Sean Strickland Paulo Costa

US-born UFC fighter Sean Strickland is not impressed with Paulo Costa’s actions.

Paulo Costa is on the final fight of his UFC contract but is struggling to come to an agreement with the organization. The Brazilian athlete was booked against former titleholder Robert Whittaker but this bout appears to be canceled. Costa has even teased a move to professional boxing rather than work with the UFC.

Pair this with Costa’s weight struggles in prior bouts in the middleweight division and you get a pissed-off Sean Strickland.

Sean Strickland pissed off at Paulo Costa

Sean Strickland will fill in as a late replacement for this weekend’s UFC Fight Night Main event. The top-ten ranked fighter just faced Jared Cannonier in December, and will now be fighting again on January 14 against Nassourdine Imavov.

Discussing his middleweight contemporary Paulo Costa, Strickland said:

“Here’s the thing about Costa, and I like Costa, but he is also a f*ckhead. He doesn’t make weight, he’s an idiot, so it’s like, when you’re a f*ckhead and you go to the UFC and you say, ‘Hey, I want to do this.”

On the weight issues Costa previously had, Strickland said:

“I almost fought Marvin Vettori on a two-day notice because his b*tch ass wouldn’t make weight. So it’s hard when you don’t do the right things, it’s hard to get the right things back.”

With the Brazilian’s ongoing contract issues with the UFC, Strickland remarked:

You don’t act like a professional, you don’t get treated like a professional.” [Transcript courtesy of MMAJunkie]

Daniel Cormier believes Khamzat Chimaev could be Paulo Costa’s ticket to higher payday

Former UFC two-division champion Daniel Cormier has recently gone on record stating that UFC middleweight contender Paulo Costa could get more leverage for a higher paying contract with a win over Khamzat Chimaev.

Costa has a single fight left on his UFC contract, but he doesn’t seem too keen on finishing it due to the purse he’d receive.

Cormier stated the following on his podcast, DC & RC: “Paulo Costa is about done with his UFC contract. The UFC will give you a fight to make you prove why we should pay you if you’re at the end because if Paulo Costa goes and beats Khamzat Chimaev, he might get anything he wants. So for him, it makes sense.

“But if he gets beat and wiped out, now what?

“That bargaining power is a little bit less. Do you still kind of move the needle a little bit? Yeah. But imagine how much you would move the needle if you’re the first guy to beat Khamzat Chimaev and hopefully beat him impressively. Then, you hold all the chips. When I say chips, I mean the dollars, baby.”

Paulo Costa was slated to face former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 284 on February 12, 2023. However, Costa withdrew from the bout due to negotiations with the promotion going south. He was offered $70,000 to show, and another $70,000 to win.

The problem with this is that, even with win, and even with a Performance of the Night bonus, Costa would still pocket less than a quarter-million dollars to fight the no. 1 contender, one of the most dangerous men on planet earth.

But, Costa doesn’t boast a single win over anyone currently in the UFC, though he has two world champions under his win column, and another is fighting for the Bellator light-heavyweight championship soon. Also, the shenanigans he pulled against Marvin Vettori didn’t help his cause any.

Still, you’d think the UFC would renew his contract in hopes of keeping a stellar match up together.

What do you think, should Paulo Costa get a higher purse to fight either Khamzat Chimaev or Robert Whittaker?

Former UFC middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has poked fun at undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev’s claims that he is finding it difficult to find an opponent of a March comeback, labelling the Chechen as a “gourmet” again in another barb fired.

Chimaev, the current #3 ranked welterweight contender, has yet to return to the Octagon since he co-headlined UFC 279 earlier this year, securing a first round D’Arce choke win over Kevin Holland.

The AllStars MMA staple was scheduled to headline the event against Nate Diaz, however, he tipped the welterweight scales by a whopping seven and a half pounds, forcing his eventual catchweight fight with Riverside striker, Holland.

Recently, Chimaev, who improved to 12-0 with his win over Holland, announced his intentions to score a March Octagon return at UFC 285 next year, however, insisted he was fruitless in his search for a willing dance partner.

“Nobody wants to fight,” Khamzat Chimaev said. “F*ck these boys. They gave me four different countries, four different opponents. Nobody wants to fight – I just want to fight. Give me somebody. If the guys run away from me, just give me somebody. I’m ready.”

Paulo Costa hits out at the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev

Poking fun at Chimaev’s claims, Belo Horizonte native, Paulo Costa, who is currently embroiled in a public contract spat with the UFC, doubted his fruitless attempt to land a March fight.

“Does anyone still believe these (sic) bullsh*ts??” Paulo Costa posted on Instagram. “Gourmet.”

Also launching a barb at the unbeaten, Chimaev, welterweight contender, Belal Muhammad claimed the former likely called for fights with a host of promotional veterans and fighters not currently under the banner of the UFC.

“The four opponents that said no were Nick Diaz, Tony Ferguson, Brett Hart, and Chris Leben.”

Expected to likely land himself a shot at UFC welterweight gold with another solitary win, Chimaev has been linked with a potential return against former interim titleholder, Colby Covington, however, the bout has yet to materialize.
