Turns Out Rampage will be Fighting in Japan After All

Quinton Jackson Dr. Phil
(And that’s why I invented Twitter, Mr. Rampage, so men everywhere could express their feelings.)

Though we reported earlier this week that it seemed as if Quinton “Rampage”  Jackson would not be getting his requested fight at UFC 144 in Japan, it turns out the former UFC light heavyweight champion will indeed be getting the wish he requested in the wake of his loss to Jon Jones at UFC 135. And though Stephan Bonnar was more than willing to face Page, the spot will be given to TUF 8 winner Ryan Bader instead.

Bader is coming off a first round knockout over Jason Brilz at UFC 139 that snapped a two fight losing streak to Jon Jones and Tito Ortiz at UFC 126 and UFC 132, respectively.

A win for either fighter could easily launch them back into the title mix, and given Rampage earns title shots almost as easy as Urijah Faber, if he is able to finish Bader impressively, I am going as far as to predict that he leapfrogs Rashad Evans for another crack at Jones.

UFC 144 goes down February 26th at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

You know the deal, who you got for this one, Potato Nation?

The UFC has added a pair of intriguing featherweight fights to its return to Brazil.

Michihiro Omigawa vs. Yuri Alcantara and Felipe Arantes vs. Antonio Carvalho have been added to UFC 142, which is scheduled to take place Jan. 14 in Brazil. An exact city and venue has yet to be announced.

Most considered Japan‘s Omigawa (13-10-1) a lock for the UFC’s return to Japan in February, but after picking up his first UFC win earlier this month against Jason Young at UFC 138, the organization decided to book him against the 26-3 Alcantara, who defeated Felipe Arantes at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro.

Speaking of Arantes (13-4), he will look to rebound against the debuting Carvalho, who was supposed to fight Alcantara at UFC 134 before an injury forced him to pull out of the bout. Carvalho will enter the Octagon for the first time with an identical 13-4 record and has defeated the likes of Takeshi Inoue, Hatsu Hioki and Doug Evans en route to the UFC.

UFC 142 will be headlined by another pair of featherweights — featherweight champion Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes — as well as Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson.

Give Thanks: ‘Pele’ vs. ‘Macaco’ III is Going Down in January

(Video courtesy of YouTube/TeflonMaster)

If you’ve followed MMA for more than a few years, you know who Jose “Pele” Landi-Jons is.

Anderson Silva — a longtime training partner of “Pele,” who lost to the Cuban-born fighter twice in muay thai competition — credits the original Chuteboxe team fighter with helping make him the dangerous fighter he is today.

Well, it appears that Pele is back to form after suffering a career threatening leg break back in 2008 and now the 38-year-old, who is undefeated in his four bouts since returning from the grisly injury, will take on Jorge “Macaco” Patino for the third time at MMA Combat 2 Kumite on January 20 in Brazil.

The pair’s original two fights — which saw Landi-Jons win in back-to-back match-ups — were legendary. Surprisingly, Macaco fought for the UFC and Strikeforce (and lost both bouts), yet Pele never got the call from either promotion.

Another note of interest is that Landi-Jons, who spent the last four years training in British Columbia, Canada at Revolution MMA with the likes of Bill Mahood, Kultar Gill and Bibiano Fernandes, has reportedly returned to Chuteboxe to train with one of his original instructors, Rudimar Fedrigo.

The PRIDE vet whose biggest win came against a prime Matt Hughes, posted the news of his return to the once fabled camp on his Facebook page last night.

Stay tuned for more on the card and whether or not it will be broadcast or streamed.

Quinton Jackson is headed back to Japan.

After campaigning for a spot on the UFC 144 card immediately after his loss to Jon Jones in September, the UFC has granted Jackson’s wish of fighting in the Land of the Rising Sun. Jackson (32-9) has agreed to meet Ryan Bader (13-2) on the Feb. 26 card at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed the news with ESPN.com on Thursday.

Amazingly, when Jackson meets Bader at UFC 144, it will mark exactly six years since his last fight in Japan. On Feb. 26, 2006, “Rampage” defeated Yoon Dong-Sik via unanimous decision at PRIDE 31. In total, the former PRIDE star competed in 20 MMA/kickboxing fights in Japan.

The 33-year-old Jackson is 2-2 in his last four fights. He had won two in a row before losing to Jones in a UFC light heavyweight title fight at UFC 135.

Bader, 28, snapped his two-fight losing streak last weekend at UFC 139 when he knocked out Jason Brilz in the first round. Prior to that win, Bader had lost to Jon Jones and Tito Ortiz in 2011.

UFC 144 will mark the organization’s first event in Japan since Dec. 2000. The main event will feature Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson for the UFC lightweight title.
