Penn vs EdgarUFC 118 headliners, UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and former champ BJ Penn participated in a media conference call on Thursday to help promote their upcoming fight on Aug. 28 in Boston.

Penn talked about the upcoming fight and the future for the 31 year old fighter. We’ve put together some of “The Prodigy’s” better quotes from the press conference from around the web here for you to check out.

-”I don’t know if I sit there and say ‘well, I’m happy that Frankie’s a worthy opponent.’ One thing he did was wake me up, and makes me realize it never stops. When you hear people say ‘you’re the greatest of all time and this and that’ it’s all bullshit. It’s not real. It’s fake.”

-”Being a champion is fake, all that, it’s all fake. You’ve got to go out there, you’ve got to keep training, training as hard as you can, and keep winning fights.”

-”Every time you get a loss, you take a different path and get back on your journey,” Penn said. “I believe if I had won that fight I would have changed nothing about my game.

“I definitely think this (is the prime of my career). I’m 31. I have tons of experience. I’m not looking past Frankie, but I think I’m about to go on a run.”

“The loss to Frankie made me step back and realize I want to fight as much as I can,” Penn said. “After the fight with Frankie, I want to fight the next month or the next week.

-”I don’t know if my biological clock is ticking or what, but I want to fight as much as possible. I want to make a push to be a true fighter, and I think I could be very active.”

“I thought I was God’s gift to fighting,” Penn said. “I thought I would go 100-0 with 100 knockouts. When I sit back and look at my record, I can’t believe I have six losses. It just blows me away.

“No one is untouchable — and if they are, they just haven’t run into the right guy yet.”

Roy Nelson’s Thoughts On What Will Happen If Either Lesnar Or Velasquez Try To Stand With Junior.

Big Country Roy Nelson put on a courageous losing effort against future title contender Junior dos Santos, and he’s thoroughly convinced that neither the current champion Brock Lesnar nor the number one contender Cain Velasquez would survive a standing war with the Brazilian fighter. Here’s his thoughts, via Fightline:

Big Country Roy Nelson put on a courageous losing effort against future title contender Junior dos Santos, and he’s thoroughly convinced that neither the current champion Brock Lesnar nor the number one contender Cain Velasquez would survive a standing war with the Brazilian fighter. Here’s his thoughts, via Fightline:

“I think if any of the two, Brock or Velasquez, try to stand with him, they’ll probably get knocked out.”

Nelson is straight to the point, and he’s probably correct; however it’s hard to believe that either of these two wrestlers will want to keep the fight standing.

Anderson Silva Has Nothing But Respect For Steven Seagal.

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva barely survived a five round battle against Chael Sonnen as the main event bout for UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen and many MMA fans were quick to point out that Steven Seagal may have helped both mentally and physically. Seagal was seen in videos helping Silva with his fight game, and fans have been quick to laugh at the champion using Seagal to improve his fight game. Silva though, sees it differently, as he recently pointed out to Tatame:

It’s a bad joke, he’s a great master and a great coach who was there with me, helped me all the time a lot. On the beginning of my trainings, we showed me some techniques which worked out and he deserves the respect of all of us. He’s a great master and a good person. I believe people have to respect him.

It’s a pretty interesting take on Seagal and a huge endorsement for the traditional martial arts movie star. Will we Seagal continuing his training with Anderson Silva or perhaps even with other mixed martial artists. You can never tell in the crazy world of MMA.

Patrick Cote’s Take On Anderson Silva Vs. Chael Sonnen.

Patrick Cote has already fought and lost to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva so his thoughts on the UFC 117 main event bout between Silva and then number one contender Chael Sonnen are interesting to say the least. Cote looked good in the match against “The Spider” but suffered a knee injury that left […]

Patrick-Cote

Patrick Cote has already fought and lost to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva so his thoughts on the UFC 117 main event bout between Silva and then number one contender Chael Sonnen are interesting to say the least. Cote looked good in the match against “The Spider” but suffered a knee injury that left him unable to continue to fight and since then he’s lost to Alan Belcher as well. Cote recently talked to BuddaSport and here’s his take on Silva Vs. Sonnen:

It’s more about the Chael performance we have to talk. He kept an incredible pace and had a really good gameplan. Unfortunately, he got cut in the 5th round. I’m not really even a fan of Sonnen.

Cote is set to take on Tom Lawlor at UFC 121, and with another loss there’s a chance that “The Predator” could be looking for another job. Still Cote has shown that he can hang with the middleweight big boys, but the question will be whether Cote will return to the form that made him number one contender almost two years ago.

Ben Saunders, who fought as a welterweight, has been cut from the UFC according to his own post on FaceBook:

Sorry everyone I tried to fight my best these past two fights but ended up getting outworked. The UFC has officially cut me. The good news is they told me to work on my wrestling and ground game and then come back. So that is all I am going to be doing, improving dramatically and show them I belong. Much respect to Swick, Fitch, and Hallman as they were the better men on those nights and have my full respect. To fight such names is a true honor.

The 8-3-2 fighter competed on The Ultimate Fighter and lost his last two bouts to Jon Fitch and more recently(UFC 117) Dennis Hallman. His last win inside the Octagon came at UFC 106 against Marcus Davis and overall he had four wins to his three loses with the promotion.

BJ Penn Says “They’ve Just Got Little Frankie Edgar.”

Many MMA fans were pretty surprised that former champion BJ Penn hadn’t starting doing his traditional trash talking before fighting at UFC 118, but wait no more. Penn vs Edgar

Many MMA fans were pretty surprised that former champion BJ Penn hadn’t starting doing his traditional trash talking before fighting at UFC 118, but wait no more. Penn recently talked to FightLine, and showed little respect for the man that took his title, calling it a joke and then discussed how the fight would break down:

“I’m not afraid to exchange with him in any way,” said Penn. “I don’t think he wants to exchange with me. He’s going to be running around. He’s just going to try to jazz up what he did last time. A little quicker, a little better, maybe throw in a little kick. His corner, they don’t have much to work with. They’ve just got little Frankie Edgar. They don’t have the knockout king or the submission king. They’ve just got Frankie Edgar.”

Penn sounds slightly bitter, but most would be surprised if he doesn’t recapture his title. With another win Edgar would certainly cement himself as the champion, and not a one off fluke. UFC 118: Edgar Vs. Penn II is set for August 28 UFC 118 from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. Also on the card is a highly anticipated matchup between Randy Couture and James Toney as well as an important lightweight bout between Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard.
