CSAC Says Chael Sonnen Tests Positive For Performance Enhancing Drugs At UFC 117

The California State Athletic Commission has informed Chael Sonnen that he flunked his PED test for UFC 117 according to Sherdog. Wow. The California State Athletic Commission has informed Chael Sonnen that he flunked his PED test for UFC 117 according to Sherdog. Wow. This is a huge blow to Sonnen who will certainly lack any credibility if he doesn’t find a way to rebuke these allegations. A suspension is usually in order, along with a career long stigma for failing the post fight drug test, and that would certainly put the future Anderson Silva rematch on hold.

The MMA News has tried to connect with Sonnen for comment, but he could not be reached. We’ll update this story as word gets out.

Bibiano Fernandes Will Only Fight In Japan, Not Interested In Anywhere Else.

Dream featherweight champion, Bibiano Fernandes is thought by many to be the number one featherweight in the world, and his current seven fight win streak is certainly impressive. Dream has been the fighters home, but after a recent “money” issue in which Dream took some extra time to pay what the fighter was promised, many have wondered if the jiu-jitsu wonder would join the ranks of WEC in North America. The answer, at this time seems to be no, as he seems content to fight in Japan. Here’s the blurb via Tatame:

Well, man… I’ll be pretty honest with you: If someday I stop fighting in Japan, I won’t fight anywhere else because I’m not interested. My plan is Jiu-Jitsu, I love Jiu-Jitsu. Whatever I can do in order to help Jiu-Jitsu, I will. Dream is an excellent event, but is going through a difficult situation, I don’t really know what is going on. Whoever fought in Japan know what it feels like… The fans respect you there. I hope that, someday, Dream or other event may go though it and find a way out of this because it’s a good event, it’s beautiful and the Japaneses, for their own formation, need an event like Dream there. Before there wasn’t this problem, but I hope they really find a way out of this and that everything works out just fine for them.

Fernandes is a great representative for the sport and it would be fantastic to see him fighting in North America. A rematch against Urijah Faber would only be the first of many matchups but it seem’s pretty cut and dried that Japan is where the brazillian likes to fight.

Seems like the eye injury suffered by UFC 119 main eventer Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic may not be as simple as was first made out. An injury was suffered via eye poke, and Fighter’s Only had the information we were all looking for:

“It was the very last minute of the very last round of the very last sparring,” CroCop told Fighters Only staff writer John Joe O’Regan today. “We were sparring in UFC gloves and my sparring partner – who is about 120 kilos, Croatia’s best thai boxer – he poked me in the eye. The pain was like… I cant even describe it, the pain was so big I thought he had blinded me. I went to see a doctor and he advised that the eye should be rested minimum two weeks. But I have made a commitment to the UFC and a commitment to the fans, so there is no question of backing out of the fight. I do not want to let anyone down, I know they could not find a replacement for me at this short notice and many fans have already bought tickets for the show.”

Did anyone else notice that Cro Cop’s doctor suggested two weeks but he’s giving it only one week..while seeing Cop in action is amazing it would be a shame if he got hurt as a result of the damage he suffered before the fight. You can’t say enough good things about his heart though. UFC 119 is set for September 25.

The MMA Hour – Episode No. 51 Featuring Phil Baroni, Josh Barnett, Nate Marquardt, Cole Miller and Vitor Belfort

Good show, and you got to give heavyweight fighter Josh Barnett some serious comedy props as he hits the line comparing the Strikeforce heavyweights to their UFC counterparts:
” I’d say it’s a super incredible division. If you take our top four, five guys, and their top four, five guys in the UFC, hell, […]

” I’d say it’s a super incredible division. If you take our top four, five guys, and their top four, five guys in the UFC, hell, we have more wins then they even have fights”.

Funny stuff that.

Vitor Belfort “Anderson [Silva] Knows That If My Hands Hit Him, He Will Not Be Able To Stand On His Feet.”

Before UFC middleweight number one contender Chael Sonnen came along and shocked the MMA world with his powerful but losing effort against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva there was only one person that fans thought had a legitimate chance of dethroning Silva: Vitor Belfort. Belfort has shown an unbelievable KO ability along with a solid ground game and hand speed seldom seen in the Octagon, but he’s still a few fights away from facing the champ. Still, he’s quick to answer the question of how he’d do in the fight:(via Sherdog):

“If I hit him like Demian and Sonnen did, it’s going to be different because I have much more firepower…Still, a fight is a fight, and we know we’re two well-conditioned champions. The most important thing is to be well-trained and focused on each second of that fight. I know Anderson knows that if my hands hit him, he will not be able to stand on his feet…No matter who’s on the other side of the cage, whether it’s Anderson or someone else, I’m going forward. If you look at my last fights, you’re going to see how focused I am. I know what I want. I have no doubt about what I want or what I’m able to do, so I’m very motivated.”
