A light heavyweight match between former UFC champ Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida (19-3) and Phil ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Davis (11-1) appears to be in the works for this summer’s upcoming UFC 163 event in Brazil.

News of the matchup comes via Portal do Vale Tudo and was confirmed as a fight the top promotion by is working on by MMAFighting.com.

UFC 163: Aldo vs. Pettis is expected to take place on August 3, 2013 at the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The event will see UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo defend his title against former WEC lightweight title holder Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis.

Machida is 3-1 in his last four matches and is coming off a split decision victory over Dan Henderson last February at UFC 157. That bout was a No. 1 contender match but with champ Jon Jones injured, and leaning towards a fight with Alexander Gustafsson, Machida apparently wants to stay busy by taking the match with Davis.

Davis has won two in-a-row and is 2-1 (1NC) in his last four matches. ‘Mr. Wonderful’ fought last April in New Jersey, defeating opponent Vinny Magalhães by decision in the match. The other victory was a back-to-back rematch versus Wagner Prado after their first match ended in a “No Contest” after an accidental eye poke by Davis at UFC on FOX 4. The rematch took place at UFC 153 and ended in a submission victory after a second round anaconda choke.

Former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight contender Chael Sonnen (27-13-1) is looking to replace an injured Antônio Rogério Nogueira at this months UFC 161 event.

News of Nogueira’s withdrawal from the Canadian event broke Sunday with the Brazilian forced off the pay-per-view card due to a back injury.

Sonnen was quick to throw his name in the mix as a replacement for the event calling out ‘Lil Nog’s’ opponent Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua via Twitter.

@ShogunRua I HEAR BRAZILIAN CHICKEN IS OFF THE MENU. AMERICAN GANGSTER IS STILL AVAILABLE IF YOU WANT TO SEND YOUR WAITRESS OVER.

With less than two weeks to go before UFC 161 the top promotion has little time left to find a viable replacement and the inclusion of Sonnen on the card would certainly boost pay-per-view numbers.

Having already lost the main event due to injury, an interim bantamweight title fight between Renan Barão and Eddie Wineland, this would certainly be a fun fight for fans.

UFC 161: Evans vs. Henderson is expected to take place on June 14, 2013 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
