Tom Wright: UFC 140 in Montreal in December Quite Possible and GSP vs. Nick Diaz Main Event Isn’t Being Ruled Out

Montreal is being targeted as the site of UFC 140 on December 10 according to the UFC’s director of Canadian operations Tom Wright who revealed the news on Ringside Report Radio Wednesday night.

“We’ll do Vancouver on June 11 and then most likely we’ll be back in Montreal on December 10,” Wright said.“We know how important this market is to us and putting on great fights. [Bell Centre’s]  a great venue, it’s a great fan-base, it’s a great environment. The energy in that building is as good as any building in North America. We’ll always have a soft spot for Montreal.”

Although he said that talk of a proposed title-unification bout between UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz for the card is premature, Wright didn’t exactly discount the notion.

“Well I’ve heard about the Nick Diaz-GSP fight but it is too early [to tell],” Wright said.

When you look at the current contenders in the UFC, who could they put in at this point against GSP who would have a better chance than Jake Shields or any of the other half dozen fighters who have challenged St-Pierre the past few years?

Time for us to give Dana a call.

TORONTO – Kyle Watson doesn’t want to make too big a fuss over his fight against John Makdessi because, well, the two are “definitely not teammates.”

But in a sport in which every little advantage could be the difference between a win and a loss, Watson will take what he can get.

Watson (13-6-1, 1-0 UFC) and Makdessi (8-0, 1-0 UFC) meet on the preliminary card of UFC 129 in Toronto on Saturday, but it was the short time they spent together at the Tristar Gym in Montreal that is eliciting a few whispers.

Dana WhiteUFC president Dana White said Tuesday he was “blown away” by fan response to the promotion’s April show in Toronto.

UFC 129, scheduled for April 30 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, reportedly sold 42,000 tickets from its UFC Fight Club and newsletter presales alone last week – which led the UFC and Rogers Centre officials to reconfigure the seating setup to add more tickets for Saturday’s public on-sale.

Within minutes, the additional ticket allotment was gone, and the UFC had a new personal best – and North American record – 55,000 tickets sold with a record $11 million gate. White said the company took a risk putting that many tickets on sale for its first stadium show – but was banking on previous successes in Canada, in Montreal and Vancouver.

When UFC 124: St-Pierre vs. Koscheck 2 reaches its climax at the Bell Centre in Montreal, we’ll finally have an answer to a question that’s been burning for months now. Namely, whether Josh Koscheck’s approach to his title fight with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre was deviously brilliant or delusionally stupid. Not since Chael Sonnen […]

(Koscheck showing the Canadian customs agent his passport.)

Well, tonight’s the night we get to see if Josh Koscheck is full of shit or if he really has improved exponentially more than UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has since the last time they met three years ago.

I find it interesting that in the UFC 124 previews the UFC is touting Kos as some kind of pugilistic wrecking machine when he has only won one fight by KO and two by TKO since 2006 and the guys he beat (Yoshiyuki Yoshida, Frank Trigg and Dustin Hazelett) aren’t exactly known for their durable chins.

If I had to make a surefire prediction for the main event bout, I’d say that Koscheck’s ego has not gotten over the fact that GSP, who didn’t even wrestle in high school, outwrestled a division one champion like him, and he will likely try to prove himself on the mat and not on the feet.

It may have been a coincidence, but Kos’ American Kickboxing Academy teammate, Phil Baroni backed my inclination when he told us this week that the peroxided prick is a way better wrestler and that he will control the fight with his wrestling. I’m guessing that Baroni was around when the AKA coaches worked on implementing Kocheck’s game plan for the fight during training and may have included portions of it in his own prediction, kind of like his plethora of "borrowed" daily Twitter quotes he intertwines with his own personal NYBA witticisms.

Whatever the case may be, it should be interesting to see if GSP lets him execute anything before he puts his own strategy into motion.

Let’s get this thing going.
