Brazilian knockout artist Brunno Ferreira got back into the win column with a highlight-reel-worthy knockout of Phil Hawes at UFC Vegas 84.
Looking to bounce back from his first career loss against Nursulton Ruziboev over the summer, Ferreira delivered a spectacularly brutal finish in his main card clash with Phil Hawes on Saturday night. Tagging ‘No Hype’ with a solid flying knee, Ferreira has his opponent clearly compromised, but that didn’t stop Hawes from moving forward and attempting to keep things competitive.
With less than 10 seconds to go in the opening round, ‘The Hulk’ uncorked a straight left that caught Hawes on the temple, sending him crashing to the canvas. Ferreira followed that up with three uncontested blows on the ground before the referee stepped in to call for the stoppage.
Official Result: Brunno Ferreira def. Phil Hawes via KO (straight left to ground and pound) at 4:55 of Round 1.

On Saturday night at UFC Austin, things took a turn for the weird when winning fighter Phil Hawes started yelling at Cormier when it came time for his post-fight interview.
Inside the Octagon, Hawes began to call out to Cormier and began to show anger towards him. To this end, Cormier seemed confused and was able to de-escalate the situation. Now several days removed from the incident, Cormier is explaining what transpired and why he believes Hawes was so mad at him.
“I step into the Octagon and Phil is doing something that we call in Louisiana, ‘Booting up.’ This dude’s booting up on me,” he said on his YouTube channel (via MMA Fighting.) “Phil’s like this, ‘What’s up, man? What’s up?’ And I was like, what is going on? He’s booting up on me. So I’m like, ‘Me?’ to Phil. And Phil’s kind of telling me that I picked the wrong opponent. Well, if you want to know where that stems from, here it is. I’ll tell you exactly what it stems from.”
Cormier went on to explain a meeting between himself and Hawes in Abu Dhabi. He explained that Hawes was looking to join Cormier at his gym AKA but then was matched up with Deron Winn, a close friend and training partner of Cormier’s.
“I said ‘no’ to the fight,” Cormier explained. “I didn’t think it was a great fight and obviously look at what played out. It’s not like I was wrong in my thought in regards to the matchup. So Phil is saying I picked the wrong opponent. So I say to Phil, ‘Do you think I pick fights? Do you think I make the fights?’ I go, ‘Phil, that’s ridiculous. I don’t make the fights, my friend. Be respectful. Be respectful.’”
Hawes backed down from Cormier while still inside the cage and did apologize. To this end, he gained Cormier’s respect.
“Phil being the great guy that he is, he immediately gets that. Phil’s not a bad guy, that’s what people don’t understand. I hold no ill will towards Phil Hawes for last weekend. He’s high on adrenaline, he had the best performance of his entire career,” he said. “He feels like King Kong, he feels great out there, he’s hyped up, he’s got this idea — probably something that has motivated him throughout the entire camp — to go and put me in my place because I picked him as Deron’s opponent. The reality is I didn’t do that.”

Former UFC star Chael Sonnen believes it’s a good thing that middleweight Phil Hawes chose to de-escalate his Octagon exchange with Daniel Cormier this past weekend.
Saturday’s UFC Austin card brought fans a lot of things, from a host of knockouts and exciting finishes to impressive debuts and an entertaining main event. But beyond the action, one moment caught the attention of viewers.
On the preliminary card, Cormier, who was on color commentary duty inside the Moody Center, witnessed his protégé Deron Winn suffer a dominant and devastating TKO loss to Hawes.
During a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen became the latest to give his take on the matter. And despite the fact he initiated the exchange, the 45-year-old believes that Hawes actually left it looking good.
“One of the high moments over the card that we got to see Saturday was drama between Phil Hawes and Daniel Cormier… Phil Hawes, not only was right, he was perfect,” said Sonnen. “Phil was right for being wrong. He had to be wrong first. But you wanna know who looked good in that story? It was Phil, and I really hope you guys see it that way.”
Sonnen went on to suggest that Hawes is owed some leeway given the fact he was riding high on adrenaline at the time following an impressive victory. But while the 185lber quickly settled down and took Cormier’s advice, Sonnen questioned what would have happened if he’d done the opposite and turned the altercation physical.
“Daniel knew how to come to a young athlete. What would have happened if Phil hadn’t been so gracious?” Sonnen asked. “Don’t forget guys, Phil was high, Phil was out of his mind, he was drunk, Phil was under the influence, he was intoxicated. This is a natural high, an endorsement and an adrenaline release.
“So, when I tell you that Hawes, first off, deserves a bit of understanding, he was out of his mind. He was out of his mind with excitement that he earned, so go a little easy on Hawes. But when he came at Daniel, what if — ’cause Daniel didn’t back away did he? His face went real straight,” Sonnen continued. “Daniel did not like that. Daniel did not like being spoke that way… What if Phil would have swung on him?”
Sonnen: Hawes’ Apology Took “Character”
Fortunately, the retired former two-division titleholder wasn’t required to make a sudden return to Octagon action, and the pair completed the post-fight interview cordially.
According to Sonnen, Hawes’ decision to do that, and reiterate his apology again following the incident, took “character,” and was something he appreciated from the 33-year-old New Jersey native.
“Phil spoke that language and Phil stopped, and Phil was right,” said Sonnen. “He said it again (at the press conference). He was like, ‘I apologize. That is the two-time champion of the world, I was wrong.’ Perfect. That took character, it did…. He came back to (his senses) quickly, he stood on it… He apologized. Phil was right. I appreciated it.”

Following a loss, we often see fighters release solemn statements apologizing for their performance, blaming weight cuts, or describing how bad their camp was, not Deron Winn.
This past Saturday saw him face Phil Hawes, a bout that was almost a year in the making, with it first being booked in July of last year.
Unfortunately for Winn, Hawes was on fire and produced an incredible performance, stopping Winn in the second round, and earning himself a performance of the night bonus.
Winn would suffer a broken orbital bone and was badly beaten when the fight was eventually stopped but just days after took the time to voice over the highlights to his latest bout.
What’s Next For Deron Winn?
The loss now leaves the former collegiate wrestler with a record of 7-3 and with such a severe injury like a broken orbital bone, we may not see Winn back in action for a while.
But, if Winn continues to show the heart that he did while also engaging the fans with content like this, the American Kickboxing Academy product will have many waiting on his return.

Phil Hawes has issued an apology to Daniel Cormier after the two men were involved in an altercation at UFC Austin.
This past Saturday, Phil Hawes took on Deron Winn in a middleweight contest at UFC Austin. Hawes put in a dominant performance to score a standing TKO victory in round two following multiple knockdowns and consecutive elbow strikes to slice his opponent. As good as a showing that was, Hawes proceeded to land himself in hot water with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier.
Phil Hawes apologizes to Daniel Cormier for the verbal altercation
Following the victory, a heated Hawes would initiate an argument with Cormier that would turn into a back-and-forth verbal altercation. Hawes had said that Cormier “picked the wrong pony”, claiming the former two-division champion was biased towards his teammate Winn for the competition.
Cormier was adamant that he did not pick any favorites and referee Herb Dean had to step in to separate the two. ‘DC’ urged Hawes to be more respectful and the New Jersey striker apologized to Cormier shortly after the spat.
During the post-fight press conference, Phil Hawes expanded on the events that had transpired and stated that it was simply a misunderstanding.
“Yeah, it was just a misunderstanding on my behalf,” Hawes said. “‘DC’ is such a role model to me, [he’s] a two-weight world champion, just a stellar dude. So it was just a miscommunication. Wrong place, wrong time.
“I apologize, ‘DC.’ Don’t beat me up.” (h/t MMA Fighting)
Hawes shares his thoughts on whether the fight should’ve been stopped earlier
The 33-year-old bounced back from a loss to Chris Curtis last November. Hawes looked commanding in the fight as he viciously pieced Winn apart. While the referee Dean called a stop to the contest late in the second round, some argued that the stoppage should’ve been called earlier given how many times Winn was wobbled in the first round.
When asked about whether he believes the fight should’ve been ended earlier, ‘No Hype’ said, “Herb Dean and the UFC have been here for a while and I think they know what they’re doing. I’m just going to let them do what they do, I’m going to do what I’m going to do. Fighting in there is tough enough I don’t want to do their jobs, I know what to do.”
Phil Hawes now stands with a record of four wins and a loss under the banner after making his way into the UFC through Dana White‘s Contender Series.
