kysprayStrikeforce CEO Scott Coker will be looking at the use of oxygen cans by Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal and KJ Noons just before their televised fights this past weekend at Strikeforce: Houson.

MiddleEasy.com broke the story on Sunday, pointing out their use and identifying them as TRUO2 Portable Oxygen Can’s. The use of compressed O2 is a no-no giving one fighter a distinct advantage over another.

Coker was asked about the oxygen cans on Sunday night while he was a guest of the MMA Nation online radio show.

“You know, I’ll tell you, the cans, the oxygen cans were brought to our attention actually this morning by one of our guys and I didn’t see any anything, but I heard that they [Noons and Lawal] were taking some oxygen. Like you say, canned oxygen. So, we’re going to look into it, but right now I just don’t have enough information so I don’t want to comment until I find out what it was. And from what I hear everything that they did was approved by the commission, so we’ll talk to them and have a conversation with them.”

Let’s hope that the Texas State Athletic Commission takes this seriously also and starts their own investigation.

Randy Couture Respectful Of Toney, Love Machida Afterwards

UFC Hall of Famer and former champion Randy Couture (18-10) has nothing but respect for his UFC 118 opponent James Toney, which he’s shown in not bad mouthing the boxing champion.
He’s taking this fight very seriously and, unlike many purists, doesn’t see his co-main event bout as a “freakshow.”

He’s taking this fight very seriously and, unlike many purists, doesn’t see his co-main event bout as a “freakshow.”

“I don’t think it’s a freak show,” said Couture, who is a 7-to-1 favorite over Toney. “I give him credit for the things he’s accomplished in boxing. I certainly accomplished a lot of things in wresting that nobody gave me credit for when I made my way in to MMA.

“Those combative sports count for something. James is going to be dangerous.”

Couture talked with the LasVegasSun.com recently about this fight and is so excited about the bout that he spilled the beans on how he plans on defeating Toney.

“I would love to choke the hell out of him,” Couture said. “I think that’s a big piece of MMA and certainly a big piece I’ve been working on.”

The matchup in styles favors Couture so much, he admits it’s probably why he was given the fight against Toney over anyone else.

“I suspect it’s because I tend to be a cerebral fighter,” Couture said of why UFC brass chose him to welcome Toney to the sport. “They probably realize I have a good chance of taking him down, putting him on his back and making the point that needs to be made.”

“The Natural” was asked which opponent he’d like to fight next and responded with former UFC light-heavyweight champ Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida’s name. Obviously, Couture isn’t looking for any easy fights and still wants to be competitive at age 47.

“I’ve said all along Lyoto (Machida),” Couture said. “He’s kind of been an enigma to everyone, (Mauricio Shogun Rua) was the first to kind of solve that equation. Shogun himself would be interesting. Those are two guys at the top of the heap right now.”

Jay Hieron Returning To The UFC?

I finally got my release from SF… Y’all know what I’m about to do!!!!!!!

I have been threw alot of Shit this past year but I have trained the whole time. So all WWs take notice I’m coming for somebodys head…

It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see Hieron heading to Japan or a smaller National promotion, so fans should probably expect him in a UFC octagon soon.

Hieron has won seven straight fights, including two under the Strikeforce banner, with wins over Joe Riggs at “Strikeforce: Miami” and Jesse Taylor at the “Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg” show last summer. Taylor was a last minute replacement for Nick Diaz who was to face Hieron for the inaugural Strikeforce welterweight title. Diaz failed to appear for drug testing and was removed from the card along with the belt. Instead of fighting on the televised broadcast portion of the Strikeforce event, Hieron was relegated to the preliminary card, losing some sponsorship revenue but the promotion tried to make it up by streaming the fight live on the internet.

A recent interview with Forrest Griffin, who is out on the road promoting his new book, was a guest on the “Jason Ellis Show on Sirius XM – Faction” on Aug. 10 was asked about a rumor that he’d be facing fast rising UFC light-heavyweight Jon “Bones” Jones.

Griffin gave a less than enthusiastic reply to the question. Here’s part of the transcript for the interview from BloodyElbow.com.

“I hope I am not fighting Jon ‘Bones’ Jones. I might be. F*ck it; if I am, I am. I will do it, but I am not even training right now. That is a bad dude. That dude will whoop my ass. F*ck it. What is the worst, I mean, it could not be worse than Anderson Silva. It should not be worse than that, right? Every fight I go into, no matter what happens, it could not be worse than Anderson Silva.”

“Because that sh*t was a year ago and literally every day people ask me something about that – What happened? What happened?”

“[Anderson punched me in the chin] Repeatedly and I was very confused. I tried to punch him and he literally moved his head out of the way and looked at me like I was stupid for doing it. He looked at me like – “Why would you do such a stupid thing?” He looked at me like – “Oh, did you really think you were going to hit me? What a stupid thing to think, you slow slow white boy.”

king-moThis weekend Strikeforce light-heayweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal (7-0) will defend his title for the first time since defeating Gegard Mousasi last April at the “Strikeforce: Nashville” event. The “King” faces Brazilian Rafael Cavalcante in the main event on Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Houston” show.

Lawal talked to Tatame.com recently about the title and preparing for fight on Saturday.

“I love to be the underdog, I’ve been the underdog my whole life. I inspired myself on great wrestlers when I began my journey on MMA. I admired a lot Kevin Jackson, Mark Kerr, Mark Coleman, Kenny Mnday, Randy Couture and Renzo Gracie”.

Coming from a surprising win over the sensation Gerard Mousasi, the new champion set a “safe” strategy to win. “That was the best strategy at that point because I’m still new on this sport, I’m training for a year and a half only… To beat Gerard Mousasi was my greatest conquest.”

“The most important thing in MMA is to adapt yourself and improve in all matters… The people who train with you helps you to improve on the things you need in order to win.”

After winning Strikeforce’s belt, Lawal called in a black belt to join his camp. “Bruno (Bastos) is a monster! I’ve tapped out so many times on the trainings that I think I got a hole on my arm (laughs)… He’s helping me a lot on my positioning”, jokes Muhammad. “I want to keep on training and evolving. I won the belt, but I have a lot to improve”.
