Urijah FaberThe World Extreme Cagefighting’s most popular fighter, “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (23-4) was hoping to make his return to the cage in September but is now looking at the month of November instead.

Faber had been scheduled to face Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 50 on Aug. 18, it would have marked a return for the fighter at 135 pounds, but an injury forced him to pull out.

“The California Kid” was a guest on Sherdog.com’s radio show recently speaking about the injury, his recovery, and more.

“I’m back to full-on training now. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to fight in November. I told (WEC officials) I could go in September when I found out I’d be out four to six weeks. I wanted to be on the Sept. 30 card, but I got pushed back to November.”

“I was doing some kickboxing and takedowns and my leg got yanked from the outside in,” said Faber. “They said it was an atypical injury to my MCL. My MCL kind of peeled away from the bone. They told me I wouldn’t need surgery, but I’d be out four to six weeks. I was able to do some stuff without twisting it, so I was able to work out, do physical therapy and stay in shape. It’s been six weeks since I hurt my leg, this was supposed to be a six-week injury and I had my first full week of practice last week.”

“Where I’m at right now, I’m just having a great time and fighting my heart out. I just want fights that make sense. (A fight with Miguel) Torres would be bigger for me right now than (fighting WEC bantamweight champion Dominick) Cruz. There are all kinds of fights I can do right now and can go back up to 145. I feel like I can do well against most anybody at 145 and I’d be willing to go to 155 at some point.”

Faber is just 2-3 in his past three fights, three of which were WEC featherweight title fights, having lost his last bout to current featherweight champ José Aldo in the main event of WEC’s first ever pay-per-view show in April of this year.

“I Don’t Know If He’s Ever Really Lost His Step,” Frank Mir Quick Quote

“I don’t know if he’s ever really lost his step. I just think the fighters now in the UFC are just a little bit more aggressive than the fighters in PRIDE…I think Cro Cop has a good sprawl, he has a good double underhooks. I think if I were to try to just drop and shoot on him, he would stop my shot. I think standing up with him is actually the route to go at first and then eventually when you work in the clinch, going to the ground is obviously a lot easier to do with him than Nogueira.”

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir (13-5) was a guest on The MMA Hour on Monday to speak about his upcoming UFC 119 main event fight against Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovi? on Sept. 25 in Indianapolis. Mir had been scheduled for a rematch against Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira but the Brazilian was forced to withdraw so he could have surgery for his hip and knee.

Lawal’s manager Ryan Parsons offered the update to Sherdog.com concerning the former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champ, saying that the fighter will be out for up to nine months.

Parsons noted that the injury occurred Saturday night in Lawal’s loss to newly crowned champ Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante.

Meanwhile, “King Mo” himself addressed the use of the O2 canisters just before his fight Saturday to both MMAjunkie.com and TheGarv.com.

“My manager and coaches approached the athletic commission before the fight and asked them about it. They said that it’s cool. The can is nothing but pure oxygen. It’s oxygen in a can. It’s like 95 percent oxygen. It’s like sucking in a little oxygen through a can. That’s it.”

“No effect, man,” he said of his O2 use during the fight. “People want to make a big deal about it, but it’s not a big deal. I used it in training camp for a week, (and) it helped me slow my heart rate down and focus my breathing – that’s about it. I could have done it without the oxygen can.”

In both interviews Lawal goes on to speak about the loss and what went wrong in his loss to Cavalcante.

Brandon VeraUFC light-heavyweight fighter Brandon “The Truth” Vera (11-5) is looking to return to the octagon this coming December or January. Even though he suffered a severe eye injury at the hands of Jon Jones last March, in the main event of UFC LIVE: Vera vs. Jones, Vera doesn’t believe any of the hype that is currently surrounding the rising young fighter.

“During the fight I remember thinking, ‘Man, really? All the hype was about this guy?’” Vera said. “I specifically remember saying to him in my head, ‘Man, you (expletive) suck.’

“Right when the ‘k’ came out in my head, I got blasted.”

“It’s hard for me to say because he beat me, but I still don’t believe the hype,” Vera said. “I like Jon Jones as a fighter, but I owe that (expletive). He’s definitely not coming to my house for Christmas.”

During the first round, Jones threw an elbow that fractured Vera’s face in three places. It also severed a nerve and lodged a chip of bone behind his right eyeball.

To repair the damage, Vera had to undergo multiple surgeries, the last of which took place just seven weeks ago.

“I’m still babying it, but it’s getting better,” Vera said. “At one point, I couldn’t even touch it. December or January is when I’m looking to come back. I test my face every day to see what I can get away with.”

Vera was interviewed by the LasVegasSun.com. The fighter is currently on a two fight losing streak, suffering defeat at the hands of Jones and Randy Couture who beat him at UFC 105 in November.

Nogueira offered the update on the MMAllStars.com site.

The UFC heavyweight offered his views on several subjects on the surgery, his friend Anderson Silva’s fight, and who he’d like to see crowned UFC heavyweight champion by the time he returns.

Here’s a few quotes.

This was a much anticipated fight as much for you as for your fans, what can you say about this second match up?

Minotauro: At my first fight with Mir I was not ok, I was stubborn and had to pay for that! Mir is a fantastic athlete and deserves respect, he’s had some tough moments in his life, and he’s undoubtedly a winner! This second match up could be a “double-edged sword”, if the athlete is not able to separate heart from head, the chances of everything going to waste grow a lot! In my opinion going after a rematch has its limits. When they offered me this match, the whole plot was written in my head on a split second, “If God is putting him on my way once again, I’ll be ready!!” With that I’ve decided to fight only if I’m 100%!!

What do you expect from your twin brother, Rogério (Minotouro) against the explosive Ryan Bader?

Minotauro: The good thing about this entire situation is that I’ll be able to be at his corner!!(Laughter) We know Ryan’s game quite well, he’s very fast and he’s evolved a lot since time I coached him at TUF. Rogério is living a great moment in his career and his goal is definitely to take the light-heavyweight belt home He’ll be fighting with everything he’s got! His boxing is really dangerous, that makes it possible to control the distance in the fight. Another good point is Rogério’s fighting experience, we believe that’ll make a big difference.

vitor-belfort-2Former UFC light-heavyweight champion and recent UFC top middleweight contender, Vitor Belfort (19-8) posted a message via Twitter that he plans to make his return in October. “The Phenom” made no mention of an opponent but did note that it wouldn’t be current middleweight champ Anderson Silva who is out with an injury and expected to return next year.

This year I am not going to fight for the title because the champion is hurt but November we will be in action for sure that is what I can say.

Belfort is currently on a five fight win streak which include wins over Rich Franklin in his return to the UFC at UFC 103, and Matt Lindland at the Affliction: Day of Reckoning event back in January of 2009. The former UFC champ had been scheduled to face Silva twice, the first at UFC 109 in Feb. and the second at UFC 112 in April of last year, but both had medical issues and were unable to compete (Silva recovered from elbow surgery and Belfort injured his shoulder).
