Molly McCann will be looking to deliver a similar performance to her first London visit this year when she returns to England’s capital on July 23 to face Hannah Goldy.

When a quick turnaround and second trip across the Atlantic was announced by the UFC, many of the names who featured on the last UK-held card were expected to return to The O2 for UFC London 2.0.

Now, joining Tom Aspinall and Muhammad Mokaev, women’s flyweight “Meatball” Molly has become the third of March 19’s victors to be confirmed for the July 23 event. Per the official UFC Europe Twitter handle, McCann will share the Octagon with Vermont native Goldy.

When she makes the walk in front of her raucous home crowd once again, McCann (12-4) will be hoping to make a similar impact to her most recent outing, which saw her brutally knock out Luana Carolina with a spinning back elbow.

Having earned a unanimous decision victory over Ji Yeon Kim prior to her homecoming, the Liverpudlian has emphatically rebounded from her previous two-fight skid with back-to-back bonus-worthy performances.

In her way of a third consecutive triumph will be Goldy (6-2), whose first taste of UFC action came on Dana White’s Contender Series back in 2019. Despite recording a unanimous decision victory, “24K” wasn’t initially offered a contract.

But just two months later, Goldy made her promotional debut against Miranda Granger. After being beaten on the scorecards, a result she replicated in her sophomore appearance against Diana Belbi??, a victory over Emily Whitmire last September saved herself from an 0-3 UFC record that not many survive.

While McCann will be targeting another memorable home-crowd moment, Goldy will be looking to spoil the party by adding a second Octagon victory to her record.

The current fights expected to take place at UFC London on July 23 are as follows:

Curtis Blaydes vs. Tom Aspinall (heavyweight main event)

Darren Till vs. Jack Hermansson (middleweight)

Nikita Krylov vs. Alexander Gustafsson (light heavyweight)

Molly McCann vs. Hannah Goldy (women’s flyweight)

Muhammad Mokaev vs. Charles Johnson (flyweight)

Will Molly McCann record another memorable finish in England’s capital this summer?

Hardy Explains What’s Blocking UFC’s Return To Liverpool

Former UFC welterweight Dan Hardy says the UFC is unable to return to Liverpool as the Arena no longer hosts combat sports.

Liverpool has previously held a UFC event headlined by its hometown star Darren Till who took on Stephen Thompson in the main event back in May 2018. That event took place in Liverpool Arena formerly known as the Echo Arena.

The Arena itself has since been renamed the M&S Bank Arena for sponsorship reasons back in 2019.

Hardy believes that the change in naming rights is what’s blocking the UFC from returning to Liverpool. He explained in an interview with The MMA Hour the reasons behind it.

“This is the reason why the UFC aren’t going back to Liverpool, is because they’ve got a different sponsor at the arena. And the sponsor won’t allow combat sports. Yeah, the Echo is no longer the Echo. I think it’s the M&S Arena, Marks & Spencer. It’s a different brand, and they won’t allow combat sports. So, that’s what’s putting the block on Paddy and Molly coming back to Liverpool. Very, Very sad. Really disappointing, and very short-sighted of that brand… It’d be incredible.”

It appears with the brand sponsoring, the Arena is against entertaining combat sports in any capacity.

M&S Bank Arena

However, the M&S Bank Arena has previously held boxing events under the new sponsor. The Arena hosted a combat sports event as recently as last Friday when a Probellum boxing event saw Paul Butler take on Jonas Sultan for the interim WBO bantamweight title at the Arena.

This could mean that the M&S Bank Arena is against hosting MMA specifically, which would only infuriate both Paddy Pimblett and Molly McCann who have been vocal about their ambitions to headline events in the city.

Should the UFC return to Liverpool, one of the pair could headline the card in the main event as well as a possible return for fan-favorite Till. There have been claims that the Arena could be too small to host a UFC event currently due to the popularity of the sport in the UK.

The M&S Bank Arena has almost half the capacity of the O2 Arena which typically hosts UFC London. Rumors have spread surrounding Anfield Stadium hosting a UFC event in its place yet an event there would also involve complications.

Would you like to see UFC return to Liverpool? Or should the UFC stick to London?

Molly McCann is to be the subject of her own documentary film.

One of the brightest rising stars in the UFC at this time is Molly McCann. “Meatball” as she is nicknamed has made her rise up the UFC flyweight in the last few years. Today, she is one of the most popular English fighters on the roster and just possibly a few fights away from breaking the top ten. McCann’s life outside of fighting has been a bit more private than some other fighters but now she will be letting fans in to see her struggles and successes in a whole new way.

BT Sport will be putting out a feature documentary film on McCann’s rise to the UFC. It will show her life inside the cage and out, from her childhood in Liverpool to her most recent fight endeavors. The film was able to capture private moments with McCann as well as interviews with her closest family and friends.

McCann has had highs and lows in her UFC career so far. She lost her debut in her hometown of Liverpool but came back to win three in a row. She won her last outing against Ji Yeon Kim and has her next fight set against Luana Carolina at UFC on ESPN+ 62 in London. McCann has also been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights as this cause is very close to her.

“Meatball Molly takes the viewer on an evocative journey of an incredibly strong and inspirational sportswoman, highlighting the passion, dedication, and commitment it requires to make it in professional sport,” BT Sport Films Executive Producer and Commissioning Editor, Sally Brown told Givemesports.com.

‘Meatball Molly’ will premiere exclusively on BT Sport on March 15th at 22.30 GMT.

Will you be tuning in to watch this Molly McCann film?

UFC flyweight Molly McCann has set her sights on a title venture in 2023, but in the meantime, there is another cause near and dear to the flyweight’s heart.

As a strong supporter of the Rainbow Laces organization, the colored shoelaces have become a fixture for the inclusion of all people regardless of orientation. Molly McCann is a part of the Rainbow Laces team and recently became an ambassador for the LGBTQ part of the sports campaign.

“Meatball” likes to prepare for competition by representing those colored laces. As an MMA fighter who struggled to come out and announce her sexual identity, she believes being an ambassador might help her reach and encourage a wider audience.

“When I was fighting and traveling the world, I thought, ‘how can I show my support in what I’m doing?’ So I put the laces in my boxing gloves, and in my boots if I’m ever wrestling or anything like that.” McCann stated.

“For me, I was running away from who I was for a long time. It was my sport, my coaches and my gym that allowed me to come out.” McCann said.

McCann believes sports should always offer a safe haven for individuals. In her particular situation, “Meatball” credits her MMA team and gym for helping her come out in a positive manner.

“Sport should always be that safe space for someone, whether it’s leaving an abusive home and family life, or whether you’re escaping the reality of who you are.” McCann said.

Despite the obstacles of being an openly out athlete, Molly McCann is determined to make a champion out of herself with the support of the LGBTQ community behind her. As a new ambassador for the Rainbow Laces sports campaign, the Liverpudlian hopes to have a lasting impact on helping LGBTQ communities going forward.
