Paulo Costa fired the first volley with:

“Hey Red N @SStricklandMMA we let’s fight or what?”

Sean Strickland responded:

“[Paulo Costa] is becoming the [Dillon Danis] of UFC……..

Brazil’s ‘Borrachinha’ responded with an accusation:

“Ufc chief businessman said you’re not willing to fight. Ask him yourself what it means.”

Lastly, the US-born Sean Strickland said he throw down against Costa for free. Strickland said:

“Lmao man I’d fight you in the cage for money and I’d fight you in the parking lot for free…… Luke gave you a hard fight. He doesn’t even qualify as a training partner for me…….”

Sean Strickland vs Paulo Costa

Both Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa are ranked in the top ten in the UFC’s middleweight division. US-born Strickland has been a staple of the organization since his first bout in 2014. Most recently he is coming off a victory over Nassourdine Imavov in January of this year. He also has notable wins over Jack Hermansson, Uriah Hall, and Krzysztof Jotko, among others.

Brazil’s Paulo Costa has been in contract turbulence with the UFC and was supposed to be facing Robbert Whittaker last month but the bout fell through. Most recently, he went to war against former middleweight king Luke Rockhold in August of 2022. Costa was a one-time contender in a losing bid against Israel Adesanya and is a red wine enthusiast.

Fans are eagerly awaiting to see what the future of Paulo Costa may be.

One-time UFC middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa has called for a fight at the middleweight limit against fellow division contender, Sean Strickland next – confirming how he hopes to land a fight in the coming weeks.

Costa, the current #6 ranked division challenger, was targeted to fight former undisputed champion, Robert Whittaker at UFC 284 earlier this month in Perth, Australia – however, confirmed how he would not be penning a bout agreement to fight the former titleholder.

Last time out, the Belo Horizonte native featured on the main card of UFC 278 last August against former undisputed champion, Luke Rockhold landing a unanimous decision victory over the veteran Californian.

The victory returned Costa to the winner’s enclosure following a pair of losses against former champion, Israel Adesanya, and Marvin Vettori – the second of which in an impromptu light heavyweight showdown.

Claiming he wants to land a fight within the next “couple of weeks”, Costa followed suit and called for a fight with recent victor, Sean Strickland – who is fresh from a January decision win over Nassourdine Imavov.

“I want fight this most wise and nicely red neck in UFC middleweight,” Paulo Costa tweeted, accompanied by a picture of Sean Strickland. “I’m trying it for couple weeks. Please release himmmmm and secret juice gonna be very well promoted nextt (sic).”

14-2 as a professional, Costa, who featured previously on The Ultimate Fighter, holds other professional wins over former middleweight title challenger, Yoel Romero, as well as former undisputed welterweight champion, Johny Hendricks, and the likes of Uriah Hall, and Oluwale Bamgbose.

Back in September 2020, Costa headlined UFC 253 in Abu Dhabi, UAE against then-undisputed middleweight champion, Adesanya, suffering his first professional loss in the form of a second round TKO.

Former UFC middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold plans on testing out free agency in a bid to return to competition.

Following his inspiring performance against Brazilian brawler Paulo Costa last October, it seemed the fitting time for Rockhold to call it a career. However, the 38-year-old recently announced on the MMA Hour that he would be ending his retirement and was in the search for a new promotional home.

Your man’s a free agent,” Rockhold said to Ariel Helwani. “Free and clear, and I’m ready and re-inspired to go out there and do something new.”

I need a new setting,” he continued. “I need a new challenge. … You get burned out in the game when you’ve done so much, and you need new obstacles.”

Rockhold confirmed that he would be open to anything and would even consider a move over to boxing, maybe even taking on a YouTuber.

That door is always open, but I want to go and f**k some people up,” Rockhold said, later adding. “If you want bulls***, we can go box, beat up these YouTubers, too.” (H/T MMAFighting)

Luke Rockhold returns to combat sports

Rockhold’s last bout saw him battle through exhaustion and pain, rallying from the brink of being stopped several times, even hurting and stunning the raging Costa. While in a losing effort, Rockhold showed heart, earning the respect of many after being characterised as a somewhat unsavoury figure throughout his career.

Before this, Rockhold last win came back in 2017, in what was his comeback fight against David Branch after being dethroned by Michael Bisping.

Wherever Rockhold does turn up, hopefully the American can enjoy some success once again, as there are many fun and intriguing matchups available for him . It’s undeniable that Rockhold possess still the technical ability and raw athletic ability to still be a live threat.

US-born UFC fighter Sean Strickland is not impressed with Paulo Costa’s actions.

Paulo Costa is on the final fight of his UFC contract but is struggling to come to an agreement with the organization. The Brazilian athlete was booked against former titleholder Robert Whittaker but this bout appears to be canceled. Costa has even teased a move to professional boxing rather than work with the UFC.

Pair this with Costa’s weight struggles in prior bouts in the middleweight division and you get a pissed-off Sean Strickland.

Sean Strickland pissed off at Paulo Costa

Sean Strickland will fill in as a late replacement for this weekend’s UFC Fight Night Main event. The top-ten ranked fighter just faced Jared Cannonier in December, and will now be fighting again on January 14 against Nassourdine Imavov.

Discussing his middleweight contemporary Paulo Costa, Strickland said:

“Here’s the thing about Costa, and I like Costa, but he is also a f*ckhead. He doesn’t make weight, he’s an idiot, so it’s like, when you’re a f*ckhead and you go to the UFC and you say, ‘Hey, I want to do this.”

On the weight issues Costa previously had, Strickland said:

“I almost fought Marvin Vettori on a two-day notice because his b*tch ass wouldn’t make weight. So it’s hard when you don’t do the right things, it’s hard to get the right things back.”

With the Brazilian’s ongoing contract issues with the UFC, Strickland remarked:

You don’t act like a professional, you don’t get treated like a professional.” [Transcript courtesy of MMAJunkie]
