Bibiano Fernandes weighing in for DREAM bantamweight Grand Prix in Japan

It came as a bit of a surprise this past week to hear that reigning DREAM bantamweight champ Bibiano Fernandes (11-3) had signed with the Asian based ONE Fighting Championship promotion instead of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Many expected Fernandes to sign with the World’s top promotion, including the UFC itself who announced his signing even before the last DREAM 135-lbs champion had even agreed to the sign the contract the Las Vegas based company had presented him.

Fernandes has now officially signed with ONE FC and is expected to make his debut on August 31st at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Manila, Philippines versus an unnamed opponent.

‘The Flash’ recently spoke to Tatame.com about signing with ONE FC, noting that it was for “business” reasons versus his wanting to fight for the top organization.

There was a surprise when UFC announced you signed in for the Canada event but days latter it was announced they let you go. Days later you said you didn’t even sign that same contract. What really happened?
Apart from family, it’d be a great opportunity for (myself), but when you put the family in the picture it’s not worth it. I don’t fight for me. I have people who rely on me. I’ve built what I had to build in MMA. It can be many people’s dream to fight in the UFC, but it ain’t mine. It’s all business to me. I’ve dreamed about being a champion, I earned three belts: one in Canada and two in Japan. If you have a dream, keep dreaming. If you want to fight, keep on trying. But this I’ll tell you: worship yourself otherwise nobody else will. And it’s not only on the fighting business, but in everything in life. People use you, use you, use you and then throw you away like garbage.

What are the expectations for your One FC debut?
I’ve fought all my life in Japan. Most of my fans live there. I guess One FC is just an extension of Dream. It’s not Dream, but the guys there have been helping one another at One FC. If you really look at it, you’ll see the guys that used to work on Dream here.

Nate Marquardt Tired Of Talking TRT, Wants Media/Fans To Focus On Strikeforce Title Fight

Nate Marquardt

For former UFC fighter Nate ‘The Great’ Marquardt (31-10-2) getting the media to focus on his upcoming welterweight title bout with Tyron Woodley for the vacant Strikeforce strap is proving to be a challenge.

The media are constantly asking him questions about his previous use of Testosterone Replacement Therapy and how he is adjusting to things now that he’s confirmed that he is no longer using TRT.

Marquardt is set to face Woodley on July 14, 2012 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon in the co-main event of the Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy event on SHOWTIME.

Speaking during a media call on June 26, Marquardt explained to reporters that he is getting tired of answering the same questions about TRT and would like to focus on his title fight with Woodley.

“It’s one of those things, it’s been challenging. I’ve had to find a lot of ways to combat it and I’ve had to change my training schedule, but the bottom line is I’m training hard and I feel great. I’ve felt like this before in training and done awesome. It’s one of those things, I just want to move past that point in my life. I’m so sick of answering TRT questions, to be honest. You would think the media would want to talk about something new anyways. It’s kind of old news. I’ve got a title fight coming up and I feel great and that’s the bottom line.”

Marquardt hasn’t fought since March 2011 when he won a unanimous decision over Dan Miller at UFC 128. He had been scheduled to face Rick Story at UFC on Versus 4 in June 2011 but after failing to receive a Theraputic Use Exemption for the use of TRT, and a high T:E test before the events weigh-ins, Marquardt was released from the UFC.

The fighter then signed with the UK based BAMMA promotion but failed to even debut with them. Eventually both sides came to an amicable split and Marquardt signed with Strikeforce.

Gray Maynard Critical Of Clay Guida Following Win, Apologizes Afterward For Comments

UFC lightweight Gray Maynard posted a convincing 5-round decision win over the oddly docile Clay Guida at UFC on FX. Maynard spent much of the fight attempting to engage with Guida, who was much more timid than usual. Maynard is looking forward to his next big bout in the UFC and is hoping for a title shot.

At the post fight press conference Guida offered up some complimentary words for his opponent, catching Maynard off-guard (courtesy of MMAjunkie.com).

“My hat’s off to Gray,” Guida said. “He’s a wrestler and an athlete I’ve always looked up to. He’s done things in mixed martial arts and wrestling that I wasn’t able to do. I’ve looked up to him for a long time. I’ve got nothing but respect for you and your whole family.”
The words seemed to almost take Maynard by surprise.
“Man, he’s making me feel bad about all the stuff I did in the fight,” Maynard said. “Nothing personal on all that stuff. It was a heated fight. We were talking about the stuff, Mac (Danzig) and me, the night before – that it’s going to be good to get it over with because he’s a nice guy.
“It’s nothing personal. It was a fight, it got heated, and he’s a cool guy. I’m glad we can just drop it at that. I try not to act like that.”

Brett Rogers

Heavyweight fighter Brett ‘Da Grim’ Rogers (11-4, 1NC) is ready to start a new chapter in his life after a year he’s defined as “hell” following jail time for domestic assault for an incident involving his spouse and his subsequent dismissal from Strikeforce.

‘Da Grim’ will look to begin that chapter tonight in his debut bout with Bellator Fighting Championships in the promotions opener for the 2012 Summer Series. Rogers, who enters the bout on a record of 0-2 and 1NC over his last three matches, faces a tough opponent in 15-1 Kevin Asplund on the main card in Chester, West Virginia.

Fans will get a chance to see Rogers fight on television at MTV2 or on the web at Spike.com.

Rogers spoke to MiddleEasy.com to talk about the events leading up to the assault incident, offering a heart felt explanation of what happened, as well as his ambitions towards Bellator champ Cole Konrad and the heavyweight title, but you’ll have to hit the link to read that.

“That day [long pause], after the fight with Barnett, anytime after a fight we get together with family and friends and we were having a small get-together. We’re still new to the neighborhood out here, new to the suburbs and we were trying to get to know our neighbors. We have one neighbor that’s pretty loud and then another neighbor on the opposite end of us that’s the complete opposite, but real opinionated. She had a problem with my dog because her son came behind my house one day when we weren’t here and out of town, I warned the kid that yeah he’s a nice dog, but he still needs to be trained. He’s a three-year-old so you know it’s in one ear and right out the other but I told the mother and I had signs around my house that said ‘Be careful of the dog.’ He didn’t pay attention to it, so when he opened the gate, my dog did what he was supposed to do and protect the house and check out anybody that’s foreign to him. So the little guy came in my backyard, the dog tackled him I suppose, and nipped him by his nose. I don’t know if he nipped him or scratched him, but somehow the boy was hurt by my dog.

Of course he got to the hospital because my step-mom was around and she called the cops, the cops came out and did what they needed to do…take the dog. The mother [of the kid] had things to say to me, we tried to keep it real and adult-like because there’s no sense in being loud, she knew I was going to take care of it.

My wife approached her, lady to lady, saying ‘is there anything we can do to help?’ It turned out the little boy had stitches, four to six stitches on his face. She was real sensitive about it, and I understand it was a life or death situation, but she was like ‘F*** you’ even though we could have taken care of the medical costs. It could have gone a lot smoother, but she wanted to be stern, and that right there was pretty stressful. It was stressful in our house and we [my wife] were going back and forward, trying to figure things out. Keep in mind, my wife and I have been together…forever. We’ve been married for eight years, we’ve been together for a good eleven or twelve [years], so it was just normal arguing. Losing the Barnett fight, the stress from the dog incident, the aggressiveness of that day and week… [long pause]

So later that day, we had company, some drinks. The company was new to us, and it got to a point where the ladies were arguing back and forth about the dog situation. I got to the point where I needed to say everything I needed to say to the woman, and I couldn’t do or say anything else. It was whatever for me. My wife was still going back and forth with this woman trying to calm her down and figure out the situation and she wasn’t getting into what my wife was saying. She [the mother] was taking her frustrations out on her [Brett’s wife] and I was taking my frustrations out on her [his wife].

The law [police] came out and said that I said that I wanted to kill the woman [the mother of the kid], I know I talk a lot when I get angry…but that was all bullsh**. I told that to them, the entire story and how the woman was being irrational. My wife had my back on that one, and the cops left. Later that night I felt the party was over for me. I was drinking, I actually had a lot since it was after a fight. I’m not a drinker, but I will drink for a special occasion.

I was done with the scene that night, and then I was awakened by my wife and I’m taking all kinds of heat. I’m being yelled at, I’m being screamed at, doors are being slammed, a whole bunch of craziness is just going on. I didn’t understand why my wife was yelling at me and why we are all of a sudden ‘into it.’

I knew a lot of stuff was in the air, but at this point I was just beyond myself and mad. Furious. Pissed off. Whatever word you want to use. She’s cussing me out, I’m cussing her out and it got to the point where property was starting to get damaged. It was really loud, the neighbors were nervous and scared. A lot of that added up to the equation.

Me and my wife, we were just at a point in life…I just lost my [Strikeforce] contract, I didn’t know what I was going to do. My neighbors were getting on my nerves…my head was just all over the place. My wife was throwing plates and glasses at me…

We just miscommunicated…[Long pause]

It was a hellish moment. I feel bad for putting my hands on my wife because I am not that type of person, you can ask anybody that knows me. That’s just not in my character…but we all know that it happened and I’m still apologizing to this day. I feel really bad that my family had to go through this, we’re all going through this together and I could never say enough ‘sorrys’ to my wife and I’m going to continue to say ‘I’m sorry’ to her. This is the mother of my child, [tears up] this is the mother of my kids. I shouldn’t be this upset towards her. It happened, I put my hands on my wife and it’s just been horrible. Very horrible.

I did my time in jail, I’m on probation until the end of 2013 and I accomplished my anger management class. I passed my chemical dependency test. Now we’re getting along great, our communication is greater because of counseling, we’re still in counseling and we’re just living and learning like everyone else.

Sh** happens, but that sh** ain’t happening again.”

Wanderlei Silva

UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has not made himself very popular with Brazilian fans, or Brazilian fighters, and you can include former PRIDE champion Wanderlei ‘The Axe Murderer’ Silva (34-11-1, 1NC) among them.

Silva was a guest on Wednesday’s The MMA Show with Mauro Ranallo to talk about his upcoming rematch with Rich Franklin at UFC 147 and his coaching stint on “The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil.” Instead, Silva went off on the current top contender.

“He fights with his mouth. He’s not a top guy. He creates that style and looks for guys to give attention to him. But face to face, he’s like a kid. He’ll cry like a baby, man. I don’t know what kind of man can say something bad about you then say, ‘Hey Wanderlei, let’s shake hands.’ F** you man. You talked some bad things. I’m old school. You’re talking some bulls*** about me, don’t shake my hand. This guy lost respect from me. Not one fighter respects him. I don’t like his style and I hope Anderson Silva kicks his ass. I think Anderson will be knock out Chael in the third round.”

Silva meets Franklin on June 23, 2012 in the main event of UFC 147 in a 190-lbs catchweight bout at the Estádio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

Also featured on the Podcast are UFC lightweight Sam Stout, former UFC and Strikeforce champion Frank Shamrock, and UFC VP of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner.
