Paulo Costa confirms fight with Khamzat Chimaev in the works for UFC 294 in October

One-time middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has confirmed a fight between himself and undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev, is currently targeted for UFC 294 on October 21. in Abu Dhabi, UAE – claiming he’s confident the long-awaited pairing finally takes place.

Costa, the current #5 ranked middleweight contender, has been sidelined since August of last year, featuring most recently on the main card of UFC 278, defeating former undisputed titleholder, Luke Rockhold in a close, unanimous decision victory.

As for Chimaev, the AllStars MMA staple managed to improve to 12-0 as a professional back in September at UFC 279, defeating recent winner, Kevin Holland in a dominant, opening round D’Arce choke submission success.

Linked with a potential return as soon as May to draft into a co-main event slot – which is now occupied by Gilbert Burns, and Belal Muhammad – the UFC had reportedly offered Costa a light heavyweight fight former undisputed titleholder, Jan Blachowicz.

Paulo Costa confident October fight with Khamzat Chimaev takes place

With the heralded fight between the duo failing to come to fruition, Costa claimed the UFC were attempting to book him in a fight against the undefeated, Chimaev for a UFC 294 pay-per-view event in October on ‘Fight Island’ at the Etihad Arena.

“I think October is so long – so far,” Paulo Costa said of a fight with Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 during an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. “That’s why I was so happy when the UFC wanted me to fight Jan (Blachowicz) at 205 [pounds]. Because it’s much less work to cut weight, you know? And this doesn’t effect my weight division at 185 [pounds]. So, I was sad when Jan declined.”

“I think this fight (with Khamzat Chimaev) is gonna happen,” Paulo Costa explained. “I’m bothering the UFC to schedule a fight before [October] – like in June. I think they [the UFC]  have some agreement with Abu Dhabi or Dubai government, so they need to push a big fight for there.”

Jan Blachowicz claims Paulo Costa was drunk when he offered to fight him at UFC 288

Jan Blachowicz claims that Paulo Costa turned down the opportunity to fight him at UFC 288.

In an attempt to add to the UFC 288 card, which was not the strongest, it appears that the UFC attempted to make Paulo Costa Vs. Jan Blachowicz. However, according to Blachowicz, this matchup did happen due to the Brazilian turning it down.

Talking to Lowking, a Polish MMA outlet, he said that last Friday, he was presented the fight by the UFC – he accepted – but Costa did not

“Friday afternoon, the question comes if I want to fight Costa,” said Blachowicz. “I say, ‘One moment, one moment,’ because in my case it meant a very strong reorganization of my life. I had to really do a lot. If he had agreed at that moment, as I agreed, because I agreed to this fight, I would already be in the States by now. I’d already be there, I’d be training, I’d be catching the vibe.

“I reorganized the lives of people who were supposed to fly with me, myself, my manager Dorota,” he continued. “I had to do a lot. The kid, her, the people around me. And I managed to do it. I say, ‘Okay, but now let the dollars do the talking.’ That was Dorothy’s job. Let the dollars do the talking if we take the fight. Dollars have also spoken. I say, ‘Hey, adventure!’ I feel good, I’m in training. It’s OK, we’re taking this fight, why not.”

Paulo Costa turns down Jan Blachowicz fight

However, Sunday night would roll around and according to Blachowicz, this is when he received news that Costa had turned down the fight.

“Sunday, probably evening, I’m starting to go to bed, Dorota comes in and says that Costa does not want this fight. So, I cancelled everything, people went back to their ways of life again. And now he’s screaming something on the Internet again that he wants to fight me. I don’t quite understand his train of thought.” Blachowicz said.

“I don’t know if he was drunk, at that moment he sobered up and he lost his vision? I don’t know what’s in his head. I’m not sitting there. Weird dude, weird type. There will be no more of this fight.” (H/T MMAMania)

Jan Blachowicz claims Paulo Costa rejected UFC 288 fight how much juice does he need

Former champion Jan Blachowicz has claimed he was offered a fight with Brazillian brawler Paulo Costa, only for “Borachina” to turn it down.

The former king of the 205lb division, who hails from Poland, has been without a fight since his uninspiring draw against Magomed Ankalaev. Blachowicz has set off the rumor mill about a potential switch to 185lbs, believing he can once again be the man to stop current number one Israel Adesanya, who he holds a victory over at 205lbs.

As a welcome to the division, he was apparently offered the withholder of the “Secret Juice”, Paulo Costa. Jan Blachowicz alleges though that Costa wanted no part of “Polish Power”, turning down the offer.

Jan Blachowicz goes off on Costa

Jan Blachowicz

Jan Blachowicz took to Twitter to vent his frustrations at the situation, saying :

“So a few days ago [Paulo Costa] got offered to fight me,” Blachowicz began. “I’ve said YES, he said – NO. The fight is OFF. How much juice does he need? 1 bottle of wine is enough to knock out this guy.”

Paulo Costa last fought in a grueling affair with the bare-knuckle-bound Luke Rockhold. The Brazillian took home the points victory and has been matched up with everyone from Khamzat Chimaev to Sean Strickland since if Costa himself were to be believed.

On Costa’s end, there is nothing but rumors surrounding his name, and if deciphering his tweet correctly, it would appear he is mainly interested in Khamzat Chimaev, with whom Costa nearly fought in a gym a few months back whilst training his ground game with Jake Shields. Even though it would initially be Costa calling out Jan Blachowicz, his mind now seems firmly elsewhere.

“There is not only rumors guyZ,” Costa replied. “Hunter Campbell has called, I think both sides has agreed. Let’s set the details. There is eventual moving up, I could make 185 without issues. Gourmet chenchen only can fight in October in Dubai so it’s fine.”

One-time middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has offered to return in just over two weeks’ time at UFC 288 in the opening week of May – in a light heavyweight return against former division champion, Jan Blachowicz.

Costa, the current #5 ranked middleweight contender, has been sidelined since he featured on the main card of UFC 278 back in August of last year against former undisputed UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold.

Snapping a two-fight losing streak against both Israel Adesanya, and Marvin Vettori, Brazilian contender, Paulo Costa managed to land a unanimous decision triumph over Rockhold.

Penning terms on a new, multi-fight deal with the UFC last month, Costa – who was expected to fight former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker at UFC 284 in February, saw a potential rebooked fight with the latter shot down recently

Earlier this month, UFC 288 lost it’s scheduled lightweight co-main event between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush, due to a minor injury on the Brazilian’s side – leading to Gilbert Burns offering to fight former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier at the welterweight limit

Paulo Costa offers to fight Jan Blachowicz on short notice at UFC 288

Furthermore, Belo Horizonte native, Costa has now offered to fight in May at UFC 288, issuing an open challenge to Polish veteran and former light heavyweight champion, Blachowicz.

“May 6. PPV event (UFC 288) is in trouble,” Paulo Costa tweeted. “Jan Blachowicz vs. Costa could be the salvation. I go up (to) 205 (pounds) on all juice. Let me know @ufc.”

As for Blachowicz, the former undisputed light heavyweight champion has been sidelined since his majority decision draw against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 282 last December in the pair’s vacant championship fight.

Off the back of the above-mentioned, Adesanya’s middleweight title reclamation at UFC 287 earlier this month, Blachowicz offered to drop to the middleweight limit to fight his former-foe in a championship rematch

Robert Whittaker rules out Paulo Costa fight ahead of targeted July UFC return

Robert Whittaker has ruled out a potential matchup with Paulo Costa.

‘The Reaper’ has no interest in rebooking a showdown between the two top ten middleweight contenders after Costa pulled out of their previously scheduled scrap while undergoing contract negotiations with the promotion. Since then, ‘The Eraser’ has reportedly re-signed with the promotion and is expected to make upwards of $1 million per fight going forward. Who he faces inside the Octagon next is anyone’s guess, but it’s safe to say that you can rule out Robert Whittaker.

Appearing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, ‘The Reaper’ revealed that he has no interest in attempting to book another date with Costa after the secret juice-drinking Brazilian backed out not once, but twice.

“Costa upset me. I’m not fighting him because this is the second time I was supposed to fight him and he pulled out,” Whittaker said. “And it just mucks everything up. I have to do a whole camp. I make expenses and costs and everything like that to get to a point where he pulls away. This is the second time he’s done it. I want a fight that’s going to happen. I want a sure thing.”

Prior to being booked for UFC 284 in February, Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa were slated for an April 2021 meeting. ‘The Eraser’ withdrew due to an illness.

Robert Whittaker Says Khamzat Chimaev Should Earn the Opportunity to Fight a Top Five Fighter at Middleweight

Paulo Costa wasn’t the only potential opponent that Robert Whittaker ruled out during his conversation with Ariel Helwani. Asked about a potential fight with Khamzat Chimaev, ‘The Reaper’ suggested that the undefeated Chechen monster should go get a few wins inside the division before being rewarded with a top-five opponent.

“Chimaev, he’s not in the division’s rankings. I’m not a huge fan of guys just sliding in and fighting wherever they want. It’s a different place. The rankings are there for a reason. I like fighting top five guys. That’s just where I’m at. I like fighting top five guys because they’re the best of the best. They’ve earned and worked their way through the division to get there. It’s so much harder to work your way through a division than to slide in at the top.

“If you have one fight or two fights and you get to fight… Like [Alex] Pereira. There are a lot of dudes in the top twenty of the middleweight division that’ll give Pereira a hard time. Much more of a hard time than Israel [Adesanya] and that’s the truth. You know that and everyone else knows that. There are some dudes in there that’ll give him a nightmarish run for his money and that isn’t for a title.

“That’s just about the case for everybody. That’s why I like these guys that are in the top five. They worked their way up, much like I did. Work your way up, and you beat all these contenders. I like that. It’s a system we have and should be respected.”

With Paulo Costa and Khamzat Chimaev seemingly off the table, who would you like to see Robert Whittaker face in his next Octagon appearance?

Alex Pereira offers to fight Paulo Costa next after UFC 287

Ahead of UFC 287 this weekend, undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira has voiced his interest in a potential future title outing against fellow Brazilian powerhouse, Paulo Costa, however, is less than interested in fighting the undefeated welterweight force, Khamzat Chimaev.

Headlining this Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Miami, Florida – Sao Paulo striker, Pereira is set to take on former undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya in an immediate championship rematch.

Clinching divisional gold back in November of last year at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden, Pereira managed to win the undisputed middleweight title inside just four fights, stopping arch-rival, Adesanya with a stunning fifth round rallying TKO victory over the City Kickboxing staple at the Octagon fence.

Alex Pereira offers to take on fellow Brazilian, Paulo Costa next

Booked to headline UFC 287 this weekend in an immediate title re-run with the Nigerian-Kiwi – Pereira has knocked back a potential fight with the aforenoted, Chimaev, however, welcomes the opportunity to fight the likes of former undisputed titleholder, Robert Whittaker, as well as Belo Horizonte native and #5 ranked contender, Costa next, instead.

“This week, I’m obviously focused on Israel (Adesanya), but talk about [Robert] Whittaker, and Paulo Costa,” Alex Pereira told assembled media during his availability on Wednesday. “I know they want to fight me. They were never disrespectful. They always kept their composure, but when you talk about [Khamzat] Chimaev, he’s the kind of guy that seems to be a little lost, he talks too much.”

“Right after my last fight, he said that he wanted to fight me at this weight class,” Alex Pereira said. “He knows it was right after the fight, everybody’s injured. I could not make that weight so I challenged him to a fight at 205 [pounds]. He ran. To be honest, if it’s Whittaker or Paulo Costa, if the organization wants to put us to fight, it’s my job to fight as UFC champion, but I don’t even want to talk about Chimaev.”

Rebounding to the winner’s enclosure back in August of last year at UFC 278, Costa, who recently inked a reportedly lucrative contract with the promotion, turned in a unanimous decision win over former undisputed middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold in Salt Lake City, Utah.
