Paulo Costa is looking to get straight back into title contention by taking on former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker who is fresh off another big win at UFC 254 this past weekend.

Costa suffered his first career loss at the hands of Israel Adesanya late last month. The Brazilian knockout artist was seen by many as a true test for ‘Stylebender’ who made his second defence of the 185lb title he took from Whittaker.

On the night Adesanya made it look easy, taking out Costa inside two rounds and adding to Costa’s shame with his post-fight celebrations. ‘Borrachinha’ has spent lots of time campaigning for a rematch with Adesanya post-fight but now seems to have abandoned that idea, switching his attention to ‘The Reaper’

Whittaker scored an impressive unanimous decision win over Jared Cannonier in Abu Dhabi on Saturday to cement his place as the number one contender middleweight contender. The Aussie got his second straight wins against ‘The Killa Gorilla’ after previously beating Englishman Darren Till on Yas Island earlier this year to bounce back from his crushing defeat to Adesanya in 2019.

UFC President Dana White seemed keen to see Whittaker rematch Adesanya after the Ultimate Fighter winner impressed in a second straight fight. However, Costa has other ideas and would like to face off against Whittaker before he gets another shot at ‘Stylebender’.

“Hey Robert Whittaker enjoy your end of year, you deserved. When you come back we can do amazing fight,” Costa wrote on social media.

Whittaker is due to take some well deserved time off from fighting as he prepares to welcome another child later this year. It appears when he does eventually return to the Octagon ‘The Reaper’ will have plenty of big-name opponents to choose from.

Israel Adesanya Doesn’t Expect Costa Rematch: ‘I Don’t Think I Ever See Him Again’

Israel Adesanya

UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya doesn’t expect to ever run it back with Brazilian knockout artist Paulo Costa.

‘Stylebender’ eased by Costa in the UFC 253 main event last month. The 185lb king needed just two rounds to pick up the win and defend his title for the second time. Since the fight, Costa has been angrily pursuing a rematch but Adesanya doubts it will ever come to fruition and advised his rival to let it go.

“I don’t think I ever see him again to be honest,” Adesanya told MMA Fighting. “I think this is going to be like Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo. He has to let it go. I’ve done it to him. I’ve embarrassed him. He just has to accept it and realize ‘my mouth wrote checks my ass couldn’t cash and Israel likes to collect.’ It happened and let it go. So that’s my advice to him cause that’s what I did.”

Adesanya went on to talk about his approach to suffering losses during his career, namely his KO defeat to Alex Pereira. He advised Costa to adopt a similar mindset if he wants to keep evolving as a fighter.

“Even [if] I knock him [Pereira] out if he comes to the UFC, it’s never going to erase what happened,” Adesanya said. “It already happened. You just have to accept it and move on, which is the advice I give Paulo. You’re never going to get this one back. If by some crazy miracle or work ethic he does come up in the rankings again, he can’t unf*ck himself, you know what I mean?

“I never really looked to go chase any losses that I’ve had back,” Adesanya explained. “I’ve gotten a few back in the past but that’s just cause they came up and I was like right, this is my chance at redemption but I’m fine with where I’m at. So he has to be all right with where he’s at and move on.”

Do you think we will ever see Israel Adesanya vs. Paulo Costa II?

The soon to return light-heavyweight knockout artist, Anthony Johnson has landed a concussive blow to middleweight contender Paulo Costa via social media. ‘Rumble’ who is due to return to the Octagon in 2021 was critical of Costa in the aftermath of UFC 253. The 36-year-old ripped the Brazilian for his attitude before, during, and after his fight against Israel Adesanya, he said.

“Stylebender was serious, Costa came in thinking that he’s just a white belt, he’s nothing, he’s skinny,” Johnson continued. “Hey, being skinny has its advantages, dude. I don’t understand all of a sudden either why Costa is getting so upset after he saw what Stylebender did to him, you know? I was like ‘Dude, you were the one talking so much and then he gets you at the end and now you mad? Because he embarrassed you? Come on man, grow some balls. Man up to that.’ It is what it is. You can’t demand a rematch either after a performance like that either. That’s not smart. That’s not gonna sell for sure.”

Two weeks later and Costa has responded to Johnson, telling him to shut up and taking jabs at his frequent weight changes.

“Anthony Rumble Johnson shut up moron you even don’t know which weight class you should fight,” Costa wrote on social media.

‘Rumble’ quickly fired back at Costa, mocking the middleweight contender about the humping celebration he is so made about and warning Costa that he isn’t someone to attack online.

“I don’t do the talking back and forth but the last BBC you did that to fucked your ass at the end DOGGY STYLE. Now your name is LOOSE BOOTY You must want missionary next by me? I respect you but make sure you know your role… I’m not the 1 kid,” Johnson wrote on Twitter.
