Rising women’s strawweight star Paige VanZant suffered another setback, dropping a first round submission loss to Michelle Waterson in the main event of last night’s (Dec. 17, 2016) UFC on FOX 22 from Sacramento, California. The loss marked the second of VanZant’s last three Octagon performances.

Despite this recent stretch, however, the young “12 Gauge” isn’t worried about her future:

“I was meant for the spotlight, and I’m going to continue to be in the spotlight,” VanZant said during the post-fight press conference. “I will be back, and I’m going to have the belt one day. I’m 22 years old. I have a long time, so I have the best team in the world. I’ll be back.”

VanZant faced off with a former Invicta champion in “The Karate Hottie” and it’s clear to say that her weakness was exploited in the fight:

“Michelle Waterson’s a really good fighter,” she said. “She used to be the atomweight champion for Invicta FC, so I know she’s going to go very, very far in this sport. I knew it was going to be a big test for me. Gotta work on my jiu-jitsu, apparently, so I’m going to do that.”

While the No. 7-ranked strawweight blames the loss on ‘not preparing’ her jiu-jitsu correctly, she also said that she simply got caught:

“I got caught tonight,” she said. “It happens. I’m not blaming any other outside factors, no matter what went on. I got caught, and it happens in this sport.”

“Before I fought Bec, I was supposed to be in a movie, and I turned it down because it was going to mess up my fight game. This just came down to not preparing my jiu-jitsu, and that’s it.”

Strawweight contenders Michelle Waterson and Paige VanZant are set to do battle in the main event of tomorrow night’s (Dec. 17, 2016) UFC on FOX 22 from Sacramento, California.

The No. 12-ranked Waterson hasn’t competed since July 2015 when she scored a submission victory in her Octagon debut. The No. 8-ranked VanZant, on the other hand, is 3-1 in the UFC, but “The Karate Hottie” doesn’t seem to be worried, as she feels as if she has ‘more skills’ than PVZ:

“I think she’s a very tough opponent, she’s very durable and that’s gotten her through a lot of her fights, just that desire to win. But when you meet somebody that has just as much desire to win then it becomes the battle of who has the most skills and I have more skills than she does,” Waterson said about VanZant when speaking to FOX Sports.

“I think I have better skill in every aspect of the fight.”

Waterson didn’t knock VanZant’s accomplishments, however, although she simply feels as if she’s the superior fighter:

“You can’t take away the wins she has. She’s earned those wins,” Waterson said. “She has a winning record so you can’t take that away from her but as far as levels go, I’m on a different level.”

“The Karate Hottie”, a former Invicta champion, has dealt with some injuries over the last year or so that have kept her out of action, but she’s now healthy and ready to return. In fact, she feels as if this is a comeback moment for her:

“It’s kind of a ‘I’m back’ moment for me,” Waterson said. “I’ve been in the gym, even through the injuries, I’ve been training everyday so for the people that train me and train with me and know me, they know I haven’t gone anywhere. But for anybody else that don’t know who I am, I’m happy to show them what I’ve learned.”

Do you expect Waterson to shine in her return or will VanZant continue her rise?
