Oscar De La Hoya is promising mixed martial arts (MMA) legends Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz the biggest paydays of their careers.

De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotion’s upcoming MMA event will be headlined by a trilogy bout between Liddell and Ortiz. This will be Liddell’s first fight since June of 2010. Also, Ortiz has been out-of-competition since January of last year.

Speaking to “The MMA Hour” recently, De La Hoya made a bold claim about Liddell and Oritz’s upcoming fight. He suggests it will be the biggest payday of their careers (via MMA Fighting):

“The message I want to send here is Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, this trilogy with this fight taking place, they’re gonna make the most money they’ve ever made in their entire careers,” De La Hoya said.

“It’s incredible. I’m actually mind blown by that, because I would have thought with Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell — with two names like that — they would have made a lot more money in their careers.”

As noted, Liddell hasn’t competed since June of 2010 when he was knocked out by Rich Franklin at UFC 115. The defeat marked the third-straight for Liddell at the time, before eventually deciding to retire.

Ortiz has won three of his last four fights, competing in all four under the Bellator MMA banner. He exited the UFC in 2012 after a three-fight losing streak.

Oscar De La Hoya teased promoting even more fights in the MMA world in a recent interview. This is after talking about his expectations for the trilogy fight between UFC Legends Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell that takes place later this month.

This event goes down on November 24, 2018, inside The Forum in Inglewood, California, and will air live on pay-per-view. You can check out the undercard here. According to the boxing promoter, the ticket sales for this event are strong.

“The price points are perfect for this type of fight. Fans are coming out and supporting it,” De La Hoya on Monday told MMAjunkie. “Everywhere I go, they don’t talk to me about the boxing cards I’m putting on. They talk about Canelo or Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.”

Although boxing will always be in the blood of De La Hoya, he is dipping his toes into the MMA water to see how it goes. Thus, at this time, he is still hesitant to go into MMA full-time. However, his recent deal with DAZN could change that.

“Once this fight card takes place, I’m going to have some serious talks with John Skipper,” De La Hoya said. “If I’m serious about promoting future MMA cards. I’m very positive and certain DAZN will back us 100 percent.”

De La Hoya’s Plan

Before he makes a bold statement about his future in the sport, he wants to sit back and see how this event goes involving the MMA stars. Then, he’ll evaluate what his future holds.

“I want to see how (Nov. 24) turns out. I want to see if the card turns out good. I want to see what the PPV numbers are. I want to see if Chuck and Tito were happy the way I promoted them. And then we’ll take it from there.”

Quote: McGregor Could ‘Easily’ Command Canelo-Like Money In Streaming Deal

If Conor McGregor was an independent contractor, he could “easily” demand Canelo-like money from a streaming deal.

Streaming deals for fighters, such as the one boxing middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez recently signed, are changing the game.

Recently, Alvarez signed the biggest contract in sports history – a broadcast deal with the DAZN streaming service. DAZN now has the rights to broadcast the Mexican star’s fights. The streaming service has taken the combat sports world by storm.

They’re affiliated with the likes of Alvarez, English boxing sensation Anthony Joshua, and Bellator MMA. There have even been talks for DAZN to sign former middleweight king Gennady Golovkin. If mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters had similar opportunities to that of boxers, they could stand to make a lot of money.

Take Conor McGregor for example. Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya, who helped land Canelo’s DAZN deal, spoke to Luke Thomas on “The MMA Hour” recently. He said that MMA fighters the caliber of McGregor could make Canelo-like money with a potential streaming deal (via MMA Fighting):

“That’s the beauty of being free agents,” said De La Hoya. “If you have somebody behind you who’s looking out for your best interests individually, absolutely — why not?

“There’s guys out there who are phenomenal, phenomenal fighters. That can have those types of deal. You take a look at Conor McGregor or you take a look at these fighters who are big, household names.

“Imagine if Conor McGregor was an independent contractor. He can easily get a deal like that on a DAZN or an ESPN+. But obviously they’re with UFC and UFC just works differently.”
