medicalsuspensions8dFollowing the scandal of UFC 117 with main event title challenger Chael Sonnen testing positive for steroids, there was a silent sigh of relief as post-fight drug tests from last months UFC 119 event came back clean. The results were released on Tuesday by the Indiana Gaming Commission.

A total of nine fighters were tested for banned substances following the Sept. 25 event at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Seven of the nine fighters tested came from UFC 119’s main pay-per-view portion of the card: Main-even heavyweights Frank Mir and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic; co-main event light heavyweights Ryan Bader and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira; and Chris Lytle, former lightweight champion Sean Sherk and Melvin Guillard. From the preliminary card, C.B. Dollaway and Matt Mitrione were each tested.

Sonnen’s failed drug test has earned the fighter a one year suspensions from the California State Athletic Commission, as well as a $2,500 fine.

The California State Athletic Commission released the fighter medical suspensions from this past Saturday’s Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II event. MMAWeekly.com received word on Monday and receiving the longest suspensions were KJ Noons, Josh Thomson and his opponent Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante, who all received 180 day sentences.

Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Noons II took place on Oct. 9th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. and was broadcast on Showtime.

The full medical suspensions are as follows:

-Nick Diaz was suspended for 60 days with no contact for 60 days due to multiple facial lacerations.

-K.J. Noons was suspended for 180 days with no contact for 180 days due to a left thumb fracture and a left mandible fracture that needs clearance.

-Josh Thomson was suspended for 180 days with no contact for 180 days for possible right hand fracture and left knee injury unless cleared by a physician. He was also suspended for 60 days with no contact for 60 days due to left and right head lacerations unless cleared by a physician.

-Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante was suspended for 180 days with no contact for 180 days due to possible rotator cuff tear unless cleared by orthopedic doctor.

-Andre Galvao was suspended for 45 days with no contact for 30 days due to being knocked out.

-David Marshall was suspended for 60 days with no contact for 60 days for two facial lacerations unless cleared by a physician.

-Luis Mendoza was suspended for 45 days with no contact for 30 days due to a hard bout.

The first features the Strikeforce welterweight belt with champion Nick Diaz taking on challenger KJ Noons. While the co-main event features women’s 115 lb champion Sarah Kaufman, who faces Dutch fighter Marloes Coenen.

The weigh-in’s will begin at approximately 7PM EST (4PM PST).
