UFC President Dana White is never at a loss for words, and you knew it wouldn’t be long before he commented again on the Fedor loss to Fabricio Werdum. As is often the case, Twitter was White’s communication method of choice:

@Rdays boo hoo, you are really taking the loss hard! Even setting him up with easy fights doesn’t work anymore. its over move on, I did.

There are two distinct groups on this topic, with one truly believing that Werdum was supposed to be an easy fight for Fedor, and that Fedor would win that fight nine out of ten times, while the other group points out that a two time jiu-jitsu world champion is not an easy match ever. Whatever the case, White is certainly enjoying himself at the expense of Strikeforce and Fedor.

UFC light heavyweight fighter Stephan Bonnar’s quest to defeat southpaw fighter Krzysztof Soszynski continues this Saturday at UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin and Bonnar thinks the fight will be similar to the first time. Well not exactly similar, in that a accidental headbutt opened a cut that ended the bout for Bonnar at UFC 110, which then saw the judges awarding the bout to Soszynski. Bonner seems ready for the rematch as he spoke of how he thought things would go down, via UFC.com:

“I’ve watched the first fight a bunch of times, and I definitely see the rematch being something similar. I did pretty well the first couple of minutes, and felt I got off to a solid enough start. I think my hands and defence could have been a little better as the fight went on, though. I got a little sloppy in places, and allowed Krzysztof to get off with some shots. I need to move my head a bit more in the rematch and not be static so much and in range of punches. I’m aiming to not get hit quite so much by his power-punches this time around. Preparing to face an opponent I’ve already fought is definitely a positive, as I’m already familiar with Krzysztof’s style and know what he’s all about. I’ve already spent nearly three rounds in his company, so I have a good idea of what he can and can’t do by this stage. I’m not going in there blind.”

UFC 116 will feature a heavyweight title matchup between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin and will also feature Chris Leben taking over for injured Wanderlei Silva as he faces Sexyama.

Heavyweight Championship bout: Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin
Middleweight bout: Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Chris Leben
Welterweight bout: Chris Lytle vs. Matt Brown

Preliminary card–Aired on Spike TV

Heavyweight bout: Brendan Schaub vs. Chris Tuchscherer
Light Heavyweight bout: Seth Petruzelli vs. Ricardo Romero

Preliminary card

Werdum vs FedorIn the opening moments of his main event bout against Fedor Emelianenko, Brazilian heavyweight Fabricio Werdum almost appeared to get knocked down by a punch.

Werdum talked with Tatame.com about that punch and clarified what happened.

Did his punch caused a knockdown or did you lose your balance and fall?
It wasn’t a knockdown, it was more like I lost my balance because of the punch, but I’d go for the ground anyway, so I felt on the ground wanting to go there. It wasn’t a knockdown, not at all. I felt the blow, but it wasn’t that strong, I just lost my balance.

On that moment that you felt, did you already try to pull him to your guard?
We don’t think about being hit and going to the ground, but when you get hit by him, even if you are a Muay Thai fighter and have a good standing game strategy, it’s good for you to go to the ground and try to work it on there. The strategy was to calm him down and make some space so that I could work.

Werdum also noted that a rematch is still up in the air at the moment, which he’s fine with as he just wants to enjoy the moment of his victory.

After the fight you complimented Fedor and said you would like a rematch with him. Did (Strikeforce) say anything about that matter after the event?
No, they told me they’d see, so let’s enjoy this win and maybe they’ll put me to confront Overeem, but let’s see. I just beat the best of the world, I don’t want to give a step backwards and fight against Overeem. I want to fight against Fedor from 6 to 8 months from now in Russia, Rocky Balboa style.

Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko admitted he made a mistake against Fabricio Werdum in the main event of their “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum” bout. The loss marked “The Last Emperors” first loss in 10 years noting that his over eagerness led to the loss.

“At the very beginning of the round, I hit Fabricio and I wanted to finish the fight as soon as possible and at that very moment I made a mistake. Certainly there were several moments when I could escape, but I relied on myself too much and that’s why I paid for it. At the very moment that I had to escape, I stopped. I didn’t do that and that moment was used by Fabricio to lock his clinch, to finish locking up his legs. It happens that I was made kind of an idol. Everybody loses. That happens. I’m an ordinary human being, as is all of us and if it is God’s will, the next fight I will win. I am very, very sorry and it’s a pity that I disappointed people that really believed in me and trusted me, but everything in this life happens for some reason,” said Emelianenko.

Fedor went on to say he’d like a chance to face Werdum again, which is something the Brazilian said he’d be open to also. CEO Scott Coker noted that it would be something to look at in the future but it’s not a guarantee right now.

One of the original greats of mixed martial arts, Frank Shamrock announced his retirement during Saturday night’s Showtime broadcast of “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum” event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

“When I was 22 years old, my brother gave me two important things,” Shamrock told the audience at the HP Pavilion after entering the cage. “He gave me an ass-whoopin’ and he gave me my love of mixed martial arts. Since that time I’ve traveled the world teaching mixed martial arts, preaching mixed martial arts and dragging my poor family with me from country to country to city to city.”

“I’m 37 years old now, and my time has come,” he said Saturday. “The stars like Gilbert Melendez and Cristiane ‘Cyborg,’ they’re the future and I am the past. Tonight I announce my retirement. This will be the last time I walk into this cage as a fighter.”

“It was an honor to bleed for you,” he said, “to break my bones for you and to entertain you.”

The 37 year old fighter began his pro career in 1994 and earned an interim title with the Japanese-based Pancrase promotion by defeating Bas Rutten. He became the UFC’s first middleweight (later renamed light-heavyweight) champion after Kevin Jackson at UFC Japan in 1997 and defended that title four times. One of those bouts was against Tito Ortiz and happened at UFC 22 and will be remembered as one of the great mma matches of the past. He went on to leave the UFC and earn the WEC light-heavyweight title, and became Strikeforce’s first middleweight title holder.

After amassing a 23-10-2 record over the past 16 years, Shamrock felt that he’s had enough of competing in the cage and will now work as a broadcaster for Showtime among other ventures.

Former Strikeforce Middleweight champion Cung Le is set to take on Scott Smith on June 26 as part of the Strikeforce: Fedor Vs. Werdum card which will be aired on Showtime at 10 eastern and pacific. Le will look to avenge his surpise ending loss to Smith, the first of his career, as he takes to the cage while in between movie projects. Le has had much more time to prepare for the bout, and seems to be read to follow the strategy laid out by his corner, as was evidence by his words during a recent interview with MMAMania:

Well, I’m definitely gonna listen to my corner more. I’m still gonna come out guns blazing because that’s what I do. But in the 3rd round, my corner told me to kinda go in and out and stay busy because I already had the fight won. But I tried to knock him out, ended up blowing my wad, and got caught. It was a bad decision on my part. I should have listened to my corner. I learned the hard way. The saying is very true that you ‘learn more from a loss then a win.’ I’ll be sticking to my game plan this time around. I just have to fight a smarter fight.

Le seems to have some pretty solid thoughts as he was easily winning the fight before Smith finished him off. This should be a great fight between two solid strikers, with a win setting up a third match between the two(rumored). Bring on the stand up war.
