Holly Holm fully expects to be back inside the octagon by 2023, and has even named Meisha Tate as her next possible.

Holm has been recovering from surgery after her fight with Ketlen Veira back in May. The former UFC champion ultimately loss that fight by split decision, but still feels as if she did enough that night to get her hand raised. Holm will be looking to get back inside the octagon around early 2023, and she hopes to be back in the gym training within the next few months as well.

Holm has had a history of injures that have required surgeries. Back in 2021 she had to have surgery, as her kidney was giving her some issues. That forced her to pull out of her fight with Julianna Pena, and was part of the reason she had only one fight over the span of 19 months. Holm also required surgery back in 2018, when she tore her meniscus and was forced out the entire year.

Holly Holm already has an opponent in mind for her triumphant return to the octagon

“I’m open and ready to fight anyone, but it would come full circle with Miesha [Tate],” Holm said in an interview with Brett Okamoto. “I know she went down in weight in her last fight and I don’t know what her thoughts would be on coming back up [to bantamweight], but if that’s a fight I could get back and avenge a loss, I’d love to. It’s not the only thing I’m looking at, but it’s at the top of the list.” (Transcribed by ESPN)

Holm was the first person to beat Ronda Rousey, by knocking her out with a vicious head kick. Tate would then take Holm’s championship belt away from her, by submitting her in Holm’s first title defense. Holm said that it would be nice for the story to come “full circle” as she would get another chance to beat Tate.

Amanda Nunes feels well-prepared for the “Venezuelan Vixen.”

Every fight is a different affair. Amanda Nunes knows this going into UFC 269. So, while Nunes does look back on her past camps and opponents before she faces a new challenger, the American Top Team standout also tweaks everything just enough for the fresh challenges that Julianna Peña brings (h/t Bloody Elbow).

“Julianna is an opponent I’ve known ever since the TUF days, which she won. I really know her style. She’s really close with Miesha Tate and they have the same style of fighting, but I think Julianna is even more of a grinder. We used a little bit of my camp for Tate for this Julianna fight, but with a bit more precision.”

Staying Grounded As The Champ-Champ

With wins over the likes of Ronda Rousey, Meisha Tate, Cris  Cyborg, and Holly Holm, many consider Nunes the best woman fighter to ever grace the Octagon. But the two-division champ doesn’t let her 12-fight win streak go to her head. “The Lioness” knows every opponent who stands across from her in the cage is hungry and ready to take what’s hers.

“I’m really looking forward to it, but at the same time I’m keeping my feet on the ground. I know everyone who walks into that cage will do their best to win. She has nothing to lose. I’m the champion and she’s going to come at me to take my belt. I just need to be really sharp so I can finish the fight at the right moment.”

Peña earned her shot at the champ after submitting another former title challenger in Sarah McMann at UFC 257. Pena and Nunes were expected to clash at UFC 265, but Nunes tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the bout.

The Saturday will be the Nunes’ first trip back to bantamweight in almost two years. The champ spent 2020 and 2021 thus far, defending her featherweight belt against Megan Anderson and Felicia Spencer.

Miesha Tate is offering some advice to the tougher generation of female fighters.

Miesha Tate is a veteran in the world of MMA. She recently has made a return to fighting after a short retirement. She has been in the UFC since 2013 and has been through it all. Now as a radio personality, Tate has the chance to speak out on news topics within the sport. Recently she caught some slack for her comments on fellow bantamweight Aspen Ladd and her relationship with her boyfriend/coach.

“It is, from my experience, generally problematic when a female fighter, especially younger, starts dating a coach,” she told The MMA Hour. “The more the age difference, the more they become, sort of, hooks in, claws deep, and they start to feel like they can rule your life. And that can happen even outside of fighting, but when you add that kind of dynamic to it as well, it can just be such an ugly situation. So I think it’s something we should definitely have conversations about, make people a little more aware that it doesn’t have to be that way.”

Tate is speaking from her own experience throughout her career. She was in a relationship for quite some time with former UFC fighter Bryan Caraway. Caraway also doubled as Tate’s coach through most of her UFC career. The two split since then and now Tate is dating another fighter named Johnny Nuñez who she has two children with.

“But a lot of times, I feel like women gravitate toward a male figure that’s in their life consistently and trying to help them. But once it becomes a relationship, things become so entangled and so intertwined, and it’s very difficult not only to separate your personal life from when you go into the gym but the gym from when you go home. That was my biggest problem was that the coach always came home. I lost the significant other if you will, and it just became this mental game — it was 24/7.”

Tate and Ladd have had a great deal of back and forth both arguing about Ladd’s recent botched weight cut. The two even planned to fight each other before it all went down. They could still find themselves across the cage from each other in the future.

Do you agree with Tate’s assessment of a fighter/coach relationship?

ONE Championship continues to make waves in the world of mixed martial arts as they announced via a press release that Miesha Tate will serve as the new Vice President.

The largest global sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has just announced that it has appointed former women’s mixed martial arts world champion Miesha Tate as Vice President of ONE Championship.

The news of Tate’s signing is just the latest in a string of high prifle signings for the Asian based promotion. Former UFC Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez signed a massive fight deal to come on board and that was followed by MMA’s first ever trade that sent Demetrious Johnson to ONE in exchange for Ben Askren.

ONE’s CEO Chatri Sityodting welcomed his new vice president via a tweet as the news broke:

Tate later released a statement of her own thanking her new boss and stating she is looking forward to relocating to Singapore.

“I am thrilled to join ONE Championship as a Vice President,” Tate stated. “I truly believe in its mission of unleashing real-life superheroes who ignite the world with hope, strength, dreams, and inspiration. I’m honored to bring my experience as a world champion and to help inspire the next generation of athletes. And of course, I am excited to relocate to my new home, Singapore, and travel throughout Asia.”

ONE Championship is back in action on Friday with “ONE Championship 83: Heart of the Lion,” which takes place at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
