Unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has launched a charitable foundation to help fellow Ukrainians affected by the Russian invasion.

Usyk returned to his home country back in February when Ukraine was invaded by Russia. The heavyweight joined the armed defense against the invasion but was later allowed to leave the country to train for his upcoming rematch with Anthony Joshua.

Since, Usyk has been doing everything in his power to launch aid to his fellow Ukrainians during this troubling time. After launching his non-profit foundation, Usyk announced he’d be selling 2,000 NFTs (non-fungible tokens), expected to raise $1 million in relief in the leadup to the rematch.

In addition, The Usyk Foundation is also looking to provide those affected by the war with medical supplies, food, and hygiene items. The humanitarian aid will be delivered to ocal governments, medical institutions, or humanitarian headquarters across Ukraine.

“Helping one’s country and its people win this horrendous war started by the Russian Federation has become the goal for the entire Ukrainian nation,” said Usyk.

“I call on the world community, my boxing colleagues, and people of conscience who are aware of the terrible crimes Russia is committing right now against innocent people. We need your help and support.

“Ukrainians already have the power of unity, capable of defeating any evil. Now it’s time to join forces globally. Any contribution is valuable, as it brings us closer to victory and peaceful life in Ukraine, in Europe.

“I believe the good that one puts out into the world always comes back to the giver. So let’s fight on the side of the light, the Ukrainian side.”

Inside the ring, Oleksandr Usyk is undefeated at 19-0. His last outing resulted in a unanimous decision win over Anthony Joshua where he captured the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles.

His rematch with Joshua has not yet officially received a date but is expected for later this year.

Undefeated heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk has been stripped of his Crimean honors for fighting with Ukraine during the Russian invasion.

For his outstanding achievements in sports and duty to his country, Usyk was labeled an “Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports of the ARC”. But now that Usyk has made his stance in the war clear, he no longer owns that title.

Crimean Parliament chairman Vladimir Konstantinov made the decision to do so, deeming Usyk unworthy of the honorary title.

But Usyk is not the only one to come under fire for his stance on the European war.

Former Ukraine Presidents Leonid Kravchuk and Leonid Kuchma were also deprived of their Crimean state awards, as was Ukrainian singer and TV host Zlata Ognevich, who was given an honor for her music career.

Konstantinov informed the RIA:

“These are [people] who arranged and welcomed the water and energy blockade of Crimea, who question the fairness and legitimacy of our return to Russia, who stained themselves with Russophobia. Such people are not worthy of a good memory.” (h/t Mirror)

Crimea has been a part of the Russian Federation since 2014. Certain parts of the region were controlled by Ukraine until February 2022 when Vladimir Putin began his attacks on the country.

Usyk has remained in Ukraine training for his world title defense rematch against fellow boxing champion Anthony Joshua. But like other Ukrainian fighters such as Vasyl Lomachenko and Bellator champion Yaroslav Amosov, Usyk now fights for a different cause.

Matchroom Boxing has announced they will be postponing all of their shows scheduled for May including two pay-per-view events.

The sports promotion run by Eddie Hearn broke the news today which will see Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin, Oleksandr Usyk vs. Dereck Chisora and Lee Selby vs. George Kambosos Jr all temporarily shelved.

See the full statement below.

“In line with the BBBofC (British Boxing Board of
Control) and Government guidelines relating to COVID-19, Matchroom Boxing have
postponed all events scheduled to be taking place in May, including Dillian
Whyte vs. Alexander Povetkin at the Manchester Arena on May 2, Lee Selby vs.
George Kambosos Jr at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff on May 9 and Oleksandr Usyk
vs. Dereck Chisora at The O2 in London on May 23.

Subject to the developing situation, Whyte’s Interim WBC Heavyweight World Title clash with Povetkin has been rescheduled to Saturday July 4th, while Selby’s IBF Lightweight World Title Final Eliminator against Kambosos Jr has been rescheduled to Saturday July 11th. Tickets will be valid for these rescheduled dates or refunds will be available from your point of purchase.

A new date for Usyk’s blockbuster Heavyweight
showdown with Chisora is also being worked on, with tickets remaining valid for
the rescheduled date once announced and refunds available from you point of
purchase.”

It remains to be seen if the new dates will even be viable and these events could well be pushed back again. As of right now, Anthony Joshua’s mandatory title defence against Kubrat Pulev set to take place on June 20 at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is still going ahead as planned. However, you can only imagine a similar announcement will be made delaying that fight in the coming days or weeks.

Are you disappointed to see Dillian Whyte vs
Alexander Povetkin and Oleksandr Usyk vs Dereck Chisora postponed?

Former undisputed champion at cruiserweight Oleksandr Usyk is planning to repeat his achievements at heavyweight.

The 33-year-old Ukrainian has told Sky Sports he plans to beat British heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to capture all the belts.

“I work hard on it,” said Usyk, when asked about becoming undisputed at heavyweight. However, when asked who he would prefer to fight, the talented southpaw was unsurprisingly nonchalant. “I want to fight both.”, he said.

Both Joshua and Fury have fights booked in against Kubrat Pulev and Deontay Wilder, respectively. Usyk isn’t really interested in those, though. He just wants the belts. “The last thing I think about is who will fight who. No predictions,”

Injury has hampered Usyk’s time at heavyweight. So far, he has fought just once, beating Chazz Witherspoon in October 2019.

“I need to stay active. I need to box,” he said. “If your vocation is passive, it’s not good. If you stay active, it’s very good. This is my active vocation.”

Next, he’ll face Dereck Chisora on May 23 – Coronavirus permitting. It’s a sizeable step up against a real dangerous heavyweight. However, his manager Egis Klimas is confident of handling ‘Del Boy’ before moving on to bigger things, he said.

“Right now, we have to win [against Chisora], then after the mandatory fight for the WBO has to happen.

“I believe Anthony also wants this fight. Good fighters want to fight good fighters. Anthony sees a good challenge in Oleksandr and wants to go there. Everybody says Oleksandr will give Anthony problems, but Anthony believes the opposite, so he wants to show that he is stronger.

“In the UK would make sense – it wouldn’t make sense to go to the States with one boxer from the UK and one from Ukraine. The UK fans know Usyk.”
