ONE Championship’s Singapore cards are the promotions flagship events.

The company is known to bring out its big guns whenever it touches down in the “Lion City” and ONE: Heart of the Lion is no exception.

Despite the loss of the headline title bout between Angela Lee and defending strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan, the 14-bout card remains stacked with an array of potentially explosive matchups.

The evening’s main event between bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes and interim champion Kevin Belingon for the unified ONE Bantamweight World Championship is shaping up as  a fight the year contender.

Fernandes, the most dominant champion in the promotion and has ruled the ONE bantamweight division with an iron grip for over a half a decade.

Still, age catches up with all athletes no matter how talented and the 38-year old , who is coming back from injury, now appears to be entering the twilight of his career.

It just so happens that this is occurring at the same time as Belingon is coming into his prime.

Belingon, always regarded as one of the sharpest strikers in the division, previously fought Fernandes for the title back in 2016.

A first-round submission victory to the Brazilian exposed holes in Belingon’s ground game, sending him back to the drawing board.

The Filipino put in the hours, and the results speak for themselves.  The 31-year-old is undefeated since his 2016 loss and enters this bout on the back of a six-fight winning streak.

It feels risky to bet against an athlete as experienced as Fernandes, but it is hard to see Belingon not leaving the cage with the belt, given the form he has been in lately.

The night’s co-main event is a late notice affair due to the cancellation of the strawweight title bout.

Singapore’s Christian Lee, Angela Lee’s younger brother, will take on Japan’s Kazuki Tokudome in what should be an intriguing matchup. At only 20 years of age Lee, is one of the top athletes competing in the featherweight division.

However, 2018 has not been the best of years for “The Warrior.”

Lee is on a two-fight losing streak after falling to Martian Nguyen in their title clash back in May and was then disqualified – due to an illegal suplex – in his return bout with Edward Kelly.

The loss to Kelly would have cut Lee particularly deep as up until his disqualification he had been winning comfortably.

Tokudome, a recent arrival from Pancrase, should provide Lee with a stern test. The 31-year-old, who also fought under the UFC banner, will be looking to make a statement in his most high profile ONE Championship appearance to-date.

A victory over the hometown hero would go a long to helping Tokudome establish himself as a legitimate title contender.

Outside of the main and co-main events, the card is filled with solid matchups.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu wunderkind Garry Tonon will enter the cage for the third time in his career when he takes on Sung Jong Lee in their featherweight clash.

The 27-year-old Tonon, a five-time Eddie Bravo Invitational champion, is still in the early stages of his mixed martial arts career.

While his stand-up is still levels below his grappling, Tonon’s willingness to mix it up on his feet gives his bouts an air of unpredictability.

Striking fans will be well looked after with four Super Series bouts going down on the night.

The must-see fight  out of the four will be the return of Giorgio Petrosyan.

The 32-year has one of the most storied resumes in kickboxing and will face off against Sorgraw Petchyindee Academy, a Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Champion.

In one of the opening bouts of the night, Muhammad Aiman will look to continue his excellent form in his bantamweight clash with Shuya Kamikubo.

Aiman has earned a reputation as a dynamic stand-up striker and is someone who always brings something new to each fight

The strawweight clash between former Singapore boxing champion Tiffany Teo and eight-time BJJ world champion Michelle Nicolini is without a doubt one of the cards hidden gems.

Both women have recently spent time away from the spotlight as they worked on improving their skillset and it will be interesting to see what each of them bring to the cage on fight night.

A dominant win for either athlete could set them up for a title shot in 2019.

Due to its recent signings, ONE has been in the news a lot recently, and ONE: Heart of Lion should serve as the perfect introduction for new fans looking to begin following the promotion.

The full card will start at 6 PM Singapore time and can be watched for free via the ONE app.

ONE Championship continues to make waves in the world of mixed martial arts as they announced via a press release that Miesha Tate will serve as the new Vice President.

The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced that it has appointed former women’s mixed martial arts world champion Miesha Tate as Vice President of ONE Championship.

The news of Tate’s signing is just the latest in a string of high prifle signings for the Asian based promotion. Former UFC Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez signed a massive fight deal to come on board and that was followed by MMA’s first ever trade that sent Demetrious Johnson to ONE in exchange for Ben Askren.

ONE’s CEO Chatri Sityodting welcomed his new vice president via a tweet as the news broke:

Tate later released a statement of her own thanking her new boss and stating she is looking forward to relocating to Singapore.

“I am thrilled to join ONE Championship as a Vice President,” Tate stated. “I truly believe in its mission of unleashing real-life superheroes who ignite the world with hope, strength, dreams, and inspiration. I’m honored to bring my experience as a world champion and to help inspire the next generation of athletes. And of course, I am excited to relocate to my new home, Singapore, and travel throughout Asia.”

ONE Championship is back in action on Friday with “ONE Championship 83: Heart of the Lion,” which takes place at Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Why Bibiano Fernandes Is Arguably The Greatest Brazilian Martial Artist of All-Time

ONE Bantamweight Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes is set to defend his title on Friday in the main event of ONE: HEART OF A LION in Singapore. He’ll be facing interim champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belignon in a much-anticipated rematch after Fernandes scored a first-round submission win over him in their first meeting.

If Fernandes is successful in his upcoming title defense, it will be his eighth since capturing the belt. Fernandes’ career in combat sports has been a journey packed with quick study, ascension, overcoming obstacles and unprecedented achievement. As it stands, he may be the greatest Brazilian martial artist of all-time.

That concept isn’t meant to be disrespectful to the likes of Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, Amanda Nunes, Royce Gracie, Patricio Friere, Jose Aldo, Cris Cyborg or the many other outstanding competitors the country has produced. However, Fernandes has already accomplished things across multiple disciplines that warrant special attention.

His current reign as ONE Bantamweight champion began in 2013. He first captured the interim title with a unanimous-decision win over Koetsu Okazaki at ONE: RISE TO POWER. That win took place in May, and it wouldn’t take long for Fernandes to remove the interim from his title. Just five months later at ONE: TOTAL DOMINATION, the then 33-year-old Fernandes took a unanimous decision over Soo Chul Kim to become the undisputed champion. At the time, no one could have imagined Fernandes would hold the title for as long as he has, but that was the beginning of what is now the longest title reign in ONE Championship history.

There are only two competitors in MMA history to lodge more consecutive title defenses within a major organization: Demetrious Johnson, who recently signed with ONE, he had 11, and Silva who had 10. Silva is the only Brazilian to best Fernandes in that area. Aside from winning and defending the title, Fernandes is on a 14-fight win streak in total that dates back to 2010. In total, he has been one of the most dominant competitors in the history of the division in MMA.

That’s the thing about Fernandes, his resume goes beyond MMA. Before he climbed inside a cage for the first time professionally, he’d already established himself as one of the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. From 1997 to 2007, Fernandes won a total of 14 medals in the most prestigious BJJ tournaments and competitions. He’s a four-time Brazilian National champion, a four-time World champion (one-time Bronze and Silver) and a three-time Pan-American champion (one-time Bronze).

No other martial artist of any ethnicity has a BJJ and MMA background that compares. You’d have to look at someone like Daniel Cormier to find an equal when it comes to overall accomplishments in combat sports. Perhaps more important than the achievements in the arts is the journey. Fernandes overcame poverty that is almost unimaginable, to get to where he is today.

As a boy, his mother passed away when he was 7 years old. He and his family had to live in the Amazon jungle because they didn’t have the financial means to survive elsewhere. He contracted malaria, and nearly died.

When he did move to the city, he was homeless. He was introduced to BJJ, which wound up being his escape path, but because he was still without financial resources, he was forced to sleep in the gym where he trained, cleaned and did other duties to make any wages. Despite these modest beginnings, Fernandes trained and ultimately tapped into his talent as a combat sports athlete.

In addition to his accomplishments as a competitor, Fernandes has now become one of the most-respected BJJ trainers in the world. In fact, he trains Johnson and has vowed to never compete with his pupil and friend. Instead, he has his eyes set on matching or breaking Johnson’s record for consecutive defenses.

While he has ascended and established enough wealth to take care of himself, his wife and children, Fernandes remains as a humble and respectful competitor who acknowledges the values of martial arts. When you mix his intangibles with his tangible accomplishments, the argument that he is the greatest to arise from his country is a sound one.

Demetrious Johnson & Eddie Alvarez have an idea as to what their first plans under the ONE Championship banner will be. The Singapore-based promotion has revealed that their paths in the company will be similar. ONE revealed on Wednesday that the former UFC champions are slated to be part of upcoming world grand prix tournament. Obviously, Johnson will compete in the flyweight division while Alvarez will compete in the lightweight division.

“ONE Championship is a different organization,” ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong said (H/T to MMAJunkie). “ONE Championship is for martial artists, by martial artists. Every fight promotion in the world wants to put on a fight.”

Alvarez went 4-3 with one no contest during his time with the UFC after signing with the promotion in 2014. This was after getting out of his contract with Bellator MMA where he was a two-time Bellator lightweight champion. He would later go on to beat Gilbert Melendez, ex-UFC champ Anthony Pettis, and then-undisputed champ Rafael dos Anjos to win the title. He would then lose the title to Conor McGregor at the UFC 205 pay-per-view event. This was his climb to the top of the mountain of the UFC’s lightweight division.

“In ONE Championship, we want to build and unleash real-life superheroes who ignite the world with hope, strength, dreams, inspiration, and courage. We want real martial artists to stand up.”

Sityodtong continued by stating that they want their fighters to be looked at heroes and fans live through them.

“Martial arts is not about fighting and violence. It is about unleashing your greatness in life. This is the real beauty of martial arts. I want the entire world to look at our heroes and be inspired through their lives because they bare their souls to the world with every triumph and every failure.”

According to Johnson, this opportunity to compete in a grand prix is bigger than what many would think. In fact, it will fulfill a dream he’s been looking to achieve for some time now.

“I spent seven years in North America fighting the best in the world,” Johnson said. “I’ve never traveled to Asia to fight the best. I think now is the perfect time to do it.”

Henry Cejudo shocked the world when he was able to beat Johnson to capture the UFC flyweight title by split decision. This fight ended up being Johnson’s last fight in the UFC. Johnson came into this fight looking to defend his title successfully for the 12th time in his career but that was not the case. Now, he’s looking forward.

“Now that they just announced a world grand prix for the flyweight division, it’s has always been a dream of mine to actually compete in Asia in a world grand Prix.”

The former UFC flyweight champion made one promise known. That is to compete in Asia and take no shortcuts.

“The biggest thing that you can expect from me for coming over here to compete in Asia is that I’ll do my best. I am taking no shortcuts.”

Potential History-Making ONE Championship Fight Called Off

This potential history-making ONE Championship bout will have to wait a little longer.

The post Potential History-Making ONE Championship Fight Called Off appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

A potential history-making ONE Championship match has been called off.

ONE atomweight champion Angela Lee has unfortunately suffered an injury and will be forced to withdraw from her scheduled bout at Friday’s (November 9, 2018) ONE: Heart Of The Lion. Lee was previously expected to fight strawweight champion Jingnan Xiong in the main event from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.

However, ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced on Facebook today (Tues. November 6, 2018) that Lee was not medically cleared to compete, and was removed from the card:

“I am bummed to announce that our medical team has deemed ONE Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee unfit to compete in ONE: Heart Of The Lion this Friday, November 9. As such, I have made the decision to pull Angela off the card, despite her adamance to compete still in the world title fight against ONE Strawweight World Champion Jingnan Xiong.

“We all know that Angela is a warrior with an unbreakable spirit. However, she suffered a serious back injury in training last week and badly herniated a spinal disc; she was unable to walk just a few days ago.”

With the removal of Lee vs. Xiong from the card, a bantamweight title bout between Bibiano Fernandes and Kevin Belingon has been moved to the main event slot.

It was also announced that a fight between Christian Lee and Kazuki Tokudome will serve as the co-main event.
