Shane Carwin may have been defeated last night when he took on UFC champion Brock Lesnar but he certainly gained even more respect from the MMA community. Carwin can certainly punch with more power than almost any other heavyweight but his cardio certainly came up short. Carwin, however, disagrees and let fans know that his cardio was fine but that it was cramps that caused him major problems(via his website):
The game plan last night was to be patient and let the fight come to you. When I had him in trouble the ref keep saying he was going to stop it and then towards the end of the 1st my body began to seize up. In between rounds I could not move my legs and had what felt like a whole body cramp. My cardio was fine but my body was not. What can you do? You have to stand up and face your opponent.
Heading into the second I knew I need to finish the fight or I was going to be in trouble. Much like the Champion he is I am sure Brock was thinking the same thing. I had zero take down defense as my legs were dead to me and the rest is as they say history.
Carwin has been gracious in his previous victories and he was no different in defeat, acknowledging that Lesnar fought like a warrior. Lesnar is slated to fight Cain Velasquez, and it’s too soon to guess on Carwin’s next opponent, but expect to see Carwin in the heavyweight title hunt shortly.

Gray Maynard will put his seven fight win streak on the line at UFC 118: Edgar Vs. Penn 2 when he takes on top lightweight contender Kenny “Kenflo” Florian but he seems to be thinking about current UFC champion Frankie Edgar. Edgar shocked the MMA world when he took the lightweight title from BJ Penn but Maynard still remembers beating him via decision. If Maynard can get a win over Florian it’s pretty clear that he would be next in line for a title shot. We’ll find out on August 28.
If your evening last night didn’t consist of watching UFC 116 somewhere, somehow, but not necessarily with someone, then you effed up big time. If your evening last night didn’t consist of watching UFC 116 somewhere, somehow, but not necessarily with someone, then you effed up big time. Yes, we say things like this a lot, but in this case…dude…the card was gold. It’s not always certain that a highly anticipated championship fight lives up to the hype, but as we all hoped, Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin both delivered. Now if you still haven’t seen the fight run along and rectify….
Of course, the reason last night’s main event tilt can now be labelled with the ‘where were you when’ tag, is because Lesnar came back from quite the ass whooping in round one, to tap out Carwin with a second round arm-triangle-choke (if you predicted that finish then you are a god amongst men). While Lesnar’s comeback was nothing short of spectacular, it’s likely some people were miffed that the fight wasn’t stopped in round one, when Carwin was throwing down punch after punch. Speaking after the fight, Lesnar had this to say about referee Josh Rosenthal’s decision, not to intervene (thanks to MMA Junkie for the quote).
“I really have to thank the referee for allowing that thing go on,” Lesnar said. “I wasn’t hurt. I thought if I just kept moving – I could feel Shane’s punches slowly becoming less and less. I thought, ‘If I get out of here, then I’m going to exert a bunch of energy.’…”I realized there was a short time left, and I just tried to stay busy.”
It may not have looked pretty, but really, Lesnar did appear to be okay. Time to move on right Cain?
Lemoore, Calif. – John Alessio didn’t stress too much over his opponent change for Friday, July 9’s Tachi Palace Fights “Stars and Strikes” mixed martial arts show at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.

Lemoore, Calif. – John Alessio didn’t stress too much over his opponent change for Friday, July 9’s Tachi Palace Fights “Stars and Strikes” mixed martial arts show at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, Calif.
“I definitely want to first just say that I hope (Brad) Blackburn heals up soon and that I was really looking forward to that fight. I’m very happy that Tachi Palace Fights didn’t have me sitting around waiting for an opponent and they didn’t just cut the fight. They had some one right away and I really appreciate that,” said Alessio, who will take on War Machine in the co-main event at the Palace.
War Machine (11-3) will replace Blackburn, who had to withdraw from the bout because of a cut.
“War Machine has a good record at 11-3 and won six of his last seven fights. I will be ready, but I don’t see any problems for me in this fight. I don’t see any aspect of the game that he is better than me at. He is a tough dude and probably come in swinging to take my head off.”
This will be War Machine’s final fight before he is scheduled to spend a year in a San Diego jail, according to his Twitter account. War Machine was a cast member on “The Ultimate Fighter 6″ and previously was known as Jon Koppenhaver before a legal name change.
He was arrested May 30 outside Thruster’s Lounge in San Diego under suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
“I’m glad I got this fight. I need to make some money to leave with my wife while I’m locked up. Took this fight on very short notice, but a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do. Jail is going to suck and be so boring can’t wait to get out and fight again,” said War Machine, who last saw action May 15 when he submitted Zach Light.
“I actually trained with Alessio all last year at Xtreme Couture. He’s a well-seasoned vet, real tough with great skills. We had many good sparring sessions the last year. I remember back when I was a youngster; before I ever started fighting I saw him fight in the UFC. John was young, but did great. I thought wow this dude is going to be good,” War Machine added.
Tickets can be purchased at www.tachipalace.com or charge by phone at 1-800-225-2277. Tickets may also be purchased at the Tachi Palace Gift Shop and start at a low price of just $30 for general admission seating.
If you can’t attend the fights you can watch them live on GoFightLive.tv at 6 p.m. PST. Cost of the stream is just $9.99.
In the main event, “Razor” Rob McCullough returns to his roots at the Palace in a catch weight bout with fast-rising star Isaac DeJesus of Fresno, Calif. DeJesus (9-1). DeJesus is the Tachi Palace Fights Featherweight champ and makes the jump up in weight to take on Huntington Beach, Calif.’s McCullough (17-6) at 160 pounds.
“I see this fight being great. Lots of face punching and submission scrambles. I’m looking for an early KO, so I can grab a beer and get back to eating all the junk food I can find before going away,” War Machine said.
This fight is a lot more pivotal in the career of Alessio (28-13), who carries a 4-fight win streak into the contest.
“I’m more ready than ever to fight. I’ve really worked a lot harder than I ever have this last year and trying to get back to the UFC. I’m putting everything into this and been working so hard,” Alessio said. “This is the type of fight that I feel can really put me back in the UFC.”
The 9-bout card is also packed with three title fights, as welterweight champ David Mitchell (10-0) of Santa Rosa, Calif. defends his belt against Lemoore, Calif.’s Poppies Martinez (18-6) and bantamweight title holder Cole Escovedo (16-4) of Fresno, Calif. defends against Oakdale, Calif.’s Michael McDonald (9-1). Also, Rancho Cucamonga Calif.’s Gabe Ruediger (16-5) and Albuquerque, N.M.’s Lenny Lovato (8-0) battle for the Tachi Palace Fights vacant lightweight strap.
Also, UFC veteran David Kaplan (2-3) of Las Vegas, Nev. takes on Oakland, Calif.’s Dominique Robinson (4-4) in a lightweight tilt; Olympic Silver Medalist Stephen Abas (1-0) of Fresno, Calif. makes his return to the Palace in a bantamweight bout with Lemoore, Calif.’s Joey DeLaCruz (1-0); Las Vegas, Nev. lightweight David Bollea (2-0), who is the nephew of wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan, takes on Visalia, Calif.’s Cody Gibson (3-0); and Coalinga, Calif. bantamweight Francisco Loredo (4-5) fights Soledad, Calif.’s Drew Bittner (3-0).

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has thrown out some his thoughts concerning a rematch between Fabricio Werdum and Fedor Emelianenko, and seems to think that The Last Emperor should maybe face Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem first and then with a victory perhaps take on Fabricio Werdum in a muchly anticipated rematch. MMA fans must be drooling at the idea of Fedor vs. Overeem, as Overeem has long been thought of as a legitimate threat to most top heavyweight fighters, and much more a stylistic nightmare for Fedor. Coker made his thoughts clear with Sherdog:
My feeling is maybe Fedor should fight Alistair Overeem and whoever wins that fight gets to fight Fabricio Werdum. I would love to see that fight too, Alistair and Fedor, I would love to see that fight happen. Here’s the thing, we just saw Fedor fight Werdum; I’m not saying we couldn’t do the rematch [Fedor vs. Werdum] first but I’m saying there are a couple options on the table
Sounds like Coker is doing a great job setting up a potential rematch with Fedor and Werdum, if Fedor can get through Overeem who could give Fedor his second loss in as many fights. When the word comes out, we’ll let you know.
