Paul Craig Mike Perry sparring ex-girlfriend UFC BKFC

UFC light heavyweight contender, Paul Craig has revealed how former welterweight division contender, Mike Perry is to thank for his iconic weigh-ins during his time with the organization – recalling how a chance meeting with the Michigan native, which included him sparring his ex-girlfriend – led to him donning Scottish-themed face paint.

Craig, the current #10 ranked light heavyweight contender, will attempt to snap a two-fight losing run in his next Octagon outing – dropping consecutive losses to both Volkan Oezdemir, and most recently at UFC 283 in Brazil, a January knockout defeat to Johnny Walker.

As for Perry, the outspoken Flint native was recently booked to headline a BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) card against former UFC middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold in April – with UFC veterans, Chad Mendes, and former lightweight titleholder, Eddie Alvarez taking co-main event status.

Paul Craig recalls story of first meeting with UFC veteran, Mike Perry

Boasting a ground strikes TKO win over current undisputed light heavyweight champion, Jahamal Hill – claimed a chance encounter Perry is responsible for him painting his face with the Scotland national flag before UFC weigh-ins.

“He (Mike Perry) was in the gym, and he was there with – at the time his girlfriend, the blonde haired one,” Paul Craig told Morning Kombat during a recent interview. “And he was sparring with her, and I’m on the treadmill watching this guy, and I’m thinking, this guy is super intense. And he is pulling no punches against this chick. And his coach is watching, with his arms folded and he’s just watching, and he’s enjoying this. Just a battle of the sexes. And the men were definitely winning this.”

“…So Mike Perry then starts speaking to me, and he’s super nice,” Paul Craig continued. “And he’s like, ‘Are you Scottish?’ [And I say] ‘Aye’. ‘F*cking Braveheart? See, if I was you, I’d do the f*cking blue paint, man. And I’d – f*cking let’s go, Scotland.’ And I looked at my coach and I went, ‘That’s a f*cking brilliant idea’.”

2-0 since his transition to bare knuckle fighting, Perry has landed consecutive decision wins over The Ultimate Fighter alum, Julian Lane, as well as former Bellator MMA welterweight title challenger, Michael Page.

Paul Craig is the next fighter in line to try and halt the undefeated winning streak of super middleweight prospect, Bo Nickal.

Following Nickal’s third consecutive win and finish last time out against Cody Brundage at UFC 300, this is his biggest step up to date.

Craig may be coming off of two losses but they’ve come to two of the top fighters in the division right now in Brendan Allen and Caio Borralho.

With his lethal submission skills, “Bearjew” is a huge threat to anyone once the fight hits the floor, which makes this match-up against Nickal’s stellar wrestling pedigree even more interesting.

Paul Craig Says He Doesn’t Plan On Trying To Outwrestle Bo Nickal

Ahead of their meeting at UFC 309 in Madison Square Garden, Craig spoke about this fight in a recent YouTube video that was put up on his podcast (Leather’d Podcast) channel.

The Scotsman spoke about his expectations for this fight and how he is preparing to take on the 28-year-old that no one has been able to handle thus far.

Craig said that though working on his wrestling defense is obviously an important aspect of his training for this fight, he doesn’t want to become too focused on it because he isn’t going to suddenly be able to beat his opponent at his own game.

Instead, he believes that his key to victory in this fight is to win the contest in all other areas, rather than attempting to beat Nickal in a wrestling match.

“With someone like Bo Nickal, you’re not going to learn to wrestle like him within a fight camp so it’s wise to say that yep, I’m going to be working on these wrestling defenses but what I should be working on is good footwork, good striking and good grappling and that’s the keys to victory. We’re not going to outwrestle him, we’re going to out-MMA him.”

UFC light-heavyweight, Johnny Walker, set his sights high following last nights stoppage victory.

Walker would square of with jiu-jitsu ace Paul Craig as part of UFC 283, in a fight that was never going to go the distance. As Craig grabbed the single leg, Walker connected with several hard, straight shots that wobbled the Scot, before finishing the fight off with standing hammer-fists.

The victory marks walkers second stoppage victory in a row and first time that the Brazilian has strung a pair of wins together since early 2019. The 30-year-old seems to be gaining back some confidence after a rocky few years in the promotion, but talking with media, revealed that his dreams have not waivered.

Walker credited Daniel Cormier for his accomplishments, saying that he aspires to be as great as the American one day and claim titles in not one, but two weight classes.

He’s champ-champ – two belts. Come on. That’s my dream, as well, and this guy did it,” Walker said during the press conference. “I want to be on his level one day. I want to be a good wrestler, improve all of my skills, because I want to be there. I want to be ready to do what he did.

“I know it’s a huge thing to do. He’s a special fighter and a motivation not just for me, but everyone else. He’s a big, big motivation, and I want to do what he did.”

Johnny Walker talks big win

Prior to the bout, Craig was ranked No.9 in the division and his recent form had seen him capture wins over some impressive names. Walker attributed the win to his progression as a fighter and admitted it was something that he should be proud of.

This guy just finished Jamahal Hill, [Magomed] Ankalaev, and I just finished him,” Walker said. “I know MMA is different because games don’t fit each other’s games. But I think this means something.

I finished a guy in the top 10 in the first round, and this guy already fought three rounds with Ankalaev and finished Hill in the first hound, and then I finished him. It shows I’m getting better, and my evolution keeps going on. Every fight, I get a better fighter.” (H/T MMAJunkie)

Paul Craig has welcomed the opportunity to face fellow light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith at the UFC’s upcoming pay-per-view in London.

Paul Craig returns to action later this month at UFC 283. The Scottish grappling wizard had been tasked with taking on native Brazilian, Johnny Walker, in his homeland when the promotion heads to South America for their first pay-per-view event of the year.

The 35-year-old will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing final outing in 2022 where he dropped a unanimous decision to Volkan Oezdemir at UFC London.

Meanwhile, his opponent, Johnny Walker, will be looking to claim back-to-back victories for the first time since 2019 after he closed his 2022 out with a submission victory over Ion Cutelaba at UFC 279.

You can expect an all-out war when these two men step inside the octagon at the UFC 283, The two hold a combined 47 professional outings so far in their respective careers which have only required the judges’ influence on five occasions,

Should Craig emerge victorious out in Brazil, ‘Bearjew’ already has his sights set on his next opponent after he called for a matchup with former light-heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith.

Paul Craig Calls For Anthony Smith at UFC 286

Speaking in an interview with Michael Bisping, Craig explained his interest in the matchup and why he is so eager to take on the currently ranked 6th 205-pound contender.

“Anthony Smith is already in a camp. So potentially could be Anthony Smith in London. That would be a pretty good fight in London.”

Craig continued, “He’s obviously come out and said that he wanted to fight me after one of his press conferences. I think it’s a tough and fun fight. Two high-level Jiu-Jitsu guys kind of staying with each other, that just turns into this rock em’ sock em’ robot fighting. I think that is how it’s going to go and I’m also looking for a challenge, I’d like to have that title of being the jiu-jitsu guy at light-heavyweight.”

Anthony Smith has already revealed he is almost certainly guaranteed an outing in March and having expressed an interest in facing Paul Craig the UFC matchmakers should have a very easy decision to get these two men paired up.
