Fuck Cancer: Donate to “CagePotato’s Fight for ALF” and Help Out a Beloved Member of the Potato Nation

(A personal message from Karmaatemycat, recorded last night.)

For years, Laura “angry little feet” Nicholson (aka “ALF”) has been a calming, motherly influence on CagePotato.com’s forums and comment sections. Just kidding — she’s a salty s.o.b., meaner than a sack full of rattlesnakes…and we wouldn’t change her for the world. A passionate supporter of mixed martial arts and a superstar on twitter (@angrylittlefeet), Laura has become a true friend to many folks in the Potato Nation.

Yesterday, we learned that Laura was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (“The big C“) and we were devastated. But we know that she won’t back down from this fight, and we’re going to have her back every step of the way.

Like so many Americans afflicted with cancer, Laura has no health insurance, and has already gone $10,000 into debt. We just want to help dig her out and raise her spirits. Every little bit helps, right? So we’ve started an Indiegogo page — CagePotato’s Fight for ALF — and we’ll be asking for your donations* over the next couple months.

The $5,000 goal that we’ve set for this campaign represents a tiny slice of the financial burden that Laura will have to endure. That’s the reality. But we want ALF to know that we have her back, just as we’d have the back of any devoted CP family member who falls on hard times.

Give a dollar, give $5, give whatever you feel comfortable with. (By the way, a $50 donation gets you a CP t-shirt. A $1,000 donation gets you a live cam show with either BG or Karmaatemycat. Ten minutes, anything goes. Yeah, we’re working on better prizes.) All funds raised will go to Laura, even if we don’t reach our goal. Considering that tens of thousands of people visit this site every day, we’re confident that we can hit it.

We intend to mobilize the MMA community to help spread the word about Laura’s health situation and our efforts. In the meantime, visit the “CagePotato’s Fight for A.L.F.” Indiegogo page and join the fight. Thanks guys. We friggin’ love all of you.

You Are Cordially Invited to Join Us for Episode 1 of ‘Ask the Potato Live’ Thursday at 2:00 pm ET

(We may look odd, but at least we know a little bit about MMA.)

In our ongoing effort to provide the Potato Nation with the best interactive reader experience in the MMA blogosphere, we’re happy to announce a new addition to the site.

Starting this Thursday, we’ll be streaming a weekly live video edition of  “Ask the Potato” and we’d love for you guys to get involved. If it catches on, we may even start doing “Ask the Potato Live” shows on a regular basis with actual guests. No promises though. We know how disappointed kids are when their parents let them down.

More details after the jump.

If it catches on, we may even start doing “Ask the Potato Live” shows on a regular basis with actual guests. No promises though. We know how disappointed kids are when their parents let them down.

Here’s how you can join in:

1. Check out the site Thursday for a post with an embedded streaming player that will allow you to watch live.

2. If you want to join us on the show to ask a question, debate a topic, or just to tell us how much we suck, sign up for a free Spreecast account and click on the show link we provide when it’s live on Thursday. Pretty simple.

3. If you’re too gun shy to show your face on the air for fear of revealing that you’re really Sean McCorkle (I’m looking at you, Xenophon) you can chat with us on the show page and pose your questions there as long as you have a Spreecast account.

We hope to see some familiar faces and look forward to the inevitable glut of insults hurled our way about how we all have faces for radio.

Potato Nation Fight Video of the Day: logdog52

Fitzpatrick is a freshman at the Clay Guida School of Head Movement.

Proud member of the Potato Nation Logan Wendt (AKA logdog52) sent us video evidence of his amateur debut in Lebanon, Missouri back in March.  We figure Logan sent us the video because not only did he win, he won quickly via choking the other guy right the hell out.  Running down our “Do We Post It?” checklist, we see:

1) A fight video.
2) A fight video in which a dude goes out cold.
3) A fight video in which a dude goes out cold and one of you bastards did it.

Well, ok, we’re sold. We salute you, logdog52, for actually getting out from behind your keyboard and into a cage.  Nice, playa.

Video starts out with the fighters entrances; Logan comes in to “TNT” like he’s serious about wrecking shop.   His opponent, Ryan Fitzpatrick, is admittedly not so impressive, but as logdog says himself, “What do you expect in amateurs, right?” Fight starts at 1:53 if you’re impatient.

The fight starts and Logan sticks his opponent with a left jab that activates the bobblehead setting on Fitzpatrick. A couple of leg kicks and hooks and now the poor guy just wants a hug, so Logan kindly hugs Fitzpatrick right around the throatal-neck area until he goes peacefully to sleep.

Or maybe not so peacefully. As Logan tells us, “I caught him in a nice Mckenzitine in just 30 seconds of round 1. I actually had to choke him out twice before the ref stopped it. He goes limp and falls to the floor and the ref moved in to look at him and I kind of let off a bit but he started to wiggle so I wrenched it back up!”

So here’s to you, Mr First Time Fight Winner Guy. Not only did you manage to train and fight while being a poor student, you also managed to scrape up the cash to pay for a decent recording of your bout. And for that, we thank you.

The guys over at Hammerfisted.com invited Ben and I to be on their podcast this week, but since B-Gold had a Twilight Fan Expo wedding to attend, I had to go it alone. On the show, which can be listened to here, we discussed a variety of topics including the UG, late night phone calls from Gus Johnson and the real reason why I wasn’t at the Boston fan expo.

I apologize in advance for my homemade apple wine and ADHD-fueled babble. Give it a listen, if only to make fun of my Canadian accent.
