Former women’s bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko made a brutally successful flyweight debut by dismantling UFC newcomer Priscila Cachoeira (watch full highlights here) in the co-main event of last night’s (Sat., February 3, 2018) UFC Fight Night 125 from Arena Guilherme Paraense in Belém, Brazil.

The win gave ‘Bullet’ the emphatic statement victory she needed to solidify a 125-pound title shot, a division in which she’s become talked about as essentially the uncrowned champion. She was crisp, precise, and bulldozing with her striking early, and showed a ground game to match when she took Cachoeira down at will and battered her with an endless outpouring of hugely  damaging punches and elbows before mercifully ending the bout with a second-round choke.

Cachoeira’s toughness was to be admired, yet after the fight, longtime referee Mario Yamasaki was highly criticized by many who believed that she had absorbed far too many unanswered strikes while not defending herself, and appeared to tap out at least once before having to do it again to get Yamasakito stop the bout.

Perhaps the most prominent name to do so was UFC president Dana White, who absolutely called Yamasaki out on Instagram after UFC Belem, noting that he has come under intense scrutiny for this exact sort of thing several times before and failed to stop a fight where one of his fighters was outlanded by a gross 230-3 margin:

White put all of his cards on the table regarding Yamasaki, and while he may be rough around the edges concerning many topics of discussion, it’s hard to argue with the UFC’s front man here.

Fighters’ safety is legitimately being put in danger when Yamasaki is refereeing their bouts, as Cachoeira was simply being battered without end even if her fighting spirit would not let her give up. She was in the crucifix eating punches while unable to move or defend herself, and it’s just one of the simplest tenets of mixed martial arts that if a fighter is in that spot, the referee should stop the bout.

Yamasaki did not yet again, however, and it’s no surprise to see White and many others call him out for it.

Let’s hope athletic commissions take heed and decide to stop putting fighters’ health and careers in peril just to have Yamasaki errantly officiate another event on their watch.

In the co-main event of last night’s (Sun. February 3, 2018) UFC Belem event, former UFC women’s bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko took on Priscila Cachoeira in a flyweight contest.

Shevchenko’s last Octagon appearance saw her take a split decision loss to Amanda Nunes in a 135-pound title fight. Prior to that she racked up a two-fight win streak over Julianna Pena and Holly Holm. “The Bullet” looks to rise up the 125-pound ranks in hopes of capturing the newly implemented women’s flyweight title.

Cachoeira was making her UFC debut after accumulating an 8-0 mixed martial arts (MMA) record. A win over the likes of an opponent the calibre of Shevchenko would be massive for the rookie.

Right out the gate Shevchenko put on a masterfully dominant performance, battering Cachoeira on the ground before locking up a rear-naked choke. While the fight may have been stopped a little later than some might have liked, Mario Yamasaki finally waved the fight off after Cachoeira tapped to a rear-naked choke.

UFC Fight Night 125 went down tonight (February 3, 2018) from Arena Guilherme Paraense in Belem, Brazil. The headliner was between Brazilian legend and former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and rising knockout artist Eryk Anders. Machida captured a glimmer of his old glory, eking out a slow-paced decision behind greater volume. Anders pressured but failed to pull the trigger enough. Machida, meanwhile, circled and kicked and survived a few sticky moments to see the judges award him a decision. It marks Machida’s first win since 2014.

The co-headliner saw former bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko’s debut at flyweight against Brazilian newcomer Priscila Cachoeira. Shevchenko ruthlessly mauled the hopelessly overmatched Brazilian, submitting her by rear-naked choke in the second, well after the fight should have been stopped.

Shevchenko vs. Cachoeira served as the co-main event of UFC Belem. This was “Bullet’s” debut at flyweight. Shevchenko was counting on a title shot with a dominant performance.

Shevchenko looked sharp early. She landed a clean left hand followed by a kick to the body. Cachoeira was taken down. An elbow landed for Shevchenko and she busted open her opponent. Cachoeira’s face was a crimson mask. Shevchenko continued to pepper the body of her opponent with some elbows to the head mixed in. Round one was a total mismatch.

The second stanza began and Shevchenko once again found her way to top control. She got the crucifix position and rained down punches. Shevchenko went for the kimura, but didn’t get it. She got back to the crucifix position and referee Mario Yamasaki looked closely. Shevchenko went to mount and hammered away. Yamasaki let the fight go on for too long. Finally, Shevchenko locked in the rear-naked choke for the submission.
