Fighting on Sunday nights preliminary card for UFC on Versus 4, lightweight Charles Oliveira was able to stop opponent Nik Lentz in the second round with a rear-naked choke submission. Unfortunately for Oliveira, he set up the submission by scoring with an illegal knee to Lentz head who had one knee on the ground.
The illegal knee was totally missed by the referee, but was not though, missed by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission member who was cageside for the event, nor was it missed by the rest of the Consol Engery Center audience who voiced their displeasure with a chorus of boos immediately after the knee landed.
After Oliveira was announced as the winner, color commentator Joe Rogan told the audience that the Commission would be looking into the result of the fight, and may opt to overturn the result by making the bout a “No Contest”.
Oliveira, speaking to Tatame.com, felt that he should still be given the win saying it wasn’t the illegal knee that did all the damage and hopes the Commission will see it his way.
“I didn’t realize he was still (with a knee) on the ground… At the heat of the moment, I wanted to knock him out or submit him. The knee landed and the referee didn’t stop the fight, then I hit him again with another knee. The first one was illegal, but it didn’t hti him on the jaw, and he kept fighting, trying to take me down. The second one actually hurt him”.
“…I think it won’t happen (they won’t change the result). He didn’t go out, he kept on the fight and stood up, then he felt the second knee. There’s no reason to not give me the victory”.
The PSAC should announce their findings within the next day or two, we’ll post their findings once they’ve made their decision.

UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo won his ninth bout with the top promotion in the main event of Sunday nights UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry event with a spectacular come from behind knockout.
It appeared that the big French striker was in serious trouble (check out the Gif after the jump) after Barry scored with a looping right, sending Kongo to the mat. With Kongo scrambling to get back to his feet, referee Dan Miragliotta looked ready to step in but thankfully held off.
Standing on wobbly legs, Kongo used the cage to brace his foot stunning his opponent with a right to the side of the head dropping Barry’s hands. Kongo would then follow it up with a right uppercut to the chin sending Barry to the mat unconscious ending the fight at 2:39 of the first.

Earning his seventh “Fight Night” bonus, the fourth “Submission of the Night”, and fifth straight, Joe Lauzon secures a very painful looking Kimura on opponent Curt Warburton. Lauzon forced the tap at 1:58 of the first, putting him back in the win column after a Kimura submission loss to George Sotiropoulos at UFC 123 last November.
Lentz meanwhile, was sent to the hospital and will undergo surgery Monday morning according to him via this Twitter (@NikLentz) message.
– I have to stay hospital tonight and get surgery in the morning. Kinda lame, but the FOTN made me feel better. Thanks #ufc and @danawhite

UFC President Dana White announced the “Fight Night” winners for Sunday night’s UFC Live: Kongo vs. Berry (aka UFC on Versus 4) event via Twitter (@danawhite) immediately after the conclusion of the live broadcast.
UFC officials also announced the gate numbers for the Consol Engery Center with a total of 7,792 fans in attendance for a live gate of $562,310.
Earning $50,000 in bonus money was main event fighter, and new comeback King, Cheick Kongo for “Knockout of the Night”, while Joe Lauzon earned his seventh bonus for “Submission of the Night”, and the “Fight of the Night” bonus went to Charles Oliveria vs. Nik Lentz.
UFC Live: Kongo vs. Berry took place at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 26. The main card aired live on Versus in the U.S., while Canadian fans tuned into Rogers Sportsnet. The entire seven fight preliminary card was broadcast live over the web via the promotions Facebook.com/UFC page.
Moving into the main event after that last minute removal of Nate Marquardt, heavyweights Cheick Kongo and Pat Barry showcased their punching power in the first few minutes of the first round. Barry appeared to have Kongo in trouble after scoring some strikes that put the French fighter down, but referee Dan Miragliotta allowed the fight to continue. Kongo would get back to his feet, while still on rubber legs he’d plant his foot against the cage and stun Berry as he moved in for the kill. Kongo followed that up a right to Berry’s chin, knocking him out before his limp body would hit the mat finishing the fight at 2:39 of the first.
Winning his fourth “Submission of the Night” bonus, Joe Lauzon wasted little time finishing Curt Warburton with a Kimura in the first round. Lauzon appeared to have some issue finding his range against the longer reach of Warburton, finally scoring with a right hand that put the Brit to the mat. Lauzon immediately jumped in for the kill landing several strikes and quickly took Warburton’s arm instead, securing a Kimura. Warburton tried to fight off the submission but Lauzon would readjust the pressure, twisting the arm even more into an ugly position forcing the tap at 1:58.
Despite only lasting less than seven minutes, the lightweight bout between Charles Oliveira and Nik Lentz was an exciting matchup from the beginning of the fight. Both fighters would score with a few punches, with Oliveira pushing the pace by attempting several submissions. In the second round both men would attempt to stand from their knees, with Oliveira rising first and scoring a vicious knee to Lentz face. The only problem was Lentz still had one knee on the mat, which was obvious to everyone but the referee who let the fight continue. The stunned Lentz was unable to recover allowing Oliveira to secure a rear-naked choke submission to end the fight at 1:48 of the second.
After the bout, color commentator Joe Rogan announced that the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission would be looking into the illegal knee, which could mean the result of the fight could be turned into a “No Contest”.
