It’s safe to say this Saturday’s (February 11, 2017) UFC 208 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York has received more than its fair share of criticism from MMA fans and media alike.

After all, the card features the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight title fight, but it doesn’t involve the consensus top women’s featherweight in the world, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino. While the UFC offered Cyborg several chances to participate in the fight, she ultimately turned them down and then failed a USADA drug test, leaving her UFC future in question for now.

The fact that the promotion went on to book a women’s featherweight title bout anyway was (and still is) viewed as a sort of money grab by the UFC to add legitimacy to a card that badly needed it.

Longtime former middleweight champion and MMA legend Anderson Silva was added to the card on somewhat short notice against knockout slugger Derek Brunson, a bout where “The Spider” would seem to have little to gain but everything to lose considering he hasn’t secured an official win since October 2012.

All of that has many fans understandably questioning if they will buy the pay-per-view. Will you?

Former UFC title challenger Chan Sung Jung made a shocking return to the octagon last night (Sat., Feb. 4, 2017), blasting Dennis Bermudez with a vicious uppercut to secure an emphatic KO in the main event of UFC Fight Night 104 from Houston.

Although “The Korean Zombie” certainly ate some big shots from “The Menace” in the opening minutes of the bout, the fact that he was able to finish a perennial contender after three-and-a-half long years away from the top levels of MMA obviously speaks volumes about his dedication to the sport and his preparation for the return bout.

After knocking out the No. 9-ranked contender, the sky could be the limit for TKZ in the entertaining UFC 145-pound arena, even if he already has an injury TKO loss to current champion Jose Aldo (which came in his last fight back in 2013). With interim champion Max Holloway currently on the mend and supposedly heading for a title unification bout with Aldo, could The Korean Zombie already be next in line for a title shot?

Recently, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has seen a massive uptick in top fighters calling for so-called ‘money fights’ in their next bout rather than the fight that makes the most sense from a rankings and/or merit standpoint.

The term rose to extreme prominence in early 2016, when current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor began throwing about his now-infamous ‘moneyweight’ comment about his fight with late replacement Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 196, a fight McGregor would actually suffer his first UFC loss in. But ‘money fights’ were here to stay, and McGregor only added fuel to that fire when he took on Eddie Alvarez to win his second UFC championship at November 2016’s UFC 205.

The upper echelons of the UFC roster – who are solid drawing fighters in their own right but nowhere near McGregor – justifiably see what ‘The Notorious’ is pulling in each fight, and that coupled with the UFC’s recent sale to Hollywood giant WME-IMG for a staggering $4.2 billion has them understandably wanting to be paid like top athletes. But the problem is, not as many want to see some of these so-called ‘money fights’ even close to as much as they’d want to see any fight with McGregor.

Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley began calling for a huge payday literally minutes after he knocked out Robbie Lawler to win the title last August, pegging Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz as his prospective big draw opponents. When he was instead scheduled to face Stephen Thompson at UFC 205 and fought “Wonderboy” to a draw, Woodley then began putting out the feelers for a ‘money fight’ with middleweight champion Michael Bisping. The term has also been used by newly-crowned bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt, who wants to face featherweight champion Jose Aldo, and by Rose Namajunas for her desired match with surging contender Michelle Waterson.

Those are big fights, but they just aren’t bouts on the level of a true ‘money fight’ headlined by McGregor, and overall some of of these champions will just have to start defending their belts rather than calling their shots for potentially huge paydays. That’s not to say some kind of super fight, such as a long-rumored GSP vs. Anderson Silva bout, wouldn’t be good for the sport in a barren schedule of early 2017 bouts lacking a true feature attraction.

What do you think – is all the ‘money fight’ talk getting old, or do you understand the fighters’ points of view?

The MMA world is in disarray following Ronda Rousey’s 48-second TKO loss to Amanda Nunes (highlights here) in the main event of (Fri., December 30, 2017) UFC 207 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, her second straight stoppage loss.

Immediately after the fight, many speculated we had seen the last of Rousey inside the Octagon and many more – including Nunes – suggested she should outright retire.

Most believe Rousey’s recent failures can be mostly attributed to her longtime coach Edmond Tarverdyan, who took an Olympic medalist judoka and tried to make her into a boxer facing the most dangerous female strikers in the world. Tarverdyan has been raked over the coals by nearly everyone, most notably by Rousey’s own mother. ‘Rowdy’ seemed to have fallen in love with her hands when she knocked out Bethe Correia to rousing applause at 2015’s UFC 190, but the tables have clearly turned and it’s tough to decipher if her problems could even be fixed.

However, Rousey’s talent didn’t just disappear, and while she’s got nothing left to prove, the ultra-competitive grappler most likely want to go out like she has after the dust settles. If she does ultimately decide to fighting, there’s little doubt she has to dump Tarverdyan and reinvent herself at a new camp, where she could have a possibility at success. She may just be done fighting, however.

What do you think?

With a number of record-setting events and growth, 2016 was definitely a year to be remembered in the history of mixed martial arts (MMA).

The sport blasted into the mainstream like it never has before thanks in large to the never-ending media coverage granted to dual weight champion Conor McGregor, whose rivalry with Nate Diaz will most certainly go down as one of the most storied ever. And of course “The Notorious” followed up his rebound win over Diaz with a lightweight title-winning knockout of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, so it’s tough to pick anyone but the popular Irishman; yet he also lost a fight and 2016 also featured so much more from the other fighters on the roster.

For example, Dominick Cruz came back from the worst streak of injuries the UFC has ever seen to win back his bantamweight title from T.J. Dillashaw before defending it against Dillashaw’s onetime friend and mentor Urijah Faber at UFC 199. Also at that event, Michael Bisping shocked the world with his first-round knockout of Luke Rockhold to win the middleweight title. Add that to “The Count’s” close wins over Anderson Silva and Dan Henderson, and the brash Brit is certainly a top contender.

Pound-for-pound ruler Demetrious Johnson also extended his streak of title defenses at 125 pounds by two. Welterweight champ Tyron Woodley stormed back with a first-round knockout of Robbie Lawler in July only to retain his title in a thrilling bout with Stephen Thompson at UFC 205. As for “Wonderboy,” he’s a contender for the award with three huge bouts against three champions throughout the year.

Amanda Nunes surprised everyone by destroying Miesha Tate to win the women’s 135-pound belt at UFC 200. Heavyweight champion cut a quiet path of dominance through the UFC’s biggest division by knocking out Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, and Alistair Overeem for a monumental 2016.

It was an absolutely insane year for MMA in 2016, so it’s hard to pick one clear-cut winner for the best fighter. Who is your pick?
