Mike Dolce, thought by many to be one of the best nutritionists in the MMA game, has been hired by welterweight UFC fighter Thiago Alves to help get his weight problems under control. Alves has frequently come in over weight, the latest being a 1.5 pound miss at UFC 117 when he fought Jon Fitch. Now Alves hopes that the man who helped Quinton “Rampage” Jackson lose 45 lbs before his return fight against Rashad Evans can help him stay in the 170 weight class. MMAFighting talked to Dolce:

“I’ve been a fan of Thiago’s for a long time, I just think he’s fun to watch, and I saw the problems he had with his weight, whether it was missing weight or underperforming because of struggling to make weight. So after this time I sent Malki [Kawa] a text and said, ‘Enough [expletive] around, let’s get me working with Thiago.’ Here it is Monday and we’re moving forward with it. Hat’s off to Malki and to Thiago for showing how serious they are about doing it.”

“Thiago told me on the phone earlier that he walks around at 195 [pounds] eight weeks before the fight. I said, ‘Sh-t, that’s it? You can do that the week before the fight with me and you’ll feel phenomenal.’”

“The sauna to me is like an oven. Most saunas are 180 degrees. You’re actually cooking, roasting your organs. You’re cooking your brain, your heart, your liver. You’re bringing them into a detrimental state on the eve of the most important event of your life. Why would you do that to yourself? Most athletes just think, Oh, I have to make weight. Not, I have to make weight and then perform at the best of my ability. I keep my athletes super-hydrated the week of the fight. I keep them eating food, eating carbohydrates the entire week of the fight.”

Alves is a popular fighter due to his aggressive style but his inability to come in at the right weight is certainly something that most MMA fans gripe about. With a better weight cut we could see a more powerful version of the fighter, which would be scary really. Will it happen?

Despite losing to Fabricio Werdum many consider Fedor Emelianenko the number one heavyweight in the world and many fans were wondering if the recent loss would force The Last Emperor to consider retirement. It seems that Fedor has dismissed those thoughts and would prefer to fight 4-6 more times , though he doesn’t have any immediate interest in the UFC. Fedor made the statement during the M-1 Americas Selection tournament semi-finals:

“For now M-1 Global works with Strikeforce and we are concentrating on that, the contract is not over yet. So for now we don’t have any interest in the UFC. So far I feel very comfortable fighting, very good with my fighting, and I’m planning of fighting as long as I can physically. As far and I’m concerned we should discuss the possibility of signing another contract for 4-6 fights.”

One has to think that Strikeforce will want to keep Fedor in their heavyweight roster which includes Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva, and Bobby Lashley. While nothing has been signed, and there’s no word on who Fedor will fight next expect to see Fedor in action before the end of the year.

UFC heavyweight striker Pat Barry seems more like a fan at times than a high quality mixed martial arts fighter, but no one can deny the enthusiastic charisma he possesses. Barry recently talked about being asked to train for a month with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, and also to fly down to Croatia and become a sparring partner for Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic. Pretty cool by any standards; here’s the quotes via MMATorch:

“Brock Lesnar has asked for me to come and be his sparring partner for a month before he fights Cain Velasquez. How cool is that… A month with the heavyweight champion of the universe Brock Lesnar, the biggest scariest dude on earth, and then a month with a legendary striker like Cro Cop…Even Dana White said that Cro Cop is not your friend, you know what, I’ve spoken to that dude (Filipovic) like every other day since the fight. He’s called from Croatia to see what’s going on and how my healing’s coming… Something that is really cool and that no one really knows about, Cro Cop says he might fight again in November. And [Filipovic] says as soon as my hand is healed, he would like to fly me to Croatia for a month to come and be his sparring partner.

“He said, you are faster than I am and you hit harder than I do, or something like that, but I could tell that when we grabbed each other, he’s like I could tell you weren’t very strong. Like you haven’t been wrestling with guys bigger than you or stronger than you… So I’ve got a lot of giant serial killer Croatian guys out here, that are wrestlers that I could throw at you… But I would really like you to come out here and be my sparring partner for my next fight.”

UFC president Dana White recently did an interview with Telegraph.co.uk where he defended UFC 120 and the matches that make up the card. With the fight going to the O2 Arena, London, on October 16 and featuring British fighter Michael Bisping as he takes on Yoshihiro Akiyama many British fans have been questioning the quality of the card. Here’s White’s response:

For those of you at work who can’t access the video, or those who just don’t want to, here’s a little of what was said:

“You can look down the list and say whatever you want but we are going to bring a bad*** show that you are going to love to be at live and the fights are going to kick a** and you are going to leave the arena or turn off your tv that night and go ‘I didn’t just waste my Saturday night’…Yeah, we do showcase English talent when we are there in England, but we do it here too. We have Brits fighting over here, too. We have just had a card in Oakland [UFC 117] with five Brazilians against five Americans…How can anyone b**** with Akiyama fighting. Akiyama-Leben [a few weeks ago] is one of the best fights I have ever seen in my life. And Every time Akiyama comes, he brings it, man. This guy comes to fight…And Bisping…Listen, whether you don’t like Bisping, or you love Bisping – first of all the first thing I love about Michael Bisping, is that Michael Bisping wants to be the best. He wants to win a title so bad. Michael Bisping is not afraid to come out and bang with you. He’ll go toe-to-toe with you, he’ll go to the ground, and that’s going to be a fun fight too…And at the end of the day, man, this guy is going to come out and give it all he’s got and Akiyama is a beast. I love that fight.”

UFC next in line for a title shot heavyweight striker Junior dos Santos will face the winner of the upcoming championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez after his three round pummelling of Roy Nelson. Dos Santos was recently asked by Tatame about his thoughts on UFC 117 as a whole and he made an interesting comment regarding American wrestlers and their technique:

The event itself was excellent, but unfortunately there were Brazilian defeats. The Americans are good on what they do, they have a good Wrestling technique and they take you down and stay there forever, getting theirs points and winning their fights. It’s a boring fight, but it’s an efficient game they have. Let’s look forward now… Unfortunately Rafael dos Anjos got hurt on the first round, but we have to move on.

Junior has shown that he’s got some quick hips and a very good takedown defense. Add that to his lethal striking and he could give either Lesnar or Velasquez problems and should make for a very interesting fight. The MMA News can’t wait.

While Anderson Silva hasn’t said much about a potential rematch with Chael Sonnen, his manager Ed Soares recently commented about the potential bout, via FightHype. Soares, as expected, wasn’t complementary about Sonnen’s effort during the fight, and most would expect with the amount of trash talk that went on before hand that Soares has no reason to be. Here’s the quote:

Once he tapped, Chael kept fighting. He didn’t let go because he wasn’t sure of what was going on. He wasn’t going to give that position or submission up until he was sure. Once again, Chael tried to deny that he tapped until he told the ref, ‘I believe you,’ it’s like, come on dude, that’s the same shit you did with Filho and Babalu. If you’re going to tap, then tap … I mean, I don’t necessarily think an immediate rematch is legitimate. It’s not like he won by decision. You got submitted, man. Anderson got a few bumps and bruises, but let’s be realistic, you’re on a guy 23 minutes and you couldn’t finish him? Why should he get a rematch?”

Does Soares have a point, or is an immediate rematch necessary?
