wayne Tansey, a 37-year-old featherweight fighting out of Dublin, claimed to have been injured in a 2014 road accident caused by an 87-year-old driver. But his case fell apart in an Irish court after a cross examination revealed that Tansey had claimed back-to-back victories just months after the accident.

“Do you know a Ciaron Stapleton?” defense attorney Michael Murray asked Tansey. “Yes, and you fought him in December in an MMA cage and beat him at a time when boxers were allowed to knee each other.”

Wayne Tansey

Murray revealed to the court that a private investigator had sniffed out that Tansey, despite allegedly suffering grave injuries, not only got the w against Stapleton, but after a quick turnaround, went on to claim a second successive victory in February 2015.

“Now, eight years later you are telling this court that the road traffic collision you were involved in still causes you pain,” continued Murray. “Are you taking us for mugs here?”

Judge O’Donohue subsequently dismissed Tansey’s case and ordered him to leave the court immediately. A woman who accompanied Tansey to the court hearing was also thrown out.

Given that the judge had earlier heard that Tansey was quick to temper and had a prior conviction for assault, he asked his legal team to ensure the 37-year-old made his way completely outside the court premises.

“I want them on the street,” ordered Judge O’Donohue.
