Swan Song

Last weekend Phillipe Nover dropped another close decision to Rick Glenn on the undercard of UFC 208. The loss was however was bittersweet, even though Nover didn’t get the W, he did get to realize a lifelong dream of fighting in front of his home crowd of Brooklyn, NY. This wednesday Nover decided it was one loss too many and gracefully bowed out from the sport via instagram.

Nover was one of those guys that had all the potential but for some reason things just never came together. A superstar in the TUF house, Nover won all three fights by submission only losing to Efrain Escudero in the TUF 8 finale.

The 33 year old Filipino grappler was originally cut from the UFC back in 2010, but fought his way back by winning five out of six fights in Bellator and smaller circuits. He began his second stint in 2015 only to go 1-3 with all his losses coming via decision. Although a durable fighter, many say his achilles heel was his inability to finish fights.  Either way, Nover came to fight every time he stepped into the octagon and no one could deny that he was a true warrior. We wish him the best of luck in all future endeavours.

Do you guys think this was the right move or did Nover sell himself short?

Wilson Reis Vs. Ulka Sasaki

Upon cursory look, it may seem like the universe has cut some Wilson Reis some slack considering that his original opponent was none other than the formidable Demetrious Johnson, but Johnson picked up an injury and that fight had to go down the drain for the time being. However, this does not mean that Reis will not get any action. He is now rescheduled to fight Ulka Sasaki who is a Japanese mixed martial artist. Sasaki may not be on the same level as Demetrious Johnson but the 125 lb fighter who went pro back in 2010 is also capable of actually taking down Reis. Taking a look at Sasaki’s mixed martial record across all stages, he has a total of 24 fights under his belt of which he has managed to clinch 19 wins. He even has 2 knockouts to his name and you can rest assured that he is going to Reis a run for his money.

Phillipe Nover Vs. Rick Glenn

Rick Glenn is an ex WSOF featherweight champion and he came out the worst when he faced off against Evan Dunham, but Glenn now gets a chance to prove his mettle in his preferred 145 lbs weight division where he will take on Phillipe Nover, who in comparison to Dunham, is docile and might just be the perfect prey for Glenn to take advantage of and gain back his confidence.

UFC Fight Night 95 (also called UFC Brasilia) went down from Ginasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia, Brazil tonight (September 24, 2016). Headlined by Cristiane ‘Cyborg” Justino’s second bout in the UFC, the event featured a plethora or Brazilian talent.

The main event went down according to the script. Justino’s opponent, UFC newcomer Lina Lansberg, lasted longer than many expected, making it to the second round. But she had to withstand a hellacious beating to do so. Lansberg could mount no meaningful offense, and spent the entire fight in survival mode before the referee finally intervened.

The co-feature saw former bantamweight champion Renan Barao get back on the winning track in his second fight at 145 pounds. He battled former Ultimate Fighter finalist Phillipe Nover, taking a unanimous decision after three relatively uneventful rounds.

And finally, the third from the top billing saw the heavyweight slugfest with the outcome most expected. Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva duked it out for the better part of two rounds before Nelson found the chin of his Brazilian counterpart and then finished it on the ground. Most of the chatter about the fight centered on what happened next.

Upset that referee ‘Big’ John McCarthy had not stopped the fight sooner, Nelson made his displeasure felt. After walking away in frustration at being forced to hit his friend Silva more than he felt necessary, Nelson came back and kicked McCarthy in the butt as the latter tended to the prone Brazilian.

There was a time when Renan Barao (34-4) was considered one of the best fighters in the world. The former bantamweight kingpin had a stellar record of 32-1 and was thought to be untouchable. Even Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White put Barao high up on his pound-for-pound list.

Things have changed.

Two devastating losses to TJ Dillashaw and a decision defeat at the hands of Jeremy Stephens has put Barao in a tough spot. He had a chance to earn his first win since late 2014 when he competed against Phillipe Nover (11-7-1) at UFC Fight Night 95.

While he didn’t look like the same man that put fear in the 135-pound division, Barao did walk away with a win.

The two exchanged jabs to get the first round underway. “The Baron” blocked a couple of high kicks. Barao landed an inside leg kick and moved forward with punches. Nover countered with a left hook and got his opponent off balance momentarily. A jab found the mark for “Super.” Barao consistently kicked the lead leg of Nover. A spinning heel kick attempt from Barao was off. The horn sounded shortly after.

A right hand scored for “The Baron” early in the second round. A combination found the mark for Barao and he landed a jumping kick. Barao had a burst after over a minute of toning down with a body punch. With about 13 seconds left in the round, Barao secured a takedown and held top control until the round was over.

The final round started and Nover landed a counter left hook. A hard straight right landed for Barao. “The Baron” got in a body lock and tripped “Super.” Nover got to his feet quickly. Barao ducked under a punch and landed an uppercut to the body. An inside elbow connected for Nover. A knee to the body found the mark for Barao. He took Nover down as the final horn sounded.

Barao was named the winner after the score totals were in favor of the former champion.

Final Result: Renan Barao def. Phillipe Nover via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
