The Coronavirus pandemic continues to play havoc with MMA schedules with ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong announcing on Facebook today that all May events are to be indefinitely postponed.

ONE had three events scheduled for May, starting with two Singapore shows on May 1 and 8 and ending with what was supposed to be the promotions first mega event of 2020 ONE: Infinity 1 on May 29 inside the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.

BREAKING NEWS: All May events for ONE Championship will be postponed until further notice due to the recent COVID-19…

Posted by Chatri Sityodtong on Sunday, April 26, 2020

Sityodtong’s announcement comes as no great surprise, given that Singapore’s lockdown, which started on April 7 and which was due to end on May 4, has now been extended until June 1.

It will be interesting to see the plan ONE comes up with in terms of producing shows going forward. Even if ONE gets the green light to hold closed-door events in Singapore, overseas-based fighters flying into the “Lion City,” will almost certainly be required to undergo a period of self-isolation for 14 days.

Few fighters will relish the thought of spending two weeks confined to a hotel room, but it may be what is required to make fights happen. However, ONE may be looking at options outside of Singapore or could be waiting to see what type of restrictions will be placed on visitors come June 1 before they begin making concentrate plans.

Times like this calls for companies to think outside the box and the brains trust at ONE will no doubt be looking at doing whatever it takes to safely get events running again.

Johnson Khabib

Demetrious Johnson’s dream fight in any weight class is UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Johnson — currently plying his trade at ONE Championship — is regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world as well as a contender for the greatest fighter of all time.

However, many observers feel the former longtime UFC flyweight champion doesn’t get the respect he deserves due to competing in the smaller 125-pound division. What can’t be denied, however, is the skillset of “Mighty Mouse” as he is adept in just about every department in mixed martial arts.

And if he could test that skillset against any fighter, it would be against Nurmagomedov:

“All my respect to my man Khabib Nurmagomedov — I think I would like to fight him,” Johnson told Bleacher Report Live. “He’s so good about what he does. He doesn’t care about what you bring to the table and I like that aspect about him.”

Nurmagomedov is notably 28-0 and is yet to meet his match in the UFC so far thanks to his superior grappling and wrestling ability. There are other dream fights for Johnson as well, but “The Eagle” stands out more than anyone as of now.

“Or even GSP, even Jon Jones, those guys are considered amongst the greats in the world,” he added. “But I think Khabib Nurmagomedov, he’s one of the fighters now where when he’s about to fight, I get up and I’m like, ‘oh yeah, The Eagle’s coming to maul somebody.’ I think the reason why is because he’s so humble. I love humble athletes.”

Who do you think would come out on top if Johnson and Nurmagomedov were the same size?

ONE Championship

ONE Championship has been forced to postpone two shows scheduled for April due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Asian based promotion had previously planned to press ahead with their events until June behind closed doors. Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA last week, ONE Vice-President Miesha Tate confirmed this was still the intention but stressed safety was paramount, she said.

“Right now the game plan is changing every day as is the spread of COVID-19. I can assure you ONE Championship is taking this matter very seriously, we are executing extreme safety precautions for all our staff and fans as safety is a top priority! But the show must go on! We have a will and we will find a way!”

Unfortunately for fight fans, ONE has been unable to find a way to press on. The promotions CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced late last night all audience-free events in April had been postponed, he said.

“BREAKING NEWS: Unfortunately, ONE Championship will have to postpone its closed-door, audience-free events for April due to new COVID-19 restrictions. To extinguish the recent growth of the coronavirus, the Singapore Government has just wisely ordered a partial lockdown of the country, whereby effective tomorrow (April 7th) onwards, only essential services (such as food, healthcare, and transportation) are allowed to operate. Additionally, major countries (China, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Russia, India, Vietnam, Japan, etc) have temporarily closed their borders.

“We are living through the most extraordinary of times. The good news is that these short-term restrictions will undoubtedly slow down the coronavirus, and flatten the curve. To be clear though, it needs all of us to work together with vigilance. The most important thing that we can do as individuals is to follow the strict orders of our respective governments and to practice social distancing, good hygiene, and telecommuting. The virus cannot spread if we all stay at home. It really is as simple as that. Let us join hands in this fight and stand united as ONE. #WeAreONE

ONE Championship has yet to make any official announcements regarding matchups for its upcoming Singapore shows. Still, it now appears that ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion Xiong Jing Nan will soon be defending her title.

The 32-year-old is currently in Singapore, and yesterday in an Instagram post, she revealed she has just signed a bout agreement. Singapore has introduced tight new rules for arrivals into the city-state, requiring all new entrants to self-isolate for 14 days. So the fact that Xiong is already in Singapore is an indicator that she will be fighting in the near future, perhaps as early as April 17 when ONE:Hope, takes place.

There was no mention of who she would be facing in the post, but the logical choice would be Singapore’s, Tiffany Teo. The pair previously fought back in 2018, with Xiong stopping Teo in the fourth round to claim the inaugural ONE Women’s Strawweight World Championship. Since then, Teo has racked up two straight wins in the division, while Xiong has recorded three successful title defenses.

ONE’s four upcoming shows are all scheduled to take place behind closed doors, and due to the ongoing travel restrictions around the world, the cards are likely to feature a high number of Singapore-based fighters.
