Weidman Facing Akhmedov In August

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has a new opponent.

According to multiple media outlets confirming an initial report from TASS journalist Igor Lazorin, Weidman will meet Omari Akhmedov in the UFC’s upcoming August 8 event.

The event has no location as of now, but is expected to take place at the Apex facility in Las Vegas. A heavyweight matchup between Derrick Lewis and Aleksei Oleinik is the planned headliner for the card.

Both fighters have since confirmed the matchup:

“Fight announcement ! August 8th. Chris Weidman vs Omari Akhmedov! Lets go ! Excited to be fighting this tough Russian fighter. ”

Weidman is on a two-fight losing streak and has also suffered defeat in five of his last six outings — all coming by way of knockout. His most recent outing was a failed light heavyweight debut against Dominick Reyes back in October.

Akhmedov, meanwhile, is on a winning run. Having moved up from welterweight, the Russian is currently on a three-fight winning streak at 185 pounds, having most recently outpointed Ian Heinisch at UFC 245 in December.

Despite the winning run, Akhmedov is a step down from Weidman’s usual opponents as he isn’t even ranked as of now. That is a good thing for “The All American” who will be eager to earn his first win in nearly three years when he beat Kelvin Gastelum back in July 2017.

Omari Akhmedov’s wrestling sealed the deal in his bout against Abdul Razak Alhassan.

The two touched gloves as the opening round began. Quickly Alhassan found himself on the canvas. He got back to his feet and the two separated. Alhassan parried a kick to the body. Akhmedov drove in and took his opponent down. They stood back up in short order. The two threw bombs near the end of the round.

The second stanza was underway and a head kick from Alhassan was blocked. A leg kick connected for Akhmedov. Alhassan picked his shots, but his opponent wasn’t backing down. Akhmedov shot in and completed a takedown. Alhassan got back up. An overhand right landed for Akhmedov. Yet another takedown was there for Akhmedov.

Alhassan went for a big leg kick early in the final round. A double leg takedown was there for Akhmedov, but he was reversed and Alhassan got up. Akhmedov got another takedown and found mount. The fight ended with Akhmedov going for a takedown near the fence.

Two of the three judges scored the fight for Akhmedov.

Final Result: Omari Akhmedov def. Razak Alhassan via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27)

At the UFC’s return trip Down Under this weekend, a local favorite dropped a hard fought decision to a former training partner and then announced his retirement from the sport.

UFC Fight Night 101: Whittaker vs. Brunson took place live from Melbourne, Australia on Saturday with a fight card that aired on FOX Sports 1 (FS1) and saw Kyle Noke lose to Omari Akmedov in a grueling three-round battle via judges scores of 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27. After the fight, Noke would officially retire from the fight game.

It was a rough night for Noke in Melbourne as Akhmedov delivered a bruising for most of the fight.

The two fighters exchanged body kicks. An overhand right connected for Akhmedov. He swarmed his opponent and took him to the ground. An elbow from “Wolverine” found the target. Blood trickled down the face of Noke thanks to a hard punch. “KO” was in search of a triangle choke, but couldn’t get it. Akhmedov dropped some hard punches as the round ended.

A leg kick landed for Noke early in the second stanza. Noke grazed his opponent with a head kick. Akhmedov shot in and dumped Noke down. The action stalled and both fighters were forced to stand back up. An inside leg kick landed for Noke. A left hook found the mark for “Wolverine.” A straight right counter landed for Akhmedov. The round ended and it was clear Akhmedov was ahead.

The two men touched gloves as the final round began. Noke went for a front kick, but missed. “KO” kept landing leg kicks, but no significant damage was done. He ducked under a counter right hand. Akhmedov caught a kick and threw a combination that was blocked. Noke’s corner yelled at him to pressure “Wolverine” with under two minutes left in the fight. “KO” didn’t turn up his intensity despite being down in the fight. Akhmedov sealed the deal with a takedown and he remained in top control for most of the round.

To the surprise of no one, all three judges awarded the fight to Akhmedov.

Final Result: Omari Akhmedov def. Kyle Noke via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
