Former NFL player Greg Hardy may be on a fast track for the UFC roster, but he will have at least one more fight before making his official Octagon debut.

Hardy, 3-0, will compete in a heavyweight bout against a yet-to-be-determined opponent under the Island Fights banner on Dec. 21 in Pensacola, Fla. ESPN first broke the story.

The venue is also yet to be determined. However, official announcements are expected to come in the near future.

The former All-Pro has been downright impressive during his short time in the cage. Hardy competed on ‘Dana White’s Tuesday Contender Series’ over the summer and scored a brutal 57-second KO. He followed that performance up a few weeks later with a 17-second knock out on the same show.

Hardy just recently fought at Xtreme Fight Night 352 in September. There, he won via 53-second knockout over Rasheem Jones.

Although very impressed by Hardy’s performances, UFC President Dana White feels the former footballer isn’t UFC caliber yet. Perhaps a fourth straight win in dominant fashion could earn Hardy his UFC contract.

We are midway through the biggest fight week in MMA history.

UFC 229 is just days away but does it feel like it should be bigger? Does it feel like it should have been promoted differently?

UFC President Dana White has gone on the record and stated this is the biggest fight in the promotion’s history. The outspoken executive is predicting a record-demolishing three million PPV buys. Many other media outlets have echoed that very sentiment, albeit to a lesser extent. Any time you have the sport’s most recognizable star coming back after a two-year hiatus, it’s going to make headlines, and for good reason.

But honestly, doesn’t it feel like UFC 229 should be bigger than it has been thus far? We here at LowkickMMA think so, and that’s why we broke down six ways the UFC could have perhaps promoted the event better.

Check them out here:

Dana White Overestimated McGregor’s Appeal

Is it possible that White was wrongly banking on Conor McGregor and the entire country of Ireland?

We all know that the Irish fans travel well, probably better than just about any other group of people. Especially McGregor’s crazy passionate fans. I’m sure there will be a massive cheering section at the sold-out T-Mobile Arena for one Conor McGregor, but how many of those fans will be from the Emerald Isle across the pond?

McGregor’s appeal may have taken a big blow as it came to the casual fan when he tried his hand at the sweeter science of combat sports. His loss to Floyd Mayweather isn’t going to sway his believers. When all is said and done, UFC 229 will probably do monster numbers.

But you can only wonder what Conor’s appeal would be if he were the 1 in 50-1.

Greg Hardy Booked For Fight Pass-Aired Bout This Month

Greg Hardy’s next fight is set for a Fight Pass-aired event:

Greg Hardy has his next fight set.

The controversial MMA veteran will continue his pro-MMA journey when he competes in a regional bout at the end of the month. Hardy has been scheduled to face 1-1 competitor Ray Jones (1-1) at Xtreme Fight Night 352 on September 29 from the River Spirit Casino Resort in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The fight was first reported by MMAjunkie. It will air on UFC Fight Pass.

Hardy, of course, brings notoriety from his time as a Pro Bowl NFL players – and the domestic violence scandal that followed. UFC President Dana White has repeatedly stated Hardy deserves another chance in MMA.

The hulking knockout slugger began his fight career in amateur bouts. He dominated all comers with ease. Hardy then graduated on to appear on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series (DWTNCS). Two knockout wins (in 57 and 17 seconds) at DWTNCS 9 and 16 got him signed to a developmental deal with the UFC.

That journey will continue against Jones at Xtreme Fight Night 352.

But many fans will wonder why Hardy isn’t facing an opponent with at least somewhat more skill. He’s beaten all of the lesser-experienced fighters that he’s faced. Hardy may not be ready to take on top-level pros, but he deserves a step up in level of opponents.

This fight will most likely end in another brutal first-round knockout for Hardy. The real questions will start when he actually faces a heavyweight who can make him dig deep.

Greg Hardy Addresses Haters With Donald Trump Comparison

Greg Hardy

With his MMA career surging early on, Greg Hardy addressed the criticism he frequently receives.

And it might not be how you thought he’d do it.

Hardy picked up his second professional win on the final episode of ‘Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contenders Series’ last night. Knocking out Tebaris Gordon in only 17 seconds (watch full highlights here), Hardy proved his lethal knockout skill.

If he ever debuts in the UFC, Hardy will obviously be under an intense microscope due to the scrutiny of his questionable – and at times criminal – past. UFC President Dana White stuck up for his fighter after his victory last night, and now the former NFL star has responded himself.

Speaking to media last night via MMA Fighting, Hardy seemed to vaguely bring up President Donald Trump as an example of a man who truly had haters:

“I mean, there’s guys out here that go their whole life, get a billion dollars, become president, and hate on a person that’s never been arrested that’s opening schools for kids out here. So, that man’s got haters, I’m really not worried, honestly.”

Hardy then said if his haters met him and didn’t like him, then it was time to actually change something:

“All I can say is, when they meet me, and then they have a problem with me. Thats when I need to change something, you know, see God, see these people that can help me redjust. But for right now, God bless ’em. And like I said last time, keep watchin’ and I’ll keep proving ’em wrong, and I don’t mind the confrontation”
